Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics?

So GAF, what say you?

I have not played either of these games but have always wanted to. I've heard great things about both and they're both tactical.

I'm referring to the FE on GBA and FFT on PS1. Which do you recommend and why?

EDIT: Mention your favourite SRPGs too.

After trying both on a little TRPG spree, I'd say Fire Emblem is better purely for not having an isometric angle. That's just my personal preference though ;p

FFT. It's the better game overall.

It would be a harder choice if we were talking about Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn. Well, not that hard. In those cases I would go with FE.

Fire Emblem is my favorite, I'd play 7 for the GBA as it's a good starting point...Awakening makes things too easy for you and map variety isn't there so I wonder if it would be hard trying previous games if you start out with that one. Many people I know can't.

FFT is slightly better but loses out a bit in terms of accessibility. If you want to get the most out of that game you really need to put some time into it.

I dabbled a bit in Tactics, but not much. I just don't think it has the same style or flair as the Fire Emblem games. I feel Fire Emblem is generally better written too, with some really cool characters.

FE is just so much cooler:

Fire Emblem is a much easier game to get into, especially if you start with Fire Emblem 7 (just called Fire Emblem in the US) on the GBA as it has the perfect tutorial to ease you into it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the best games ever made, amazing Strategy RPG but it can be very difficult for first time players and the story is very dark and very complex. The Tactics Advance games are pale imitations that have worse to non existence stories and good but not as good gameplay.

FFT > Fire Emblem Series > FFT Advance games

Fire Emblem by far. Fire Emblem 4 (Geneology of the Holy War) and 5 have some really amazing gameplay, but the only way to have played those is by import. Tactics on PSX is still an amazing game and holds up very well today, but I could never enjoy the 2 GBATactics games.

There is also Fire Emblem 7, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, and Awakening which are all very amazing and well done Fire Emblem Games.

EDIT: My post is useless, we are only talking about FE7 and PSX Tactics. Hard choice between the 2 actaully.

Im going to say Fire Emblem.

Final Fantasy Tactics is still hell for me to play if after trying it more than once.
At least have heard good things of FFT Advanced but I never played that one.

The Super Famicom Fire Emblems and FE12 are both superior in terms of game mechanics but regardless even though they are SRPGs or "tactical" RPGs, they're very very different from each other in terms of battle mechanics.

In Fire Emblem there is a weapon and magic triangle that determine accuracy. Final Fantasy Tactics simplifies it and omits a distinct weapon/magic triangle in favor of raw power and accuracy.
Obviously there isn't immediate permadeath like in Fire Emblem and in Final Fantasy Tactics, you have much more flexibility between jobs and the magic system has much more range than your typical Fire Emblem game.

Both can be immensely broken through job exploits such as Arithmaticks and JP grinding compared to Fire Emblem's Jeigan clutch and linear job system.

Comparing the two series is like comparing Kingdom Hearts and the Tales series because they're both what you'd call action RPGs.

FFT is the better game.
If playing the PSP version (And i honestly recommend that, due to superior translation) don't forget to patch it - else, you'll ask yourself why are you watching endless animations.

They both share in broad strokes the narrative set in a medieval political drama and the turn based combat but the games are very different

As any Matsuno game, story and atmosphere come first. And he does a damn good job at that, you'll be engrossed throughout with the way the whole drama unfolds, because it really pushes the boundaries of usual video game stories. It'll stay with you.
Combat system, as any Matsuno game is gonna be a little more needlesslly complicated that I'd want, but not polish enough to go along with it. It's a great game but it does have issues.

Fire emblem story isn't as good nor does it want to. The snes games are better in this department though. However, in terms of gameplay, this series reigns supreme in the genre. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity, and you'll probably end up loving it.

What to play right now? I'd say if you want to make a long investment go fire emblem, if you want an even longer investment go FFT, but you can't go wrong with either

I'd go with Tactics although it stops there, the rest of the series is garbage. FE and SS are awesome, PoR/RD is better, Awakening is God. Shadow Dragon blows though.

FF Tactics has one good game, the first one. Every one since then is a massive disappointment.

So FFT1 > Fire Emblem, but outside of FFT1 FE >>>>>>>>>>>>> Tactics series.

I tried FFT first but couldn't get into it, after playing a few Fire Emblem games though I was able to go back and actually enjoy FFT.

This I pretty much agree with. The original Tactics is one of my favorite games ever, if only for the experimentation factor in making units with mixed abilities and such, and I think that FFT's main scenario is stronger. The Advance sequels have most of the gameplay still intact, but several changes were made for the worse and the main storylines are a lot weaker. A2 makes up for it with some strong side-missions, but I still wouldn't rate it too highly.

Really I think it depends more on what you're looking for in a SRPG. If you want to play with the character-building RPG element of it, I'd say go for FFT. If you want your focus on strategy and tactics and playing things out like a chess-match, Fire Emblem would be the better bet.

I may be a bit biased, but I personally prefer Fire Emblem. While the GBA games aren't my favorite of the series, they're still great games on their own right.

I love both series, but as any one FE (gba or else) vs FFT on ps1, it's gotta be FFT hands down. I like a lot of other sRPGs, but FFT gets a few things really right such as the number of units . Feel FE always turns into an effort of monotony at some point each game because you've got to advance 10 units. I also prefer FFT because I think units die too fast in FE.

But with that said, FE (series) and FFT are both excellent and you should play both.

Fire Emblem (specially if you play them all), has a deep story, has a lot of interesting characters and it's very difficult. I would recommend it. Play Fire Emblem if you want something more profound.

However.

Final Fantasy Tactics is more commercial, it's tied to a famous series, and has the always awesome job system, which you might like more.

FFT (PS1) is better than either FE game on GBA... but the FFT games on GBA are inferior to every FE and especially to FFT (PS1).

As such if the choice is strictly what OP lists, then FFT is the way to go. If it's any other FE games, or comparing the FFT to the FE series, FE wins easily. One great game doesn't make up for a series of consistently good to great games.

Final Fantasy Tactics on PSP. By far.

Only play FFT on PSP if you have a hacked PSP so you can install the patch to fix the brokenly stretched graphics and terrible in game slow downs during any spell or summon cast. If you aren't playing on homebrew enabled PSP or Vita, buy the PS1 version instead... even if the translation isn't as tight, it's better than the garbage the default PSP version is.

So my buddy is telling me Tactics Ogre on PSP is pretty much the best thing out of all of these.

What do you guys think? Didn't really know anything about the game.

Fire Emblem is more like Shining Force (I know FE came first)

FFT is more like Tactics Ogre.

Aside from both being SRPGs, they share little similarities.

Tactics orge is a bit more complicated in its mechanics compared to the other 2 games and the battles last awhile, but it's a very very good game.

neither.

Get Tactics Ogre : Let Us Cling Together PSP, it's better than those two. FFT is a poor man's Tactics Ogre.

I don't know if I could go back to the GBA Fire Emblems after Awakening to be honest. They were magnificent for their time, but I'm not sure how they've aged.

I think Tactics is much tighter when it comes to actual strategic elements. Fire Emblem has great character growth systems but the actual game is pretty much a joke, and the off screen spawning of enemies in stuff like Awakening is an embarrassment.
