Fire Pro Wrestling on XBLA in 2011 with ...avatars

I saw this pre-edit! *laughs* Yes, a number of them, and I still own Six-man Scramble, D, and Returns.

It's not what people like you or I want from a new FirePro game; that's that, and we can either cry over it or accept it. So, looking at what it is (and what it isn't), there's still no reason it can't be a great-playing wrestling game, just like every other FirePro title out there.

What I was trying to say in my reply (though it wasn't perfectly clear) is that I don't take the visual look of this game to be a representation of the effort being put into the game. Yes, it shows the direction - that it'll be a more casual game made for a wider audience - but that in no way means it won't be a well-build game.

Haha, I decided not to curse towards you, because your avatar confuses me deeply, and I respect you from the Gamefan days.

Fire Pro Wrestling is coming. Not me this time.. director isn't Suda? Uses Avatar.

Edit: Confirmed, the janitor must be behind this!

even if its more like a no mercy to def jam casualizing like aki did to their wrestling engine, it will still be more awesome than any recent wrasslin game.

I'm kind of excited for this, and the last wrasslin game I played was Rumble Roses...I'm wondering why didn't they show off the new avatars in the screens though.

Saw the headline and my heart smiled. then saw the screenshots and my heart sank. a fire pro game with all the japanese fight leagues makes sense and 2-D. this will be some dumbed down arcade nonsense. my search for a good wrestling game since koc 2 and fire pro on ps2 continues.

Being a fan that started with 6ManScram, this is not quite what I was expecting :lol, though if it plays true to FPW, I'm still there, goofy Avatar characters 'n all. I better be able to make a new bear wrestler and Tigermask-clone that crits like a mofo, though. First move crits with those characters, especially when the AI controlled them, in multiplayer was just a riot...like a Russian Roulette element to matches.

Wow, this is um...an unexpected turn for Fire Pro? :lol

Interested, but too early to call this one. If they give me online play and a decent engine, I am sold.

This is worst than Devil May Cry

THIS IS NOT FIRE PRO

Looks like they use Avatars as a base, but the pretend buff-shirt makes it look like the game has a lot of game-specific customization, so you can probably still make fake-real dudes like past games.

I was just thinking about this again, and something struck me as interesting. If they really wanted to go for the mass crowd and forsake the hardcore, I would imagine they wouldn't use the name Fire Pro Wrestling. No cred attached to that name except for the small vocal fanbase.

Maybe we'll see a casual mode with more forgiving dynamics, and a hardcore mode that is basically the old engine?

The press release sounds like that Fire Pro gameplay still is there. It´s just the look that is a bit.. weird. Need to see real gameplay.

O God. WTF is up with Japanese devs these days. They sure know how to piss off their fans.

This looks generic and fucking awful. Its all avatar stuff? no fictional Japanese wrestling/MMA leagues? God damn. So much potential for a real Fire Pro game on XBLA. This announcement just gave me fucking blue balls.

I am completely on board with this as long as they have full customization options that I expect for a Firepro game and a wrestling title for this gen (custom theme music). I expect that it can also import any created avatars on my memory unit without having to have that profile logged in. I assume that clothing options are available in game like Lazy Raiders that gives your avatar a safari outfit. Let's hope it ends well.

I really think this could. It at least has the potential to. Bare minimum, if the engine is decent, we get online Fire Pro. That's a first, and to me that's huge, especially if Spike does it right and implements things like 6 man battle royales online.

I'm really curious to see what the avatar restrictions will do to this though...blood is obviously out, are they going to allow criticals? Getting kicked in the head/suplexed/powerbombed so hard that you aren't getting the f back up isn't exactly family-friendly, but even this could be toned down (make the avatar look dizzy + add stars over their head instead of just lying there in a broken heap.)

What is the age restriction for Avatar use? It would reall suck if they have to neuter the experience too much.

lol @ anyone who believes this will actually be like the classic firepro wrestling. This will be a joke game where everything is as simple as can be. Avatars wtf. 3D WTF!!

That's what I'm thinking. Honestly this just seems like they slapped the Fire Pro name on a family-friendly wrestling game.

Yeah people can call me a sceptic but seriously this is not gonna be a serious simulation. It is gonna be some wacky arcade shit!

Spike should have not agreed to call this fire pro-wrestling as all they are gonna end up doing is pissing off all there fans.

I am gonna say Spike have a chance to redeem themselves and that is by announcing a real fire pro or KOC game on 3DS. :)

http://creators.xna.com/en-US/article/avataruse

Specifically relevant section:

Violence which causes blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation

Cartoon violence is allowed. Violence is allowed as long as there is no blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation. An example of allowable injuries includes injuries that might befall an avatar in a sporting event such as American football. Avatars can die temporarily to depict failure.

Based on this, it seems blood is out, but criticals would be okay.

Edit: Reading this, I suddenly pictured an avatar getting his head clotheslined off, completely bloodless, just kind of this *pop* and generic shocked avatar face as his head goes flying. :lol Move-specific critical animations would be pretty cool, even if they weren't so dementedly violent.

Also to be fair, they may be tacking on the old school 2D Fire Pro experience along with the Avatar version. Regardless, because its from them, I will trust their vision and give them a pass until the second I hit Start on my controller.

Then, SpikeÂ’s gotta bring the goods. PLEASE, PLEASE ensure that I will never buy another WWE game again. Fuck Sports Entertainment, I NEED Pro Wrestling.

Then why put it out under the "FirePro" label? There's no reason to if it's just some half-assed casual wrestling game.

Call me crazy, but I'm actually going to wait until I play the game before I count it out.

I don't get why, if they are going for the casual crowd, they are using the Fire Pro label. Fire Pro is not a known quantity to people who have never played it before. Honestly, they could just call it Avatar Wrestling or Avatar Smackdown and probably sell more to casuals then using the Fire Pro name.

who knows? If we are gonna get the real firepro experience then why not go down the same road they have gone down before.

As soon as avatars are involved I think being sceptical is automatic.

Maybe they want to sell more than 100 copies? Maybe they wanted to try their hand at a wrestling game that would be friendlier to get into? (Traditional FirePro is horribly intimidating, even for people who might like wrestling games.) Maybe this is coming out in collaboration with another developer/publisher (Microsoft?), and they wanted a game that would be a quality wrestling title but have a broader appeal?

Plenty of reason why the project may have ended up like this.

Oh I have no doubt they want to sell more copies. i.e. Avatars and a dumbed down experience.

why isn't anyone doing a release like this with the AKI engine?!?! Whoever has the rights to that is sitting on a fucking gold mine.

AKI still has it. They just changed their name to syn Sophia.

Fire Pro Wrestling is returning, but this time it's coming to Xbox Live Arcade and it's way cuter. But does that mean the buff Fire Pro-Wrestling of days gone by have been passed over in favor of Xbox 360 Avatars?

"Our plan is that it is just Avatars," Microsoft Game Studios Vice President Phil Spencer tells Kotaku. "I guess there is the possibility for us to do celebrity Avatars if we wanted to."

The Fire Pro Wrestling series began under developer Human Entertainment in the late 1980s. Tokyo-based developer Spike picked up the baton and took the reigns of the series starting in 2000.

Fire Pro Wrestling features a timing-based grappling mechanic. While the beefy fighters appear to have changed for something, well, cuter, the deep gameplay looks like it is going to stay.

"This specifically was an idea Spike had around Avatar wrestling," Spencer continues. "But Fire Pro obviously has a mechanic and a depth, that people appreciate. And that's why we wanted to stay with the brand. So people could understand what our aspiration was. So that we could stay true to that franchise."

Spencer was quick to point out that Fire Pro Wrestling was a temporary title. "We don't know the final name, just to be completely honest."

I played the Firepro on PS2. Liked the fighting system a lot, but the menus and interface FUCKING SUCKED. Also, the single-player didn't have much to it beyond the insane customization.

If they fix that shit, I'm in.

Probably "fixed it" by removing it all.

The strange thing about the "why use the name Fire Pro if it's changing so much" questions is that the usual response when something like this happens, "because the name moves units," doesn't really even apply. It's not exactly a household name. I only know about it from back in the day because I was a big wrestling game fan; nobody else I knew IRL had even heard of it. I didn't even know they still made Fire Pro games.

What do you want from the single player that was missing?

And it may just be lip service, but I feel better thanks to that "But Fire Pro obviously has a mechanic and a depth, that people appreciate. And that's why we wanted to stay with the brand" comment. I'd still like the ability to create avatars in the game beyond just my own, but that isn't a must have.

GRR... really wish somebody who actually knows something about FirePro would ask this guy some questions.
