First console you payed for your own money?

Dreamcast in January 2000. I didnt own a PS1. I went from SNES (Mom paid) to university PC (I paid) until getting back into console gaming in 2000 with the DC.

it was awesome.

PS1 with FF7, the unofficial strategy guide, and one of those multi-memory cards in one. Oddly enough I still remember it very clearly and where I bought it. The clerk at EB Games had to call and confirm my check would clear :)

The only system that I haven't paid for, was my first 360. It was a gift from my girlfriend (now wife).

Gameboy I bought from a friend. Later, I traded that and some games for a Genesis. Then bought an N64, PSOne, Xbox, PS2, NES, a DS and more 360s. All this over more than 20 years.

Ooh this takes me back. Let's see...
Game Boy - Dad bought this for me with Killer Instinct.
N64 - My big brother bought this with Super Mario 64 and some accessories. I clearly remember my mum and big brother coming back from shopping one day and then from nowhere they pulled out a huge Dixon's (which UK guys here remember that store) bag with it inside. I think I was between 6-7 years old. Lost my shit.
Game Boy Color - Again my dad
Game Boy Advance - I initially was going to buy this day one. Had it pre-ordered and everything. Then my bro told me to cancel it as we'll buy it cheaper after the summer. I walk home one day on the launch day of GBA feeling bummed... And there he is with it... With Castlevania COTM. Best.
PS2 - My bro bought it used off a friend with a bunch of games.
GameCube - Me and my bro went halves on this. Felt like I should somehow contribute. Got it with Mario Sunshine and Eternal Darkness. Saved my pocket money for many months.
DS - my mum actually got it for me. Had to do so much convincing!
Wii - this is when I started using money I earned through pocket money, odd jobs and using some of my EMA (who here also used to get this in the UK?) money to get this day one.
Xbox 360 - again me
PS3 - again me... I remember scheduling it all out so the money I saved would be enough until when MGS4 came out.

From here on out I have to get everything my self... Old enough now Lol.

Sorry for the long post... I nostalgia'd...

Playstation 1. I bought it in 1996 or 1997 i would guess. Before that i only had NES, but that was a christmas gift to the family, not something that i bought.

N64, which was shortly taken away from me after my mother found out I bought it without her approval. The console spent the next 9 months at my grandparents house in a closet until christmas. I remember buying it at Wal-Mart while my mom was getting grocery's then running it out to the car to hide it. Used my Christmas/birthday money to buy it.

Dreamcast on 9/9/99 with all of the following:

3 Controllers
3rd party light gun because sega cancelled the first party one right before launch
2 VMU

Sonic Adventure
Blue Stinger
The House of the Dead 2
Hydro Thunder
NFL 2K
NFL Blitz 2000
Pen Pen TriIcelon
Power Stone
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Soulcalibur
TNN Motorsports Hardcore Heat

The guy at my local babbages loved me. He would call me out by name when I went in the store and be amazed at how big my preorder was.

My friend and I went to the mall before school that morning to pick up all of our stuff and had my mom drive it home for us while we waited forever for the day to end. I rented one with SA from Hollywood Video before launch though so I was already hooked. You couldn't rent a VMU though so I had to leave the thing on all the time if I wanted to play more then Sonic's part.

N64, though Gameboy Pocket was technically the first (bought christmas day with return money), I feel I actually saved real money from my allowance for the N64. Back in 1996 (I was 11) I got $10 a week allowance + car washes and chores, took several months but I got there.

Dreamcast in January 2000. I didnt own a PS1. I went from SNES (Mom paid) to university PC (I paid) until getting back into console gaming in 2000 with the DC.

Ahh I think Dremacast was mine too actually.

Although I paid for it by trading in all my N64 stuff that my parents had bought for me :p

The first console I bought when I started working was the Wii. This was around its release time too. Since a pain in the ass it was to find. Lol. Everything prior to that were funded by my parents even though they hated my hobby of playing games. Lol

PS4 just might be it.

Dreamcast I bought with trade-ins. And PS3 I bought with my stimulus money (Thanks Pres Bush!) PS4 will be the first console I purchased with my own cash.

My NES and Mega Drive were paid for by my parents, my SNES I paid for myself in part by saving up my allowance.

The first console I fully financed myself was the N64 but the one I was most proud of was the Dreamcast (also because owning it made me feel like a hip rebel as pretty much only the hardest of the hardcore bought one in my area). I also bought a Gamecube, Wii, PS3, Wii U and several handhelds myself after that (though I did get a PSX and PS2 as gifts, but far later into their lifespan).

Yeah, I have been quite spoiled when it comes to game consoles and games, though my parents never really did go on holidays so I missed out on that (as I did on having a brother or sister to fight over the controller with as well).

OG Xbox with Morrowind and Halo. It was money well spent awsome gaming time for me.

I started out an Xbox guy when most were in the Playstation camp. I'm going PS4 this generation but deep down I wish the roles were reversed and Xbox One was the cheaper, sexyier, more powerful machine.

Atari Lynx for me. Was the launch model & came bundled with California Games as well as a power supply and link cable. I bought Blue Lightning and Gauntlet III on the day too.

Gopher trapping? How many gophers did you have to catch to buy that?

For me it was a Sega Master System in 1987.

Well..mid 70's in rural Canada...I think it might have been .25 a piece? Could have been .10 though...Bought my first skateboard that way too :)

NES

My aunt bought me some expensive clothes, which have never been my thing. I asked her if I could return them. I did and had to beg my mom to let me buy the NES over the phone as I stood in Toys R Us, I remember it like it was yesterday.

It was such a big deal for a small town 12 year old kid to buy his first video game system, such memories! :)

My mother got me everything until i was 14 last console she got me was Genesis, my first console was Saturn...Then N64 followed by Playstation, Next gen was Dreamcast, PS2, GC and Xbox all on launch day, then i moved to PC gaming in 2004 and i haven't purchased a console since...
