First Full Auto Review?

For those who want to see the difference themselves, the demo is exactly the same. I just tried changing to 480p 4:3 and suddenly the demo is 60fps most of the time (though it still drops to like 5-10fps when a lot of stuff is exploding).

It's actually playable on 480p 4:3, as compared to unplayable on 1080i/720p 16:9

More reivews claiming the framerate is fine. At least this game will show who is reviewing on HD sets and who isnt.

With the high rate of fire and fast moving cars and destruction you would think that the game would have some serious frame rate issues, but I am happy to report that the game displays very few shortcomings during single player gameplay. And again, it only happens when the entire screen is filled with stuff going on.

The frame-rate does occasionally hitch up for brief periods at a time, although not as much as you might think, given the sheer number of opponents and destruction being portrayed on screen during a typical race.

Yup 480p 4:3 is definitely much smoother and playable than anything widescreen. There is no doubt in my mind that the reviewers who have not too many bad things to say about the framerate did not try the game in any widescreen mode.

From that 'Next Level Gaming' review:

It's a joy to play racing games in true High Definition (720p/1080i, Mike uses 720p and I use 1080i) at a near 60fps frame rate. Ridge Racer does it beautifully, but Project Gotham 3 (as much as we love that game), and Need For Speed Underground are 30fps or less. Full Auto won't always stay at the 60 mark, but it won't dip that far either. And when you see the unadulterated amount of "stuff" happening on the screen, it's doesn't even become an issue. Although we do have to point out because it's our jobs that when the entire screen if full of twisted metal carnage and special effects going off everywhere, the game got a little choppy. But it lasted less than a second or two and was never the norm.

They definitely played it in HD.

I just wanted to add that at the price tag of 100 dollars, the VGA cable is not the easiest option in the world.. especially when you're limited to 20 inch screens max.

Well, considering less than 20% of TV owners have HDTVs I guess it makes sense that less than 20% of game reviewers are reviewing them on HDTVs. You'd think if you were going to review HD games you'd make sure you are doing them on HDTVs (or computer monitors with VGA cable) but I guess most people don't care enough.

I got the official VGA 360 Cables by Microsoft for 40$ CANADIAN. which is 35$usd. wheres it 100?

It doesn't matter. If you're making a living writing reviews, the company that's paying you should pay for that cable so you can do the reviews properly or if you are a freelancer you should spend the money so you can properly do reviews. $100 is a small amount in terms of a generation of gaming reviews.

That was at Best Buy a couple of months back. I about swallowed my own tongue when I saw that. And also around launch time on MS's website.

*oops, sorry guys I was thinking about the wireless adapter. My bad.

So it's really only 40 bones?

Well I certainly disagree when they say it's not an issue. At times it can be difficult to control the car correctly because the framerate is way too low, and I'm not speaking about the times where everything explodes around the screen.
Ho well, I must have bionic eyes or something.

It's a retail game, so I don't see how I could have a bad copy. And some other sites I respect had the exact same complaint, like Gamekult in France who gave it a 4/10.
Btw you can see for yourself the slowdowns in my 10 minutes video of the game. If it doesn't bother you then I guess you'll be ok with the game.

Maybe Sega hates all of Europe?

honestly, i had very little problems with the full auto demo as far as framerate and gameplay goes. yeah, its totally assy and usually not 60fps, but it definitely never impacted gameplay for me.

... They gave the game 95%! NINETYFIVEPERCENT! I somehow think they're not being entirely honest with their review given not only the running averages from other sites, but also the obvious disparity in their framerate claims. Your eyes are fine or SEGA hates Europe.

I just tried the demo 480i 4:3 and the game was pretty decent. I was able to take out a lot of cars and win the race. Then I tried on 1080i and I couldn't make any turns properly, I could aim because the cars were jumping around, and I couldn't hit ramps as I wanted because my car wouldn't control properly at 15fps. I don't know how it "never impacted gameplay" when you played, because I sure as hell got last place or 2nd to last each time I played on 1080i.

Yeah I guess that's it. Honestly, if gamekult did not have the same issues as me with the framerate I'd be starting to think that maybe my Xbox 360 is faulty. It's just (IMHO) *that* bad.
Edit: Bebpo to the rescue, thanks for feeling exactly like me about the game, even if it's only the demo.

Yeah, the demo ran like crap for me in 720p and 1080i... extremely janky framerate...

Something is wrong here with these high scores...

now you got me really curious.

tell you what, tonight i'll fire up the demo again, but this time i'll set it and my tv to 480. maybe its just cause i have no reference point? its not like the game has rock solid control mechanics where it'd be easy to pick up sloppy controls due to framerate :P

also, i probably only ran through it 2 or 3 times. i'm sure i got first a couple times though

I hope this is not a trend, and rather an unpolished game.

Or reviews will have to start reviewing the game played in each resolution.

After seeing this thread I fired up the OXM demo, set my 360 to 480P and played the demo. Seemed a little smoother than I remembered it at 1080I. Switched it back to 1080I and played the demo again. I just didn't see that much of a difference. Finished 2nd place 2 out of the 3 times I played at 1080I.

It's good that this thread was made, but NFS:MW has the exact same problem and I recall no one on the forum making a peep.

I had to play through the whole game in 480p because at 720p or 1080i the tearing and framerate were absolutely abysmal. In HD the game constantly tried to reach 60fps and failed literally every 5 seconds or so. Thats in addition to near-constant tearing all over the place. When I changed it to 480p, it helped the performance of the game quite a bit. I was pissed needless to say but ended up enjoying the game.

I will say this, at least Full Auto doesn't have massive amounts of tearing like a bunch of other 360 games. I haven't played the full version yet, though. But I remember Cord from Pseudo on g4tv claiming the game will definitely be 60fps...

480P widescreen or 480P 4:3?
