First GTA IV Advert (Euro/UK)

The circulars for 4-20 through 4-26 are out now. 4-27 through 5-3 will be on around the weekend. We will know if there is a price cut then.

Yea, that makes much more sense. I wonder if MS will ride it though. This rumor has been out their for a long time.

But lets pretend I don't want to use lock-on at all. How good is free aiming? What are the nuances?

Other than my preference of the 360 controller over the ps3 controller for any sort of free aiming, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I just like the feel and positioning of the 360 controller's analog sticks when it concerns free aiming, but the aiming in the game is totally fine. Didn't feel anything was wrong with it.

A preview mentioned some problems with the free camera. Mainly, it being too slow when rotating and being easier to just turn the character to look down an alley you're running passed instead. For example, in most 3rd person games, you can rotate freely and look to your left/right/behind while running in a different direction.

Any issues with that in your build?

If there's a price drop it would be the week of 4-27, that is GTA week.
Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. I'm still surprised about no insider info yet. There are so many people involved in retail that it's almost hard to keep secret unless you announced it first and then inform retailers.

Slightly edited my avatar in reverence of this amazing, groundbreaking, best-ever commercial.

still 25 mill for 10 hours of DLC seems a bit much...its not like they are building a new engine.

But how does MS lose by doing this? They LOAN 50M and in exchange for getting their money back regardless, they get exclusive DLC. Which part of that is a bad deal for MS?

I'm hearing from friends that actually watch a fair bit of TV that this advert is on virtually every episode break at the moment (on the terrestrial channels).

I didn't want to create a new thread, and I didn't want to put 'sales talk' in the official thread, but MCV has a report here on UK retail opinion on GTAIV, and relative platform performance. People sensitive to platform comparison etc. may want to look away now!

It seems polling retailers on the platform split is fashionable these days, but this report has more than I've seen elsewhere.

HMV
“Demand for both formats is high, but our 1,000 Xbox points offer generated a huge amount of interest.”

Asda
“Both titles have generated great interest on the Asda website, with strong pre-orders, and the PS3 version is selling three times that of 360, which is surprising and not in line with what we’d expect,” said Asda’s head of games Duncan Cross.

Comet
“We have great expectations and believe it is going to be a massive hardware driver – especially on PS3.”

GAME
“GTA IV will really assist PS3 hardware sales, as the console has been waiting for a good supply of killer apps. “Having said that, the 360 version of GTA IV will probably sell more considering its greater installed user base – but by the end of the year the PS3 will outsell the 360, regardless of what happens with GTA IV.”

I saw another report quoting a buyer at GameCrazy in the US, saying that interest was split a lot more evenly as with more recent releases like DMC4. Play.com preorder charts usually have the two platforms switching positions too. Ditto with Amazon.co.uk.

Of course, these aren't ultimate indicators, but they're probably the best we can do for now.

Will be interesting to see if any of that changes when this TV marketing campaign hits. Asda's figures are surprising though.

Indeed, this is all 'pre-marketing' really. As such it's probably indicative of 'early adopter' interest among existing console owners.

Interest among new buyers could well be different. It'll be interesting to watch.

MS stated just yesterday their pre-orders are outpacing the PS3 version by 2 to 1 in the US and in EMEA territories. I have no doubt US April/May NPD will reflect these numbers very closely if not better.

Greenberg said Microsoft is forecasting Xbox 360's installed base in the US to be two- to three-times that of the PS3 by the end of 2008.

In addition, he said in the US and in EMEA territories, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has had more pre-orders than the PS3 version by a 2:1 margin. That game launches on April 29.

By virtue of the userbase sizes, I would expect that (i.e. a 66:33 split). But what retail feedback we do has been muddying the picture somewhat.

If what UK retail has been saying is true, and is representative (of europe, for example), and if what MS is saying is also true, then it might suggest a very disproportionate level of interest in the 360 version in the US.

That's lots of ifs, though.

I agree, though, that MS's claim is more what you'd expect. Claims of PS3 interest matching or exceeding do seem rather more unbelievable.

Psychotext is banned? :(
anyway looks like the microsoft 2:1 figure is combing europe as well the united states. i cant really see preorders being 2:1 fro 360 in europe.

I expect that is the case yes. A few UK reports gofreak has posted say the PS3 version is selling better in the UK.

Wonder why he got banned.. who will update the dead 360 thread?

I wouldn't put to much store in what Comet and Asda say they are hardly known as gaming stores ones a grocer and one Electrical store that mainly sells TV's and Washing machines. The vast majority of pre orders in the Uk will be Game, gamestation, HMV, amazon, play and gameplay.

He made a ban bet, that PS3 Jan-March sales in US would be lower than 360's. And the ban seems pretty long too :/ 3 months. These bets are really stupid.
