First Metal Gear Solid 4 Review coming next Friday

I don't think that MGS4 has the potential to repeat GTAIV success. I don't think that this gens scores have suffered from inflation, only bioshock before GTAIV had come close
, and the orange box is a game that achieved its scores out of value. I think both Bioshock and GTAIV deserve their place.

I've elaborated about as much as you did
I think MGS4 has more-or-less made an equivelant leap from last gen to next gen as GTAIV, which is a considerably large one

I think after last year where so many sources were giving 9.5 and the occasional 10 for everything from Halo 3 and CoD4 to Mario Galaxy and Bioshock that when a game like GTAIV that was inevitably better came along and had a far larger scope and value, they felt they had to have scores even higher than last year.

For example; sure CoD4 is great, but with such a short single player and a great multiplayer is it that much different than what CoD offered for 2003? I don't think so. I think rather than rating based on standards, reviewers have just been rating higher and higher for the past year.

Reviewers have been handing out higher than deserved scores for the past year. GTAIV deserves higher scores than most of them but I think it should have similar scores as GTA did last gen. Even around 95% GTA3 - SA still had a 4-5% gap over the regular games pulling in around 90%, GTA's were all still considerably ahead of the rest in scores last gen. Now with so many resting around 94%, I think that 5% gap is still there, just higher up on the scale

If they're going to announce European details on the blog they'll likely hold it back till tomorrow.

Instead of wasting time* with a Europe update they need to tell me when where and how much for the gunmetal bundle of love.

*Please don't kill me. I don't care how much of the content is Europe-centric as long as they update.

Yeah, it's going to get a 10 from them, but it'll get shat on for dumb reasons by everyone else because it's cool to hate on Japanese made games these days.

eh, i really doubt the game will get 10s across the board. mgs games are brilliant, but far from perfect.

mgs4 will probably be no exception (though the touched up controls have me optimistic)

Well GTA4 is far from perfect and it had no problem pulling down 10s.

Reviews are supposed to tell us how good a game is. I definitely don't think MGS4 should get a 10, unless it really deserves it. After playing GTA IV (and loving it) I must say that it does not deserve a 10 in any shape or form.
Right, I think I took your comment a bit out of context, I thought you meant MGS4 does not deserve 10s, but after reading your post carefully *again* I kinda agree :\

I'm just sayin that people who keep saying that MGS4 ABSOLUTELY does NOT deserve 10s need to play the game first then pass judgements. We have no idea how different the game is.

*Laughing my effing ass off* Umm so how did you come to that conclusion?? Have you played MGS4?? NO! So stfu!

Have you played it? No. So how can you tell me it deserves a 10?

A ten can be taken as either perfection, or just being so far ahead of the competition that it puts the game on a pedestal. I'm not going to crown MGS4 until it comes out.

As I said on the last page, we've seen titans like GTA IV, SSBB and Halo 3 get great reviews and huge hype, but when the games reach the hands of the consumer a variety of flaws come to light and mar their legacies. So, I'm staying cautious.

yeah but GTA is purported as the holy proidigal child of western gaming so i think reviewers felt the need to conform to that. as high as gaming journalists regard kojima and the mgs series, reviewers - if they want to - are going to take mgs4 down a notch since they can get away with it.

God. You guys are so worried about the review score. Let it go.
No matter how good MGS4 is it won't score better than GTA4.
MGS4 could very likely be the best adventure game ever but it's debatable if it should score higher even if that's a fact. GTA4 is totally brilliant and revolutionary in some respect. You have Euphoria which is a glimpse into the future. Pushing the narrative forward via a mobile phone is the secret sauce sandbox games have been looking for all this time. There's so much unique content in GTA4 and before you start arguing quality/quantity, the quality of the content is sky-high. How they have made all that content seamless and integrated into every aspect is absolutely mind blowing. It has arguably the most realized game protagonist ever even when going against Snake. etc...etc

The biggest aspect to MGS4 will likely be:
- It ups the benchmark of production values a single game can have
- The story is going to be very emotional
- With the refined controls it's going to be the best playing MGS
- Online makes it a lasting MGS
- It's likely to feel totally unique, there's a bigger step from MGS3 to 4 than from 1 to 2 gameplay wise

MGS4 is almost guaranteed to become the benchmark for tightly paced adventure games going forward, considering what's announced it could very well hold onto that title for years and years. It's going to be a brilliant 'end' to a franchise. Just saying that it most likely won't be considered revolutionary but obviously evolutionary.

You're looking at GTAIV in full understanding of how those pieces of the puzzle fit together, and how much content there is. You can't really compare that to MGS4 yet considering how much you don't know

No more arguments. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the Game of the Forever and you all know it :P Who cares about review scores.

I like how we're about to start getting reviews and you still can't preorder the goddamn PS3 bundle anywhere. Seriously, what's the holdup here?

Most places probably won't take preorders on it. You can expect to walk in and get them on June 12... hopefully.

It's actually pretty amazing that there can even be an argument about whether or not MGS4 deserves a 10 when it isn't even released yet.

Except I have to work that day, and the rumor is that even just the regular bundle (not talking about the gunmetal one) is going to be hard to find. I asked one of my friends who still manages a GS out in California, and he said that he heard from his boss that he had heard the reason they weren't doing preorders yet was that initial word from corporate is that allocations were going to be extremely small. We both shrugged that off at the time (a few weeks ago), but since then there was the Quarterman rumor to that effect, and I've heard that from some more people as well since. If I cannot get a bundle I will NOT be buying a PS3; I refuse to get a 40 gig, especially since as far as I know at that point they'll still have the sixaxis in them.

My Sony rep told me it would be readily available, so who knows? What was the Quaterman rumor?

MGS4 could get a 1/10 from reviewers for all I care. I'm buying it day one. I'm taking off from work that week. This is my most anticipated game EVER. The last time I felt this hyped was after playing the RE4 demo on Gamecube. But I'm even more hyped because MGS has always been an awesome series.

Hell, I've been thinking of doing the whole growing out a mustache thing and get myself an eyepatch and green bandanna.

Is anyone honestly waiting to see reviews before they buy it. I assumed anyone who picks this up had decided on the purchase long ago. For AFW or worse, I MUST own this game.

Pics or it didnt happen >.>

MGO was an interested distraction, but the snippets of playing as Snake and testing him out in that area straight from MGS4 of what could be....good lord, the wait is getting painful!!

I'm more interested in the actual text of the review then the score itself. Dont care if they give it a 7/8/9/10. Just wanna read from someone who beat the game and can hopefully explain the experience with the least amount of spoilers possible.

MGS4 is niche?

I leave this thread sadder than I entered.
I wouldn't take offense at that. All things considered, the mainstream generally prefers formulaic games. Only a bland dish appeals equally to all tastes.

There are plenty of those out already. No scores, but impressions from those who've beaten it

And on this occasion, in a heroic effort to draw a line for once and all under Snake's story and give the Metal Gear Solid series the grand finale it deserves, Hideo Kojima and his team really have outdone themselves. 'Extravagant' doesn't cover it. Nor do 'dramatic', 'spectacular', 'sentimental', 'surprising', 'long-winded', 'final', 'painstaking' or 'polished'. Guns of the Patriots is Metal Gear Solid in excelsis."

IGN, Eurogamer, Gamespy, 1up, Gamepro all have previews from people who've completed it. Suffice to say, they all seem more than impressed

More looking forward to a review style of impressions. Previews are always positive and for big games previews always build the game up to seem like the best thing ever.

I'm not offended and I hate sales-age bull, but I'm wondering how a series that sells millions of copies worldwide could be defined as niche. I mean, niche is what I would call the titles Atlus releases.

Whatever, lol.
