The Pokemon League thread kind of died (I guess because it was before most North Americans got the game). So after much discussion about it in the Official Pokemon thread, we've decided to start up a tournament again!

Tournament Format
Singles
6 Pokemon per team
LV100 (WiFi automatically sets you to LV100)
Best of 1
Double Elimination

This means that you will have a minimum of two fights in this tournament. If you lose twice, you are eliminated.

Date and Time
The tournament will begin on June 18th, 2007. I will put up the backet on June 17th once I get home from work (expect around 7:00 PM PDT). You will have 2 - 3 days to finish each battle depending on the amount of entrants. More entrants means less time allocated as we don't want the tourney dragging on forever.

Rules
Sleep Clause
You may only put one of your opponent's Pokemon to sleep at a time. If one Pokemon is sleeping, you may not put another to sleep. Pokemon using the move Rest or asleep due to abilities such as Effect Spore do not count towards this limit. (So if something is Resting, you can still put something else to sleep).

Species Clause
Every Pokemon on your team must be of a different species. So no 6 Charmanders or what have you (as awesome as six Charmanders may be).

Banned Moves
Double Team
Minimize
Guillotine
Horn Drill
Fissure
Sheer Cold

Banned Pokemon
Mewtwo
Mew
Wobbuffet
Lugia
Ho-Oh
Wynaut
Latias
Latios
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Deoxys (ALL forms)
Dialga
Palkia
Giratina
Darkrai
Arceus

Confidentiality
Do NOT post your opponent's team or strategy in this thread once you're done with the match. You can say gg or whatever else, but please do not reveal anything about their team or strategy. Pokemon has a LOT to do with prediction and you'd be doing them a disservice. Discussion of what happened is fine after the tournament is over or the person in question is eliminted, but only if they are okay with it.

Errors
- If your press Run, by accident or on purpose, you forfeit the match.
- If there is a communication error, the one who had the upper hand at the time of the error wins the match. If someone has a second communication error, we will assume the problem is likely with them and they will have to forfeit the second match that they have an error in.

Please GAF. We are going by the honour system here. I think everyone here is mature enough to make that work.

Voice Chat
Keep Voice Chat OFF during your battles. This helps with the disconnection problems some people have and also keeps people from listening in on the other side to see if the opponent is switching or not (those buttons are loud).

Prizes
There will be a prize pool. First place gets to pick a prize first, Second place gets to pick second, Third place gets to pick third. I don't think we'll have more prizes than that. Please note that prizes will most likely be clones from Emerald Version or something like that. If you do not like clones and are the winner, please say so and I will try and get something for you.

So far, prize pool includes:
- Manaphy Egg [ Firestorm ]
- Either a well bred Misdreavus, Skarmory, or Vulpix (More Details) [ Jiggy37 ]
- Delibird holding Lucky Egg [ Crazymoogle ]

Donations are appreciated.

All Participants will receive at least one Pokemon of their choice from a list. (More Details) [ A Link to the Snitch ]

Friend Codes
If you are entering the tournament, submit your friend code information into this database by demi (I think it was him) so we don't need to clutter this post up with 12 digit codes.

There will probably be another tournament in August or September once Europeans and Australians have got the game and some time to work on their teams.

Why are Double Team and Minimize banned?

Count me in anyways.

Dammit I thought you gave in? >=O

DT and Minimize are banned for a number of reasons, the one I find most important for this tournament is TIME. I don't want to subject people to one hour battles. Even though I've had 40 minute battles without the thing, all they do is help it along.

Don't use this thread to bitch about rules. We already bitched about them before.

I'm not bitching, but I don't remember any discussion about banning those moves (you just said that Smogon was considering banning those).

Like I said, i'm still in. I just don't recall any discussion on those two moves.

Oh, I think we only discussed OHKO moves then. Well, these two are just as random as OHKO moves with the added annoyance of extending battles faaar beyond what they should.

I'm in of course.

I think in the interest of time, people should confirm their entries some time closer to the start date, like perhaps within 3 or 4 days of the start of the tournament? That way the brackets aren't held up by the 50 people who say they're entering today, but then forget about it and never actually play any matches. Maybe this isn't a good idea, I don't know. Anybody have any comments on it?

Also, perhaps a mention that potential entrants shouldn't be scared off because they're not total pokemon experts. A lot of people entering are similarly inexperienced (me) and it's just for fun. You will have fun even if you lose, don't be afraid to play!

Yeah usea, confirmation by posting in the last few days might be a good idea. I could put a star before the name of everyone who's confirmed or something. Then if everyone is done early except for those who didn't confirm, we could move on early. Or those who don't confirm would basically be disqualified if they aren't here by the time the round is over.

That goes without saying. Not everyone here is a Pokemon expert and it's all in good fun. The competitive players are likely going to win in the end, but it's the experience that matters!

wait, no skarmbliss ban? (unless there's a known counter in D/P I hadn't realized yet)

I don't see any reason to ban them... I don't think there has ever been a rule agains them being used together? Just a message by a bunch of people on NetBattle who didn't want to deal with it?

There is no SkarmBliss ban.

Add that voice chat should be off. Apparently this helps the connection or something, to help avoid those errors. I know at least two people have said it does, cvxfreak and... hmm, I forget the other person, but there was definitely someone in the other thread who needed voice chat off for all of his trades.

As for a prize, I don't exactly have legendaries to offer, but I can volunteer these if any of them sound interesting at all:

1) Misdreavus - Timid; male; 31 Sp. Attack/Sp. Defense/Speed; egg move of Destiny Bond; TM moves of Calm Mind and Will-O-Wisp
Whoever gets this could use him on his own or just use it to breed some other good stuff like Gengar, Drifblim, Gardevoir, Gallade, etc.--this Misdreavus will pass great stats and cool moves, so yeah.

2) Skarmory - Mild (I know); male; 31 Speed; egg moves of Drill Peck and Whirlwind; TM moves of Taunt and Roost
This one's only good for breeding a better Skarmory later. One or two of these four moves should be scrapped to make a viable moveset for an eventual Skarmory that you intend to use, but at least you have all the TM/egg moves at once.

3) Vulpix - Timid; male; 31 Defense/Sp. Defense/Speed; egg moves of Hypnosis, Energy Ball, and Disable
Note that Ninetales only gets EB through breeding; the EB TM doesn't work, for whatever reason. Also, I ran this one up to level 14 (to check the IVs) and it has 8 EVs in Speed, so I'm attaching a Tamato Berry. You can either erase the speed or keep it, whichever.

4) Totodile - Jolly; male; 31 Attack/Speed; egg moves of Ice Punch and Dragon Dance
Max speed Jolly Feraligatr can outperform neutral-nature base 90 speed Pokemon even before Dragon Dance if you want. Adamant might still be better, though, but the nature is what it is. >_>

Anyway. Added myself to demi's list. >_>

damn! I'll be working :(
When do you work? I'm not speaking for anybody else here, but I'm sure reasonable accomodations can be made. I think the way it will work (correct me if I'm wrong) is that matches are announced, and the two people meet online sometime that day or the next day when it's most convenient for them, then report back the results.

That is correct.

Skarmbliss is decent, but not unstoppable in the slightest. I actually just made a post of seven ways off the top of my head to stop it dead cold (and there are many more), but then realized that might provide some advantage against people who might be using those two Pokemon, so I held back. Let's just say that it can certainly be done, either with direct attacks or some nice creativity and thinking outside the box of pure power.

Since I don't play the metagame. What is Skarmbliss? I assume it's some Skarmory and Blissey combo, what is so good about it?

Point taken. I'm not entirely sure how easy it is to set up a counter to it without damaging your team, at least in comparison to countering other common strategies (like BP teams and curselaxes). Then again, I've been very behind on Pokemon's metagame for a while now. D/P has revived interest though, and heck, I may enter this tourney if I feel I'm prepared enough.

From my understanding, it's throwing an opponent off-balance by forcing a virtual guessing game of sorts. Kind of like using Wobbuffet. Blissey has good Sp Def and ridiculous HP, which means special sweepers don't stand a chance against it. Skarmory is a steel/flying type with very high defense (one of the highest in the game IIRC). This gives him resistance to all sorts of physical attacks, while effectively nullifying his ground weakness and neutralizing his fighting weakness. Thus, against physical attackers you bring out Skarmory, and against special attackers you bring out Blissey. Add in natural cure/heal bell to counter anybody who tries to use status effects against you, as well as Softboiled to constantly keep Blissey refreshed, and it becomes a major annoyance. It's not foolproof, and with the new physical/special attack system in D/P, it seems easier to counter (using a strong physical fire move for example), but you have to prepare for the possibility, and it's not as simple as getting a fast hazer/pseudo-hazer to neutralize BP teams and curselaxes, unless I missed something completely.

The seven examples I thought up only involved using one Pokemon each; and three of those only required one move (out of the 24 available to the team, of course), although one of those three also needed an item in conjunction with the move.
In any case, I assure you, the counters have all been found. :) And there are more of them than ever because of D/P additions, for that matter.

No no, I wasn't doubting you, I'm just ignorant, that's all :) I really have to catch up to the current metagame...

Well I WAS interested in entering, but that was before I realised there are people here who play the Metagame and thought I might stand a chance. ;_;

Maybe for the next tournament I'll be in a confident enough position to enter.

I'm in, however I'd really not like the date moved up whatsoever as I highly doubt I'll be able to make it, but if it turns out I'm the only one who can't meet the earlier date I'll drop out. I don't wanna hold anyone up. :P

Sovan you should just play for fun. I've never done any serious Pokemon play myself, but I"m looking forward to this tournament, it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun.

I'm in...although I hope I'll have time to participate with my work.

EDIT: Er....Please add Manaphy and Celebi to the banned pokemon list.

Count me in! These rules seem fine with me. What other kinds of prizes were we thinking about, 'cause I could possibly donate something.

Good call on getting this tournament started.

You can put me down as a maybe, hopefully this will spark my interest in the game again. I will confirm when the date is closer.

Being a Slowpoke uk'er, i'm a lil lttp, and only have a few pokemon over lvl 20, is it worth entering?

I just beat the Pokemon league with a cast of level fifties. I won't be ready for this. :(

Maybe after I finish some of my back-log, and throw a hundred hours on Planet Puzzle League next week, I'll prep for Battle Revolution and Online tournaments.
