First Reactions To GODZILLA Come Roaring In

If I had to guess, the movie will go like this:
Humans get attacked by strange MUTOs; army can't stop them; crazy Asian guy's like, "I know, let's lure that big lizard thing we found a long time ago to kill these MUTOs," epic battle at the end kills all MUTOs, Godzilla goes back into the sea and waits for sequel.

yeah, I think there's a big difference between the kind of 'character drama' a guy like Edwards can pull off versus Dean fucking Devlin.

I don't mind the human drama as long as the monster action (brief or not) is pulled off.

Watch some of the most recent Godzilla films (2004 - 2000). My most recent watch was Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, where Godzilla shows up in parts until the finale where there's a huge battle between him and Megaguirus.

Well, not really. The human drama could be very interesting.

I'll try and track that one down. Thanks.

Godzilla with very little Gozilla, a shyamalan twist.

No, if he was doing the movie, the twist would be that in actually wasn't a giant lizard creature, but a man in a suit that's actually terrorizing a bunch of tiny people he discovered.

Just got back from a screening of #JAWS. Movie was well done but you get very little of the title shark. People will get restless.

I expected this movie to play more off the suspense of slowly seeing Godzilla then his actual appearnce anyway. The original played off this same concept.

Just got back from a screening of #ALIEN. Movie was well done but you get very little of the title alien. People will get restless.

This can be done with any monster movie.

Did people live under water in Jaws ?

Thats like saying Godzilla comes out of the desert where people are trekking and eats them from under the ground

The whole idea of jaws was in the vast water the shark was hidden. Where is Godzilla hiding when the cities and land is being destroyed

There day 0 (Thursday night "imax") and can't freakin wait! Now to avoid spoilers for the next two weeks!

A movie that is all about Godzilla isn't a movie. Also, saving most of the monster for the end worked pretty well for Jaws didn't it?

As long as the story is compelling and not boring it will be great anyway, Godzilla should keep that mistery and mistisicism, no need to have him in all scenes.

But when he is on screen it should be incredible badass if not all build up gets lost.

Cant wait.

Also in the water?

Well, Godzilla does live mostly underwater...

Actually, the whole idea of Jaws was that they had little confidence in how believable the shark model looked, so they did everything they could to obscure it or selected shots where it wasn't on screen for long. In doing so, they discovered a wonderful little paradigm: sometimes, especially when it comes to thrillers and horror, less is more.

See also: Alien.

EDIT: I get that comparing a shark in the sea is different from a huge monster in a populated city. I'm just trying to say that, just because we don't see a ton of Godzilla, it doesn't inherently make it a bad film. Some of the best horror/thrillers don't show much of the titular creature.

Now that I think of it, didn't Monsters also take this same approach?

Monsters had almost no monsters in it at all.

Which would have been fine if there was a story, or a script, or actors able to do anything with the lack of the first two things.

I don't mind that there's some withholding of the big G in this return. Withholding is good if executed correctly. That he's using ALIEN and Jurassic Park as models is a really good sign, in fact. And the Jaws comparison upthread is great. Love that.

When will we get the Godzilla movie that is ABOUT Godzilla? I'm talking chronicling his day, following him as he walks through the city, hearing his inner monologue about the moral quandaries he is facing, etc.

Internal Monologue *screams internally

Restraint is good also. I'm no longer 12 years old where I need tons of visual overload to tell me I'm having an awesome time; I like to use my brain and imagination sometimes too.

They probably edited out a lot of scenes with Godzilla on screen because the lizard had problems reading his lines and conveying his emotions so they led human actors carry the plot.

Godzilla being dormant under water. Jaws being active under water. ThT is what I meant its a wrong comparison. Godzilla wasn't going into hiding repeatedly it was dormant. Jaws was hiding and actively terrorizing

If I remember, it's sort of in the films' tradition that Godzilla retreats into the ocean numerous times.

I expect 7/10 and above.

which is totally fine.

I just want it to be neat Godzilla movie. Not like the franchise has a high bar for plot to live up to.

most of the movies have spend lots of time showing humans plotting or reacting to the threat .

Everyone seems to be forgetting that in the original 1954 version of Gojira, I think you saw Godzilla for about 15-20min TOTAL, and that movie was 96min long....

If monster movies (sharks included) were all monster people would probably complain of shallowness.

It's not so much that people are forgetting, it's that I think there's a general pop-culture memory of Godzilla, and it doesn't include having watched a lot of the movies.

People tend to think a Godzilla movie is essentially just professional wrestling with weirder costumes.

Yeah, but Godzilla movies aren't thrillers or horror movies.

Yeah, but Godzilla movies aren't thrillers or horror movies.

They have been. They've been goofy action romps, they've been mild-mannered kids movies, and they've been serious minded thrillers.

The first one is straight up horror, really. Especially when you keep in mind it's essentially Honda trying to work out an entire culture's attempt to cope with paying the cost for the world's nuclear ambitions.
