First Reactions To GODZILLA Come Roaring In

Just got out and...it was good! Intense from the start and effectively builds and builds. Edwards does a great job holding things back until the finale. Some of the character stuff is rushed and Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe are useless, but it's a lot of fun.

More to come.

Was there enough Godzilla for you?

Is the tone and atmosphere in line with the trailer and marketing? I've been burned too many times by fantastic trailers.

I'll be writing a full review of this, but will save it for the embargo which I believe is the 10th. Happy to answer any questions.

Yes, that aspect was perfect.

Yeah, very accurate. Except David Strathairn's speech isn't the film. It would've felt very out of place, glad they cut it.

Here's what another member who attended a screening had to say about Godzilla's screen time.

From Box Office Forums

This is complete garbage. Godzilla has plenty (PLENTY) of screen time in the film. Its so well-paced that I don't even remember when Godzilla first showed up in the film. Edwards was brilliant at tantalizing the audience. The actors never get in the way of the action. Godzilla is first foremost a monster a film and Edwards makes sure we know this.

There are some great set pieces that involve the human characters too. It never feels like they're wasted and their integration to the plot never seems extraneous or out of place.

Is that the one where he's speaking to the troops or whatever? If so I'm glad they cut it too.

Yeah. Despite complaints, I really dug the build-up and wouldn't call it slow whatsoever. There's enough going on the first hour or so that lays the ground for what's to come.

How's the choreography for the Muto/Godzilla fights...without spoiling it too much I guess? I've been wondering how they would handle this since this Godzilla doesn't seem very mobile.

Awesome, that's great to hear

Okay, last question, maybe kind of specific: I've never been the biggest Godzilla fan, but one of the things that always turned me off was that I found the fights silly. Obviously they felt like guys in suits grappling and hitting each other rather than giant creatures.

So I guess my question is, how are the fights? Are they brutal and more animalistic* rather than the style from the old movies?

*And by animalistic, well I guess that's hard to explain. Like check out this video of lions fighting. There's this natural brutality to how the predators fight

I'm happy to hear this. I was getting a little nervous hearing some people say there wasn't enough Godzilla.

Hail to the KING.

How creeped out will we be come Avengers: Age of Ultron?

I imagine there are much bigger things to worry about with that movie.

They really pull it off. Not real spoilers, but being safe:
You can feel the actual weight to the monsters as they fight in the city. There's a few (literally) awesome shots that will have your mouth agape.

See above. Yeah, it's quite like that video and they aren't silly like Pacific Rim. Unlike that film, this feels like something tangible and has a realistic bent towards it. Particularly aided by the fact that Edwards actually cares about his characters, for the most part.

Is the atomic breath the "money shot" of the movie? Or is something else the money shot?
How does the atomic breath look like?
Are there many easter eggs throughout that we should look for?

Atomic breath:

There are two and yes, they are definitely the money shots (two out of about four money shots). It's electric blue and both time it uses it the audience went nuts.

Easter eggs:

Bryan Cranston's son has a Godzilla poster in his bedroom at the beginning. You can see Gareth Edwards in the casino in Las Vegas. I haven't seen any other Godzilla films outside of Emmerich's, which I don't remember that well, so there are probably more.

So stoked you liked it Expendable. All my boxes are checked. Body free to engage full HYPE MODE.

Nice! Right now I'm like at a B. Cloverfield still beats it for the immersion factor in monster movies. While the setpieces are amazing in a design sense, I feel like some of them were only used to about 80% of their potential. When it comes to a summer blockbuster I'd be surprised if any are better constructed than this though.

i like keeping my expectations low, if its better than godzilla 1998 and less "dumb" than final wars, ill be ok ;)

fucking imax 3D tickets are like $18 :(

Oh, I saw it fake IMAX and 3D. 3D wasn't distracting, but not sure if it made it all that much more immersive. The sound is quite incredible, though, and loved Desplat's score, super propulsive.

I knew Desplat was gonna be good for this. I loved "My Love is Always Here" from Harry Potter.

I'm looking forward to Godzilla even though I know not much about the monster it self it but atomic breath sounds really stupid.

I just want a giant lizard.

Let's put it this way.. Godzilla without atomic breath would be like Rocky without boxing gloves. Or Star Wars without the force. Or Jaws with no shark.

Wasn't that just a blast of compressed air?

Edit: "Power Breath" or some such, but not really like classic Atomic Breath.

In the script, it was called "power breath" and all it was him breathing on cars, and they exploded to give the appearance of fire breath. Which was only added in the last minute because fans complained

That's disappointing to read but I can't wait to see this. This and Transformers are my most looked forward to films this season.

This is the Godzilla movie we need and deserve. I'm trying not to let my hype get into orbit levels, since I really want to avoid any disappointment. Still trying to decide if I want to see this on imax or not. The imax is 3D only here and I've never seen a 3D movie. My eyes are pretty bad so I didn't think I'd even be able to appreciate it, but I was able to use a 3DS (so I assume I can use the glasses for this).

Is a 3D movie viewable without the glasses, or does it alter the screen in some fundamental way? Not really looking to waste 20 minutes driving one way and $18 on a ticket to find out I can't watch or enjoy the movie.

No, you can't watch a 3D movie without the glasses. It will look horrible.

Right, so I figured it's ambiguous enough for the guy who just wants to see a giant lizard. :)

I watched Godzilla 1998 yesterday and man, that was terrible. I rather live in world of atomic breath than endure that again.

It just seems atomic breath seems more disconnecting to the reality compared to just a giant lizard. Am I'm making sense, probably not.

So you're saying atomic breath isn't realistic because it breaks the believability of a 350ft-tall giant lizard?
