I get to watch the movie next wednesday with my wife, and every seat gets a free beer, so i get two free beers!

Imagine how people who have been waiting for this movie since 2010 feel. I have a friend who accidentally predicted this movie a couple of weeks before it was even rumored to be in the works.

I've been waiting since 2004, when Toho put Godzilla in hibernation. And hell, been waiting for a film like the original/85 even longer. GMK was basically the only thing that came remotely close, and I while loved that film greatly, after finally receiving my Hong Kong Godzilla 1985 bootleg, I realize GMK still wasn't the right tone. However, this film looks like it might hit ALL my buttons.

I guess I don't really have any excuses considering it doesn't cost me anything to see (the perks of working at a theater). I'll go check it out as a break from studying that weekend.

Speaking of which, it's kinda cool how Toho put Godzilla on ice after Final Wars, specifically saying they wanted to give the franchise a 10-year break...and then sure enough, exactly 10 years later, we have a new Godzilla movie.

That's cause Final Wars bombed. If the movie was a hit, chances are, Toho might have pumped out a few more.

I asked and don't think I got a reply but was the 1954 movie acknowledged in this one?
I saw that there was mention of a Godzilla poster in the film so I was wondering if the '54 movie was actually a movie within the movie based on true encounters until Watanabe tells us what really happened.

Nope. Just an Easter egg.

I might be leaning closer to B+ GAF, some of my problems have waned and the awesomeness has stuck a few days out. Need to see this one again!

So does this movie build off the idea that
the initial Godzilla sighting in 1954 inspired all of the other movies, and that they all exist in this world?
Or was that just playful fan speculation?

It builds off that idea.
So the guy that said "Nope" a few posts above is partially wrong? I guess they don't go out of their way to mention but it could be true? Cool.

Another question: That shot of Godzilla coming out of the water by the "testing site"... is it awesome? Do we fully see him/her (which is it, btw?) or was it cut?

My hype meter has reached its max. Any excess hype bubbles out the top and drains down the sides, becoming despair. Despair that we still have to wait another week

This reads like you actually believe the game was released in the 60's lol.

How could the writers have known?

Its really cool that its just coincidence and that come his 60th anniversary, he's getting another film (one that seems to be good at that)

Coincidence or not, pretty cool

I've never seen the 1954 movie (or any other Godzilla except for Emmerich), but you can refer to my posts where I discuss what the opening scenes are, hinting towards that.

And that's in that section.
No, just a tease...what you see in the trailers.

Well it's not really a coincidence since the game came out in a world where Godzilla movies were indeed made year after year for decades. That's the joke. The game happened to release on Godzilla's 50th anniversary year and thus the mention.

Edit @Expendable: You ever plan to sit down and watch the original? Such a terrific film, score and tone. I'd even go against the grain and recommend the U.S. version too.

Ahhh, i see your point. Still, para-medic was right bro, godzilla's still relevant 50, 60 years later

Is the soft music in this trailer in the movie? It sounds beautiful.

The first part? I believe so, can't quite place it though. The score is GREAT.

Most definitely.

Disappointed there is no Godzilla theme, but I'll still be there.
I was kinda tore on this too. Part of me wanted the new soundtrack to be a "best of" type thing with a bunch of Ifukube tunes

In the end, I'm glad they decided to do their own thing. I want this movie to stand on its own and build a new legacy, not just ride on the coat tails of the rest of the franchise.

I don't think it's a matter of "riding the coat-tails" here. Not having the theme is a bit disappointing precisely because this movie isn't really trying to distance itself from the original. It's trying to synthesize all the best elements of it. That theme is one of those elements.

It'd be like saying Casino Royale shouldn't have had the Bond theme in any way so Bond can build a new legacy. I don't know if that would have been a good call.

But then again, it's not like Alexander Desplat isn't going to cook up a beautiful score that stands on its own. He's one of the best currently working.

To clarify, I would have been happy if they had included the original theme.

But I appreciate them not leaning on it for nostalgic reasons. It's kinda ballsy to omit it really; a way of showing this movie can stand on its own.

I wish they would of done the same thing as the Star Trek 09 movie, they had new music but they had a remixed version of the original Star Trek theme for the closing credits.

Wowwwww. Really really fun movie. I don't want to spoil anything. Elizabeth Olsen is stunning in person. :o

I'm glad it's getting good reactions, but isn't that how every big tentpole movie goes when it first gets reactions before release? I hope it's great as a Gojira nerd.

Been waiting since 2004 as well. I used to collect the vinyl toys even. But they were lost in hurricane Katrina. :(

I'm so excited to watch this. It's been a long time. It's time for Godzilla to come back in some form.

Please master! Tell me of precious.... did it live up to the hype? You need not elaborate... but a word is all we beg <3
Yes. The buildup is so fucking tense and it's one of the reasons why I love this movie. Quite a few laughs too.
