First Trailer for Disney's Big Hero 6 (Based on a Marvel Comic)

It's inspired by an extremely obscure Marvel comic published in the late 90's called "Sunfire & Big Hero 6."

The original story was the brainchild of Duncan Rouleau + Steven T. Seagle, two of the four members of the "Man of Action" creative team (Ben 10, Generator Rex, Ultimate Spiderman, Gormiti, Monsuno, etc.), but I assume the Disney-ification will take it in a different direction from the obscure comics.

Huh...I see. Gonna have to watch this now.

It sounds super quirky and refreshing for a comic book film and I can't WAIT to watch it.

Especially since the background images are going to be like this:

Probably because not all of it is final yet.

How is that even possible at this point in development? Inside Out isn't coming out until next year and we've had the main cast for that since last summer. I thought animated movies HAD to cast roles earlier because the voices needed to be recorded before animation can be done for those scenes. Is this reason to believe there may be production problems?

I doubt they be that different. The comics were pretty lighthearted and fun.

Looks like they are going for a more kid friendly, goofy direction for this compared to what I Google being in the comics. I've not read the comics but looking up images has the characters looking older/bolder.

Still, I really dig the hybrid Tokyo/US world:

Wow. I'm guessing you don't wear glasses or care that 2D screenings tend to die out because of the 3D monopoly on theatres. IMAX 2D is becoming incredibly rare if it's not a Nolan movie. Do you think 3D enhances/improves every movie you've seen it with? Like the darker, blurrier picture (thankfully post-conversion is getting better)?

I do wear glasses, I just deal with it. IMAX 3D is the reason I like 3D so much, done correctly its a entirely different experience. Too bad about 2D films in your area, but near me you can still get it all.

I don't think everything should be 3D. I'm fine with my drama heavy films being in 2D (wallstreet, the master etc. ), but I want action/fantasy flicks to be in 3D. If your using CGI then output to 3D.

ITS
NOT
MAHVEL BAYBEE!!

In July 1998, Big Hero 6 debuted at the #89th best selling Comic Book with only 29K estimated preorders in the USA. After September it dropped below 2K each month.

Big Hero 6 is a really great Marvel property to use because, while it's still technically Marvel + Comic Books + Superheroes and all that, it doesn't tie Disney down to the mountains of Iron Man / Spiderman / X-Men / etc. stuff out there.

It offers something super-obscure we've never seen before outside of a few dedicated Marvel readers, so it's really something that Disney can grab hold of and shape how they want.

Casting is usually done early on, like right after the visual development (art style) of the film is finalized. Not sure what would be keeping them from revealing the cast (although a few of the cast members have been confirmed). They can still be using placeholders on some of the characters, until they find a voice they like or decide to go back and re-record. It might also just be Disney being weird about it lol.

EDIT: I just realized how many characters may actually be in this, it might just be Disney being weird.

I say they did a pretty fine job Disney-fying it. The movie looks good.

Been hyped for this for a while.

Although I liked Ralph better than Frozen, there's no denying that Frozen went back to Disney-esque roots with its theme and format. It's interesting to me how Disney has allowed the team to follow Frozen with a non-musical animated film.

I am surprised to see that Jennifer Lee was not on this project. Perhaps she's too busy with Ralph 2.

There's not a single animation team that's churning these movies out. Animated feature movie takes 4-5 years to make so Wreck-it-Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6 have all been in production simultaneously.

That's true, although Big Hero was actually green lit in May or June of 2012. I believe it was pitched in late 2011 if memory serves me right. They obviously had the hype of Ralph around that time, so it's not too surprising they went with this route after initial posturing from the Marvel acquisition in 2009.

This is out in November in the US. The current link in the OP is from Disney UK. The February date in the trailer almost gave me a heart attack before I realized that.

How has the cast for this STILL not been officially released?! I don't get why Disney is being so secretive about it.

Maya Rudolph, Jamie Chung and T.J. Miller have been officially announced. IMDB lists Josh Hutcherson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Freddie Highmore as being in the cast, but IMDB can be flaky with information pre-release.

No way there's a Fury cameo right? I'm still kinda shaky on how this relates to the rest of the Marvel universe in the comics although I'm well aware this isn't related to the MCU.

This is the second piece of footage Disney has released. A year ago, they gave us a great shot of San Fransokyo. Fun fact: that little bit of footage was released before anything from Frozen had been officially released (the Frozen teaser came out a month afterward).

I believe in the comics that this was relatively unattached to anything else. I highly doubt that we'll see any overt mentions of other Marvel properties.

Yeah they based in Japan so they don't get to team up much. Their biggest was with Alpha Flight, and recently Spiderman recruited them to help save the world.

So glad to be living in the new renaissance of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

It's a great time to see Disney movies. I feel all giddy inside just waiting for this movie. Reminds me of when I was a kid. :-)
Disney has been on a roll recently- if this is even half as good as the current stuff we're in for a treat.

Tangled > Frozen > The Princess & The Frog > Wreck-it Ralph

Looks fun! It's awesome to see Disney turn around their own movies and successful. On another note, I think they didn't put Marvel in the title, so to not confuse viewers that this belongs with their other live action franchises.

There's no way Disney could pump the brakes fully on the direction they were going, these films have years of time, money and man power invested in them.

Before Tangled Disney saw WiR and "boys movies" as the way they should go because of how shit was going. Tangled being a stand out hit is why we got CGI Frozen instead of 2D Snow Queen. The only way they can make a Musical follow up anytime soon is to fast track something for next year ... which I expect them to do.

Outside of that the only way you're gonna see the ripple effect of Frozen's success is gonna be in the coming years when films that ARN'T too far into production can be musicfied. Maybe that Zoo film? Maybe that Jungle Girl film? IDK.

Everyone seems pretty positive about this so far?

Good.

Pretty sure they'll get a PG rating for thematic elements, violence.

Also, what I know about the plot.. gives it a bit of bite, which should be surprising for people.

The teaser is adorable and people don't know what Baymax represents yet. :-D

Glad the teaser is good. When the Frozen teaser came out, there was all sorts of revolt on my Facebook feed over it. I spent almost a year before Frozen came out trying to tell people that Olaf wasn't going to annoy them, that the film wasn't some horrible anti-woman propaganda, and that they were going to love the film and the music in the film. I mean, I was like "GUYS/GALS! It's got music from the people who made AVENUE Q. It has people you like from TV shows and musicals you like. It's the exact opposite of anti-women. It's about EMPOWERMENT."

Then the film came out and I never got an apology for all the crap debates I had to endure where I had to defend Frozen from people who read a shitty blog post from some jump to conclusions women's studies student. Yet, everyone who was so down on the film.. saw the film and loved it. They left humming the tunes and singing it's praises. I mean, you're freaking welcome. They should TRUST me sometime. I also told them that The Lego Movie was going to be awesome and they should go see it. People should trust me on animated films. I know my stuff.

With this one, I'm afraid people will dismiss it because of the character design and the somewhat "young" look to the main character.

Did you like Captain America? Did you like Rise of the Guardians? Are you a DeviantArt regular? C'mon. Please DAY ONE on Big Hero 6. It's made for you, damn it. It's not a musical, we have GIANTS and MOANA for that... Also, FEAST will be interesting from a technical standpoint.
