Flags from history

The Japanese prefecture flags are reminiscent of family crests.

One of these look familiar?

Why am I seeing a Sharingan?

When I was in third grade I got a book of flags from our school library. Found a lot of cool ones, sketched them out in my notebook and I put my favorite one on the cover. Well since our history class wasn't that in depth yet, I was called into the office to see if I was a Nazi Sympathizer.

I always liked the flag for the Second Mexican Empire, though I could do without the ornaments in the corners. Used from 1863-1867.

I was always a huge fan of this flag. Used during the Texas Revolution but I think the design was borrowed from somewhere else.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_take_it

Come and take it" is an American patriotic slogan most notably used in 1778 at Fort Morris in Georgia during the American Revolution, and later in 1835 during the Texas Revolution. The phrase is similar to Molon labe, which is a classical expression of defiance reportedly spoken by King Leonidas I in response to the Persian army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Used 3 times in a badass manner

Blue and White were Portugal's true national colors before the Republic.

IMO, the Blue and White have more historical significance then the current republican Green and Red that barely has any meaning.

(yeah this one is the epitome of irrealistic)

My personal favourite has to be the original Union Flag.

They could have been really obvious and lazy by putting the flags of England and Scotland next to each other or quartered like other royal banners, but that design is just genius (if you don't mind England in front of Scotland that is). And they did it all the way back in 1606, it's almost like a modern logo.

Act of Union was 1707, no?

Act of Union was 1707, no?
The Act of Union represents when England and Scotland formally became a single kingdom but they had already been in a personal union for a 100 years at that point as technically separate states with a single monarch. The original union flag was introduced in 1606 to represent this personal union on the seas.

So if Scotland ends up seceding, what will happen to the Union Jack? A while flag with red cross and lions?

They want to remain a monarchy so it'll go back to the pre 1707 arrangement I guess. The Union Jack will remain at least for England.

Unity with who?

The blue part is supposed to represent the French-speaking Canadians, proportionally to the red part (which in that flag would represent the English-speaking Canadians, even though it's not the intent in the official flag).

I don't necessarily agree with the political idea but I find it a nice design.
