Flying enemies in games: universally horrible

Flying bosses tend to be really cool, but you definitely have a point. The flying 'filler' type enemies are always irritating, almost as a rule.

The ones that only take like one or two shots to take down, but they're quick and there's a fucking ton of them at once.

Birds in NG1 are kinda fun to fight for me. Dunno why. These guys on the other-hand can go to hell..

stuff like Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania I can understand, but first or third person shooters with hitscan weapons... just learn to look up you dingbats. flying enemies are great fun to fight in games like that.

Oh but you see, Borderlands 2 isn't hitscan anymore like the first game, it's actual projectiles now. Normally a great change, but not for flying enemies which there are more of now.

I fucking knew OP was going to mention Borderlands.

Mothrakk was genuinely the only enemy in that game that scared the shit out of me. Good golly is that thing huge.

The worst part about flying enemies is when you're on a vehicle. Turret can't reach high enough, so finding that proper angle is infuriating. Pretty much forcing you to get out. Is that the design decision to get out of the vehicle?

But I don't really have an issue with the Rakks, as someone mentioned they have a big hitbox and not a problem on PC with superior accuracy of the mouse.

Get regular turret runner, back up, lock on (by pressing A on 360, not sure about PC or PS3). Go back and forth while firing. There's now a dead Mothrakk to loot.

Even better is when you whittle it's health to just about dead, and hit him with a corrosive sniper shot. Massive damage + Massive EXP.

Flying enemies that are bosses? Fine. Usually they lead to some pretty epic boss fights if they're done right.

Little flying regular enemies? Fuck 'em. Not in 2D platformers like Castlevania or whatever, you can learn to dodge them and analyze patterns and shit. But in 3D platformers/adventure games/FPS, fuck 'em. I hate Rakks. I hate those little things in Darksiders II. Hate hate haaaaate.

If you ever run into anything small in Darksiders 2, chances are the gun would make quick work of it.

IIRC he spawns close to an area with a "natural" (made out of rocks) bridge. I just went under that so he couldn't hit me with his bombs, and just shot him from there.

I like flying stuff in general, at least on PC. Console games seem to struggle with balancing the higher challenge of a nimble airborne foe with difficulty in keeping a reasonable fix on them.

I'd prefer to see more use of vertical axis for combat, but with ever more focus on gamepad type controllers I doubt this'll happen. Mostly it'll be enemies that are always roughly on the same vertical axis as you.

Wii Mote and Move would be great for flying enemies too I reckon.
