FMV video games

For some reason, I am getting fascinated with FMV games. I guess it is because they are so campy.
You got all the Digital Pictures games. A lot of them have updated releases with better video. You also have the American Laser games. Stuff like Mad Dog McRee and Space Pirates. Then, you have DOS games like The 7th Guest, Ripper, Black Dahlia, and Hell.
There is also modern stuff which I haven't really got into.
Nothing quite beats live action.
What games have you found? Command and Conquer also counts.
 
I hated FMV games. Hated Sewer Shark. Hated my Sega CD. It's the only console I ever regretted getting/asking for as a Christmas present.
 
Krathoon Krathoon you should check out Not For Broadcast from 2022. Most unique game I played all year. FMV game where you operate the cameras on a live news feed, very very silly on-the-nose political satire.
 
A few years old now, but still amazing


I believe this game kinda kicked off the modern FMV scene
 
Also, you got the Tex Murphy games. Tesla Effect is the new one.
Lands of Lore 2 counts as a fmv game.

I really liked Late Shift on PS4. None of the other games from the studio have quite hit the spot in the same way. I also clipped this classic line:

 
I was playing D the other week, still holds up incredibly well. Also played a bit of Phantasmagoria (Saturn) yesterday but man it's rough. Looks like ass and just takes forever to get anywhere. Need to play it with a guide, all I'm interested in is the campy acting.

Lunacy too, I think that's on PSX but I was playing it on the Saturn, holds up well like D.
 
Wing commander 3 has Mark Hamil as Christopher Blair and it was brilliant casting.
not to mention John ryse Davies And TOM Wilson and Malcom McDowell. Just an amazing game and cast.

That's how easily fooled we were. Great ad though. I'll admit I still have a fondness for Night Trap.
 
Games that really lean on the FMV tend to be simplistic and more reaction based. They are great when you don't feel like a really intense game.
 
Need for speed 2015 has fmv cutscenes. The actors look like they were recruited from random people off the street.
 
At the time I used to play the hell out of Privateer 2, with Clive Owen before he became famous.
Kind of glitchy and buggy game, though, and unforgiving gameplay.

I also played Viacom's Dracula Unleashed, the PC version. I remember liking it a lot but recently I watched a youtube video of it and, my god, the acting was so cheesy :D

Wow, that claymation bit at the start is really great! Was that based off an actual game or only done for the ad?
 
I played Roundabout yesterday for the first time. I'm surprised that it was actually fun and addictive, but the game has issues when playing on ps5, the audio often cuts out. The acting is terrible and the story is ridiculous, but that only made it funnier.

For the ad. It's just a fun arty bit (along with the sexy girl, minimalist apartment and everyone wearing leather trousers) to sell the Mega CD as a classy, aspirational, premium piece of hardware. I bought one so I don't know what that says about moi.

Oh you're talking about the interactive movies with the prompts, not actual FMV games that are actually games.

Really, I am talking about all of them, but a true FMV game really leans on using the FMV in the gameplay. Stuff like Night Trap and Double Switch are examples.

A Fork in the Tale is another one that comes to mind.

Toon Struck, Wing Commander, and Pandora Directive are pretty different from Dragons Lair, Psychic Detective, and Mad Dog.
 
Man I was just talking about FMV games with my mate. Looking back I can't think of a more disappointing time and technology than FMV. Maybe those point and click multi media games ? But FMV was pretty bad.

Man, I had a strong love hate relationship with space pirates as a child
 
None of you have really lived until you've played Ripper starring Christopher Walken

I've posted in a different thread, but I've quite enjoyed these 3 modern FMVs. They have good production value and are mostly well acted.

Played a ton of these many years ago when I got a 3DO. Most of them are hilarious and a blast to play.
The early 1990s was a really fun and weird time in gaming.
You had an insane amount of consoles all competing for a relatively small install base.
And apparently noone knew what to do with all the space on those new age CDs, so they filled them with this stuff.
 
I see people shitting on MegaCD's FMV. I won't say you're wrong but while I didn't even bothered to even try crinceworthy games such as night trap and double switch (thanks AVGN), I think Sylpheed is one of the best example of FMV being integrated to the gameplay. It's not that much but i'm sure these huge flat shaded polygons rendered as flat FMV back in the day, on a 16 bit conaole were impressive.
