I arrived in China the other day and was almost immediately greeted with food poisoning. Projectile vomit.. headaches... etc.

I've been on a Asia trip of sorts the last several months and it seems like I get sick in EVER country.. indonesia, nepal, india...wtf? It really seems like it's my body's goal to blast diarrhea in every country I visit.

I fear going to a hospital in any of these countries so I was wondering if neogaf has any useful remedies?

What have you been eating? Lots of street food? Drinking the water?Ice?

Hold on to your butt and drink lots of water. Wouldn't stray far from a toilet if I were you.

This happened to me when I went abroad. I had one of those juice in a cup from a street vendor, literally him pouring juice in the same cup for every person. Big mistake. The juice came from his backpack and the way he casually washed the cups for reuse should have been enough for me to run and not look back. I couldn't get off the toilet.

YES... I had some cup noodles at the hostel. They advertised the hot water as "safe" to drink... I knew something was up when the water came out as simply "warm" buuuut but the stupid self that I am, I continued to finish it.

lol. Well now you know. What about in the other countries?

Aside from saying be careful what you eat, don't drink boiled water, etc. there isn't much more to add. Some people are more susceptible to this than others. I got the Curse of the Pharaohs while in Egypt a few years back and simply wanted to die, but other than that I"ve been all over the world and haven't had any other problems.

I would have jetted off with some stoppers like Loperamide, rather than risk the uphill battle of finding a pharmacy or hospital IF you're away from the big cities. In India, it's no big issue with the language barrier and the well-stocked over the counter pharmaceuticals availability, but I can't recall from my time in China what the situation is like.

Keep the fluids up, buddy.

All kinds of things.... and the frustrating thing is that each case was unique.

Indonesia: Pasta. This one was probably the worst... poo'd so much it turned green.

India: Food that a family gave to me on the train. Everything I read about train travel in India told me never to accept food from anyone... but they kept insisting and they were so kind that I took a few bites before telling them I was full. Those few bites were all it took.

Nepal: Eggs... at least I suspect it was the eggs. It was the only thing my g/f and I ate in common and we both became violently sick. I shit so much I literally shit the bed.

You should have been wary as soon as you noticed the water was advertised as "safe."

OP you're getting stronger. Soon you'll reach your final form.
Lol. Sometimes by not allowing yourself to actually settle down with some germs it just fucks you over harder. I've been all over abroad and have yet to get sick anywhere. Boost your immune system with some garlic, peppers, lemon, among others foods that have healthy properties. Keep that sphincter tight OP.

Damn man. Sounds terrible.

Can't be fun traveling chained to a toilet. Hope you feel better soon so you can enjoy your trip!

Hilarious. How do you come up with this stuff.

Considering how often it happens, I wonder if it's just the way your digestive system handles new food. Just don't give up, the "hole-in-the-wall"s and street vendors sells the best stuff.

Oh man! Visiting China already? I wish I was able to meet up with ya. Anyways, don't do the cup noodle stuff, the food in China is already cheap enough. Are you in a rural area of China? Also I highly suggest some of the Muslim restaurants, they've always done a better job at keeping their food clean. My experience with China is getting intensely sick during about 1 month. Either way, best of luck man, and I hope you and the gal enjoy the stay!

I think it's hilarious that you not only make a rookie travelling mistake, but do it repeatedly in the same year.

I think you should go take a shower, maybe drink in some of the water while under it and then brush your teeth while running water over your toothbrush. Go for the trifecta.

One remedy is Pepto Bismol or Kaopectate (the generic name is "Bismuth Subsalicylate"). No joke. It comes in pill and liquid form, get the pill form so you can take it anywhere. It does the following according to Wikipedia: As a derivative of salicylic acid, bismuth salicylate displays anti-inflammatory and bactericidal action, and also acts as an antacid.

I don't know if this is sold over-the-counter or if you need a doctor's prescription from a hospital to get it at a pharmacy in China. Just write "Bismuth Subsalicylate" on a piece of paper and give it to a trustworthy pharmacist. Follow the directions. Don't freak out if your stools turn black after taking it, that's normal. If you need exact instructions on "Bismuth Subsalicylate" just go to the Pepto Bismol website and read the label/drug info.

Basically, this stuff will grab whatever food bacteria has screwed your insides and take it right out of you.

Drink plenty of clean bottled water, eat yogurt with active yogurt cultures if available. This will help with the gastrointestinal healing.

Believe me, I've been through the worst food poisoning in Japan several years ago- "Bismuth Subsalicylate" works. Don't leave home without it. I'm also getting over food poisoning from several weeks ago, and I took six 500 mg doses every hour of Pepto Bismol and my body got back to normal after several days.

On a final note, I will never eat coleslaw in a restaurant ever again because this is what made me sick this month.

Gotta figure out why Pepto is not sold in Singapore...it was a vital travel item for awhile.

Had a toxicology lecture with the lecturer saying that basically Asian countries water sanitation is pretty bad in comparison to Europe and America.

Thanks, I came up through Vietnam and I'm in Kunming right now. Not a bad city, but I'll be leaving here tomorrow to go to Dali and then a few other southern Chinese destinations before making my way up north.

Being sick and traveling, that sounds like Hell. I don't envy it. Especially with the travels in China. Can be a cluttered mess. Keep a close eye on your pockets anywhere you go and be cautious of prices as well.

Who would have guessed?
He also noted that more than likely from Asian countries you'll likely get E.Coli from their waters unless you're in India where it's more likely Cholera =P
Think I got E.Coli when I was at Hong Kong, never gonna drink the tap waters in another country again XD
