Foot-In-Mouth outbreak at GameTrailers, attacks Cliffy B over defending Phil Fish.

Ahh, I still don't perceive that as racist, by my personal definition I'd consider it rude but there's no particularly derogatory remark in there about his race or Japanese people in general.

As I suspected, Beer is the one at fault here.
Both of them are at fault. They both acted like big babies in public instead of clamming up.

It's at the very least really fucking offensive. Talking to people who don't speak your native language is hard, we don't need assholes like Marcus Beer also analyzing our performance.

holy shit. Fuck this guy.

No one looks good coming out of this mess. Phil had a legitimate point but shit all over it with the way he carried on. The journalist came off as diluted crybaby and highlighted a huge issue with games journalism with his symbiotic relationship bullshit and his threats to not cover possibly good games because of a shitty personal vendetta. So embarrassing. The whole thing. Cliffy's advice seems like the best advice at this point but it's going to take some pride swallowing to reverse this course.

Has anyone got a link or background about the hate/abuse GT was giving Phil Fish?

I'd be interested as I haven't been following this.
Game Informer was developing a story on MS doing a 180 on indie games on the Xbox one. They and some other outlets asked Jonathan Blow (Braid) and Phil Fish (Fez) for their opinions on the developing story, which Blow and Fish felt were rumors. They tweeted about being asked and indicated they didn't appreciate being asked to comment about a rumor. Marcus Beer then went on a profanity-laced tirade on a Game Trailers podcast against Blow and Fish. Fish over-reacted and cancelled Fez 2. Bleszinski has the audacity to give Fish some advice about how to handle the vitriol being directed to him. Game Trailers then decided they need more hits.

This is almost eerie (although predictable): earlier today I literally sat here reading about Fish's meltdown and was thinking, "you know what would make this into a way bigger shitstorm? If CliffyB came out to defend Fish against the internet."

You donÂ’t owe a damned thing to any gaming journalist.... You DO owe a great product to your community, something I hope youÂ’ll resume doing some time in the near future....

For me, this statement was the main take away regarding the controversy. The way I see it, gaming journalist are making a living off the products from game developers and game developers need the gaming community to buy their products. Although there is definitely a symbiotic relationship between all sides, game developers can exist without the journalist and not the other way around.

I mean, they keep wanting to talk about the internet hate machine, but we're talking about grown men acting as professionals who constantly spout out stuff like "choke on it", and call people "tosspots" and "dickbags". It's so hypocritical I could laugh. They're not above the internet hate machine, they're all part of it.
This is the only thing that comes to mind when I hear "choke on it":

Such a good movie

I feel like if Cliffy hears something negative about the gaming community he comes a running to put his 2 cents in and get some of that spotlight for himself. Doesn't he make games anymore?
To be fair, wasn't it fairly well known that him and Fish were friends? This was also a originally a post on his own blog GT just decided to run with.

That being said, I think his FUCK THE HATERS 'advice' is terrible and will just lead to Fish repeating the same PR mistakes he'll make a half-arsed attempt to pass off as a Kaufman tribute which'll build up into yet another public meltdown over nothing.

Really happy the people over at GT have managed to put the focus on themselves again.

I was worried Beer (and GT by extension?) were going to get off scott free for that bs because Fish leaving was getting to be the big takeway of the story.

Also good callout on Cliffy's part. I might not always agree with the guy but the way he stood up and supported Fish as a fellow creative who's had to deal with these attacks and this kind of abuse himself is solid. I respect that.

If I have to take sides between two games industry figures who are not on their best behavior (and I don't, but I will), I will weigh their respective contributions to gaming.

Phil Fish made a cool game that I quite enjoyed, and he certainly has the potential to make several more cool games. Making games is hard as fuck, and I respect anyone who can stick with a project until its done. His game contained nothing insulting or offensive, and I don't give a shit about his poor social skills.

Marcus Beer, on the other hand, offers commentary on video games (and the people who make them, unfortunately), which could not be more worthless in the grand scheme of things, especially given how easy it is to do and how many people do it. Marcus's job is to talk about entertainment and be entertaining, and when he's an asshole, that's inseparable from his "work" as a commentator.

I finally read the transcript of his statements thanks to Klepek's article on Giant Bomb, and he comes off as a pathetic, impotent nobody lashing out at people who actually create something worthwhile for a living.

I don't even know what the hell is happening anymore. I feel like every single person who's stepped into this drama arena is trying their hardest to embarass themselves.

You do know its a Futurama quote right?.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic1YLkpl1Do

People need to remember this, he wasn't actually suggesting someone should kill themselves (if he was being serious I'd be very opposite on this) - he was using a quote from a very popular show (quite funny one in fact IMO) as a means to an end..

Just wanna quote this again in hopes more people see it because they keep bringing this crap up.

Not that I would care even if it wasn't just a funny quote. Some overly depressed suicidals getting their feelings hurt in this thread saying its not cool to bully someone by saying kill yourself and then turn to cheer on the dude Beer whose entire job is to be a useless bully asshole.

He actually said that >_<; What a douchler.

Its like some kind of douchemancentipede.

I'll be honest, I didn't recognise the name Marcus Beer or the "Annoyed Gamer" brand before this whole episode, so this might have coloured my perception of him (being a nobody in no position to attack and abuse two indie developers I respect (well, Blow moreso than Fish, but whatever, at the very least I respect his work and his honesty)).

That said, after seeing the quotes other people are posting and see more history of the annoyed gamer - fuck that guy, seriously. That some people have decided to latch onto him in this debate just to get some more potshots off at Fish is pretty damning. They must really hate Fish's guts/manner/behaviour to stomach this annoyed gamer guy to that extent.

Let me tell you, these last few days have done absolute wonders for the public perception of this art/industry.

Absolute wonders indeed.

I don't see why Fish got so upset about being asked for a comment. He's an indie game developer who is wildly outspoken about issues with the system, so he's a perfect guy to go to about the development. If he didn't want to comment, all he had to do was say 'no comment at this time'

If he wanted to make a point about games journalism he could have said 'No comment until someone actually does some work and gets it confirmed'

Getting pissed simply because you were asked to comment on a subject you're directly involved with and often vocal about is just infantile.

That said, Beers is an idiot for trying to threaten them with reduced coverage. You cover what the audience wants or they go elsewhere, so he'd be covering Fish's game no matter what.

I can't decide which side of this feud is more intolerable. Cliff is right though, Phil doesn't owe anything to the media but he should learn tact or or run everything through a PR firm.

edit: I still think Phil will be back to working on Fez 2 within the week.

So, do you think Cliff is just using the exchange as a platform to promote his own blog or are there valuable lessons to be learned for both aspiring and successful developers?

Lots of things can be said about Cliff, but I hardly can see him caring about hits in his blog at all...

Phil Fish and Cliffy B seem like a douchebag match made in heaven.

Where do people get this from? Just leave them both alone.. what should we care how their personalities are? They are both talented people that have a lot to offer to the medium. Should we really be telling these artists that they do not belong in the industry?

This is starting to get scary.

(I thought Cliffy's open letter was well meant, nothing he should be attacked by GT by at least)

He's been on Weekend Confirmed once or twice and he's mostly not that bad a dude. I don't think his perspective is in any way unique or valuable to the industry, though.

I guess I knew of him from a couple of times I listened to Invisible Walls, but at the time IW was seriously the dumbest, shallowest podcast I had ever heard. Maybe it's better now, I don't know.

Absolutely, Phil Fish overreacted about as badly as anyone could have in his position but at least he could potentially come back quietly and possibly create something of value. Marcus Beer seems like nothing more than a loud mouth representative of the worst of what gaming journalism has to offer. You could sum up his shitty rant in a sentence: You didn't scratch our back so we won't be scratching yours. To me it's hilarious to be so transparent about the shittiest practices of that profession.

Let me tell you, these last few days have done absolute wonders for the public perception of this art/industry.

It's the result of immense hype for the imminent next generation, mixed with a dearth in any news or games to talk about in the present time.

yes, that's what he was quoting but i don't see what point you're trying to make. i don't think he was saying for beer to ACTUALLY kill himself but putting him down nonetheless. especially since the next post was calling him an inconsequential fuck.

personally, i think beer and GT are coming out of this way way ahead. these guys live on clicks. beer's schtick is the "asshole" and he does it surprisingly well. just like paul mooney's is the "angry black guy" and louis theroux is the "naive documentarian" and flula's is the "non english speaker who takes english idioms literally". beer played his part and fish went into nuclear meltdown mode and quit.

GT and Beer = more clicks, more money
Consumers = still tons of good games to play
Fish = made a single decent game and rage quit

I think it's a a bit presumptuous for GT to assert that Cliffy B was just baiting clicks, but then again, Cliffy is an individual who is known for doing just that. In this case though, I think it's pretty obvious that he was being sincere.

He just doesn't want Fish horning in on his racket.

I think Phil Fish opened himself up to public mockery the moment he canceled Fez 2 over some inconsequential bullshit.

Looks like I'm not going to GT anymore if they're just going to be dicks. It's like someone at 4chan's /v/ got hired and was given free reign to say whatever they want.
