Football players intentionally hit referee

That doesn't happen without coach approval.

I guarantee you the coach was behind it, or at least fed them the idea. Those kids should be prosecuted for assault and the coach needs to be suspended for at least a year.
Agreed. I grew up in a hardcore high school football town, and from my experience with the team during my school years, there is little chance that this happened without the knowledge of the coach.

Maybe we will find out when these kids are about to get banned and they decide to rat out the coach.

Wonder if their coach had anything to do with it.

If you take a planned cheap shot to a defenseless person that can result in someone killed or crippled, then you aren't fit for society at the moment. I think this falls under "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes" Have fun in jail.

To me it looked like the second guy almost tripped or tried to stop and stumbled, but the first guy was totally intentional.

But if they both confessed and apologized, I guess I'm wrong. Weird though.

nah the second guy changed direction to specifically hit the ref on the ground. he also got up and started to walk away, not very apologetic.

From AP:

Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.

The incident occurred with approximately a minute left in Friday's game, according to Marble Falls coach Matt Green.
"

I wonder what their teammates were ejected for? If it was for a dirty play or a fight, then the coach really needs to get shit-canned. He's either promoting a thug mentality, or he's an incompetent fool.

The 2 boys at the very least need to be permanently banned from all High School sports.

He tripped and stumbled on his way to drilling a ref that was on the ground 10+ yards away from the ball carrier? What? The little shit even redirected a few yards before diving into the ref because the momentum from the first hit took the ref a little off course. You can clearly see him change his angle after the first safety drills the ref.

Man reading the comments I was expecting the actual hit to be way worse. Didn't look that bad to me, I think jail time is a bit extreme.

You ever got hit got hit be a football player , it not a good feeling even with pads on, it was s dumb thing to do that could have seriously hurt the nref.

Those two players should never be allowed to play another organized game of football again at the least. I have no problem with some sort of charges being set. These were two young men dressed in full pads and helmet intentionally going after a defenseless, unaware person who was pretty much naked compared to the players. That man could've easily been paralyzed for life. I know they are probably minors but this is something that belongs on their record.

As for the coach, he should be fired. Judging by how much we know it is clear this man has little to no control or discipline over his players. I doubt it but if he ordered the hit on the ref then he should be charged as well and barred from ever coaching again.

Maybe I'm going a little too tough but I would at least consider cancelling the rest of the school's football season if I were the state's high school sports governing body.

that's it? lol, maybe I'm just used to old '70 football (soccer)
A helmet to the spine could be very serious. "That's it?"? I took one to my exposed eyebrow, had a shiner for weeks and I credit it for my asymmetrical eye socket. Imagining my unprotected spine is making me cringe. Have you felt a football helmet?

Exactly. My son is only 11 and his helmet is heavy as shit and built like a steel tank. I wouldn't want to be hit by HIM blindsided in my spine, never mind a high school player.

Sports culture is becoming utterly cancerous in this country. As disgusting as their actions are, it's on the back of a culture that creates the impression that a game is important enough to assault someone over. This isn't just bad apples or violent kids, it's systemic.

Texas takes their football really, really, REALLY seriously. The way some people spoke about it while I was down there made it sound like a religion. It was at the high school level too which seemed even more insane to me.

But if the ref is down they can use the opportunity to bring foreign objects on the field. Put the opposing quarterback through a table, hit someone with a chair, etc

I played football when I was younger and I was even goon enough to get smashed while standing on the sidelines and not paying attention to what was going on. It was much worse than the hit in this clip tbh.

Don't get me wrong though, I think what they did was dumb as hell and they should definitely be punished. I just think people are overacting, they really didn't hit him that hard. The first guy just basically pushed him down. It wasn't even a real football hit -_- I don't believe they should have their lives ruined over this.

I don't really know much about "football" but that's pretty dumb. Why would they do that?

It's not dumb. It's malicious.

They would do that because they are high school children who have no idea what it means to hit someone from behind wearing a football helmet. Twice.

This happened on Friday and it's now Monday.

How long does it take to investigate or press charges? I don't understand why the ref didn't press charges immediately, only that he "wants to"?

You realize refs aren't wearing pads?

Let me spear you full speed with pads and a helmet, from behind, when you're not wearing equipment, and completely unaware.

I disagree, but I guess we have different opinions. Introducing more people into our broken system for stuff like this is not something I want to see. There needs to be other methods of handling situations instead of just "throw them in jail!". Which in other words is just "I don't want to deal with the problem, so let's just throw them in a cage for awhile". That is not a solution, and should always be taken as a last resort option.

you know they tackled someone who wasn't wearing any gear at all, while wearing full heavy gear themselves, and completely blindsided him? they could have very very easily done serious damage to the man. and you're here worried about slapping them too hard on the wrist like they're some small kids who were merely misbehaving smh.

criminal charges and potential jail time goes on their record. they should be charged in accordance with the law, period. i don't think anyone is calling to send them to prison for a decade or anything. let a mark on their legal record follow them for years as what they did was very serious

They hit a ref on purpose when he wasn't looking. They even fell into him when he was on the ground.

A ref.

There have been cases of on the field plays of player against player offenses that result in charges. In the least, complete dismissal of that player(s) from the sport. Assaulting a ref is in another league of its own man.

Reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAbJ08Aupxo

Sudden jolt (from the back) without any protective equipment, and that too from a football player with full attire could hurt you very seriously.

I remember being 18 or so going to a church summer pick up game... a guy had been there all summer and he was from Florida. Dude was VERY good and played as if he was an ex college star who did not make it and had a chip on his shoulder.

Well as this game went on he had no respect for any players in this midwest church league let alone the refs... after a call he flat out cracked the ref on the back of the head and he went down hard.

Was instantly kicked out of the league but I remember the shock as I had been playing sports my whole life and while sometimes I disliked a ref once in a while hitting them in the back of the head never crossed my mind.
