For real, has any other console had this many quality games in the first 6 months?

From a mass market and overall perspective, it's easily the best launch + 6 months lineup we've seen.

However, there are NO system defining games to be found, and inevitably, I think these games will be somewhat pale comparisons to what happens later this gen.

(Unlike say, Mario 64, Soul Calibur, & Halo)

The problem with it is, there's no reason the PS3 won't have many of these same games at its own launch. The only universally liked exclusive game that the 360 has right now is Project Gotham. And the next 360-exclusive Microsoft Game Studios game on the release list is months away.

So while yes, it's awesome, it wouldn't take much for PS3 to eclipse it.

I think in a very short time the 360 will get the really great games. People will stop citing multi console games as ‘gems’. Just wait for Oblivion, and and later BC to drop, then we won’t hear anything more about games like GUN.

imo the first 6 months for the snes launch here in europe was really good. SMW, pilotwings, fzero, final fight, mystical ninja etc.

for me snes launch is still the best.

some of the sony fanboy comments are hilarious. yeah fight night for ps2 is just as good as fight night for 360 :lol keep the hope alive..i think you guys might get some more info about the system tomorrow..maybe buxguy might make a cameo appearance

pgr3 not next gen enough. go over teh bridge and pan left and look over the city.

GRAW on pc isnt the same game, its a FPS

condemend coming for the PC, have you seen the pics :lol

oblivion on the pc have fun running AA an HDR :lol

I'll wait for the superior version on PC.

Burnout Revenge: Yes, it's a port.
Nuff said really. A couple more bumpmaps and lighting tricks aren't going to get me to spend $400.

Fight Night 3
same game I can get on PS2, xbox etc. etc. again, I'm not interested in the extra bump maps and lighting tricks.

Project Gotham Racing 3
PGR2 with better graphics, more tracks, etc(more of the same). considering I never liked PGR... meh

Dead or Alive 4
I'll stick with superior fighters like Virtua Fighter 4 and Third Strike

Call of Duty 2
8 players max online and I could care less about single player. PC version FTW (also your implication that a $2000 rig is needed is laughable at best)

Perfect Dark Zero
pure shit. I have no desire to own this title. doesn't even come close to living up to the original. an "average" game at best.

But I think there is something to be said for what the experience is like to play FNR3 for example, on the 360, compared to playing it on the PS2. Is it really the same experience without the graphical realism to make your jaw drop? I don't think it is, so therefore some of those games I listed that are "ports", they become quite a bit more mesmerizing when their graphics are beefed up to great levels and the online play is implemented so flawlessly.

For a game like Burnout Revenge and FNR3, the graphics don't really inspire me to invest yet. It's not because the graphics aren't better or in the case of FNR3 really fucking amazing, though.

Obviously, the experience isn't 1:1 between the versions. But it's way too close enough to buy a new system for it. I'll be able to enjoy it just fine without that, see, and so until a game comes out where I can't say that it doesn't matter for me yet.

That's why... Gears of War defines why I want the 360. Too Human defines why I want a 360. Halo 3, Blue Dragon, Cry On, Mass Effect... these are why I will buy a 360 for. Not these games which will almost all be forgotten once devs really get a handle on next-gen and massacre what came before.

Well, I'm not the only one who thinks it's close. Functionally, the scores it's been getting across both platforms have been extremely close. Now I've only played the demo of the 360 version, but I own the Xbox version and the difference is not far in terms of quality gameplay. AND it only cost me 39.99. Obviously, graphically... it's a different story. But again, not enough to invest.

None of those games can be found on other platforms in their 360 forms, except for Call of Duty 2 and to play that in comparable form you would need a killer rig ($2000+). Though, if you could afford a killer rig, would you really be on a tight budget??

Maybe :p I have a really nice rig, but it didn't come out of my own pocket (since I'm still just about a student, my parents decided to pay for it). Console purchases do unfortunately cost my own money, haha (although a significant other has offered me either a 360 or a trip to madrid next month..I'm leaning toward madrid at the moment simply because most immediately upcoming 360 games I want I will be able to get on my PC).

Mine isn't a typical situation I guess, but a more significant number of people may have sufficiently powerful PCs hanging around, such that spending another $400 on hardware to play something like Oblivion or CoD2 or GRAW might not seem very attractive (even if it might look a little better on the 360).

I'm pretty sure I'll cave over the next 6-12 months, though, as more and more titles appear that I either won't want, or can't get, on PC (or later on a certain other console, I guess).

Why in gods name did you bold all your responses. :lol

You and anyone else would trade all those games for one new Halo/Mario/Zelda/MGS game. So it's hardly anything to go nuts about.

has any other console had this many quality games in the first 6 months?

Within 6 months of launch in Europe the SNES had around 5 gaming classics (plus SMK if you had any sense and imported it from the US :D). I still play those early SNES games to this day, I don't think anything has gotten more play time between myself and friends than SMW, FZero and especially SMK

I agree with the first post. Since NES I've gotten every system at launch (except for the original Xbox) and I haven't been more impressed with the selection of quality titles like I have been with the 360. GRAW is amazing, and Oblivion is right around the corner. Hopefully they can keep the supply of great games coming, as we all know the annual "Summer drought" is apporoaching, I'm interested in seeing what Microsoft has planned to keep gamers glued to their TV.

I'm not interested in the potential for aiding fanboy silliness by comparing to other consoles, but taken of its own accord the 360 lineup to this point has been quite solid.

PDZ is some shit and need not be mentioned in this thread of greatness. Also, why is NBA2K6 not mentioned? What's wrong with people?

I didn't thing PDZ was that bad, it was just ...average. I can understand the disappointment, especially considering the hype, the lengthy development, and Perfect Dark 64, but as someone that was just looking for a FPS to play, I was plesantly surprised to see PDZ wasn't as bad as the forum has made it out to be. It's nothing ground-breakingly great, however, but it is playable, average, and the multiplayer is fun. After years and years of Halo, I'd almost forgotten multiplayer could have bots :lol

I am not excited about some ports and sequels at all. Give me stuff like Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Blue Dragon, Ninety Nine Nights and then we'll talk. =)à

I think the 360 has plenty of potential, and I'm sure I'll own one within a year or so, but those launch window titles just don't impress me that much. I want fresh experiences that I can't get elsewhere, not polished refinements of stuff I've already played. I'd take one Super Mario 64-caliber game over anything in the 360's first 6 months.

Right now, Dead Rising looks like it'll be the first game that will make me want to buy the system.

I've not seriously played any of the games mentioned here so I can't really say I disagree with the thread, but I can say that most of those titles don't really excite me at all.

Also (and again, just going by what I've read of it), I don't think you could really consider GRAW (or any 360 game out right now) a "killer app".

I received the XBOX360 as a gift for Christmas. It was a purchase ONLY made by opportunity as Circuit City *just* received a shipment while he was walking around (the 10 units sold out in 5 minutes).

So the gift was totally up to me, what would I do with this XBOX360? Tell my Dad that I wasn't expecting to buy a next gen console until mid-2006? I really didn't need it... Should I make profit by selling it on eBay?

Well I finally was presented with the shiny box, I couldn't resist. We opened that mofo up and have been playing CoD2, PGR3, and Fight Night 3 non stop. And I love the fact that every one of those games is online. I haven't even tried playing Perfect Dark on solo, I love it online. It's just an awesome experience.

I'm a transplanted Gamecube-only owner, and this XBOX world is oh so nice.

i started laughing as soon as i read the title cause i knew it was going to be a 360 thread

360 hasnt even had the best 6months out of consoles currently on the market! Most of its good games are multiplatform titles by EA, is this anything worth praising?

i really cant believe theres more than one person in this thread that claims PGR3 is not much better than PGR2 graphically. wow. just wow. to the question at hand though nothing IMO within the 360 launch tops sonic adventure. DC had a great launch but SA did it for me. as varied as the 360 launch titles are its serious lacking a traditional action/platformer. which brings me to one more thing. i think the thing lacking from both sony AND ms is the traditional launch mascot. i miss the days of sonic and mario launches.

if not spectacular?

yes is very good but it could had been better

Why the fuck has a guy been banned for saying "One good game! That's impressive." ?...?
What kind of personal judgement are the moderators allowed where a constructive, if not very insightful admittedly, harmless _personal opinion to the point of the thread_ leads to a band? I don't care if he was just banned for a day, that kind of mad power abuse is still a most distasteful display.

Seriously though, if the guy can't take the time to frame out a basis for his opinion, then he should be punished. Making a post like that in his first few weeks of posting here is not a good sign for how he'll carry out debates in the future.

i read the thread title and I thought to myself Oh dear GOD in heaven above he can't seriously be talking about the 360. Sure enough he is and the worst thing about it is he actually believes what he's saying.

Not to totally derail this thread Dreamcast, genesis, snes say hello!

Would you mind providing a list to back up your statements, or are you just gonna say that and run?

Before posting those lists, take a good look at them. Don't let nostalgia get the best of you. :)

This from the guy who puts Burnout Revenge on his list.

Ive been gaming a long time too first system was a colecovision with venture and donkey kong. I own a 360 ( early adopting whore) with COD 2 DOA4 and just recently picked up GRAW. GRAW is the only game that I'm enjoying and I'm looking forward to Oblivion and Dead Rising. Different Strokes for different folks I guess.... I enjoyed Dreamcast, SNES and GENESIS launches respectively alot more than 360.

Uhh,condemned and... graw? Havent played either but everything else is a multiplatform title or just very bad/derivative. Live arcade and xbox live in general are the few things justifying the platform until gears of war.

I considered selling my Xbox + software and putting the money towards a 360. Needless to say, I soon realised that there was much more fun to be had by sticking with the original console & indulging in the DS's flourishing software catalogue.

There's just nothing on the 360 that particularly excites me.

When you make a trollish comment like that with -zero- backup for your opinion, then mods/admins are gonna be tempted to just consider it what it is. It's not too difficult to distinguish between it.

In any event, if you have a problem with the mods or admins or any of the policies you know what to do. E-mail.

GRAW will stand the test of time. It really is an incredible game.

Actually, I just bought FN3 this afternoon.

Im drowning in quality here

Its not just the games though, its XBL, the dashboard, the whole package. Unlike any console i've ever owned

When your lineup consists of halfassed ports, licensed sports games,(I hate sports games), racing games (I need about 1 a year), fpses (way better on PC), some military themed stuff (which bores me to tears), a mediocre Zelda clone, and a mediocre fighter it's hard for me to pay much attention to whether they're quality titles or not.

So for me... it's about the most boring launch lineup ever.

Some months back when people were discussing X360's launch lineup I used GameRankings numbers to show how it tended to be lower in ratings and quantity to the GameCube and Xbox 2001 lineups, though people didn't go for my graphical presentation of that information.

To create a list from the first 6 months specifically would be a bit trickier. To simplify, I'm telling GameRankings to just give me the top five PS2 games of 2000, GCN games of 2001, Xbox games of 2001, and 360 games from launch to date, here's what I get.

Code:
PS2 Xbox GCN X360
--- --- --- ---
91.3 95.8 90.0 90.1
89.5 87.4 89.9 88.7
86.9 86.9 89.7 86.9
85.6 86.6 89.3 86.6
83.4 85.8 88.8 83.9

Of course, personal taste is personal taste, and game reviewers are game reviewers.

EDIT: I should point out, though, that neither GRAW nor Oblivion had enough votes to possibly count towards the top 5 on 360 yet.

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume every launch from now on will have a bunch of people claim it's the best launch ever.
I think that's the goal of marketing, rushing anything that could be finished in 6 months to help make the launch memorable.

Personally I couldn't give less of a fuck about launch choice. As the DS and PSP showed, launches are often followed by droughts that suck ass.
