NHL TV ratings were actually up quite a bit this year, and the sport is gaining in popularity. Not a disaster at all, just not as popular as the NFL, NBA and MLB.

Maybe that was harsh just angry about Canes this year. Compared to the others its a big drop in ratings.

No it's not. We like our forms of entertainment.

we invest the most in sports by a factor of tens of billions of dollars yet we're the fattest most out of shape country

Packers @ 24! Pretty damn good for a city with a population of 100k.

That would be Mexico. The US is #2, thank you very much.

1. Real Madrid (3.44 billion)
2. Barcelona (3.2 billion)
3. Manchester United (2.81 billion)

Forbes article from yesterday: Wall Street Says Manchester United Most Valuable Team In World After Adidas Deal

Shares of Manchester United surged almost 5% yesterday after the soccer team announced its new, $130 million a year kit deal with Adidas , which will begin during the 2015-16 season and see the German sportswear maker replace its U.S. rival, Nike.

Wall Street now affords United an enterprise value of $3.6 billion. Math: market value ($3.05 billion) + long term debt ($613 million) – cash ($57 million). In April, we valued Real Madrid as the world’s most valuable team, worth $3.44 billion, with Barcelona second at $3.22 billion, and United third at $2.81 billion.

Top Kit (uniform) Deals

Team Sponsor Avg. Annual Value

Manchster United Adidas $130 million
Arsenal Puma $51 million
Real Madrid Adidas $41 million
Liverpool Warrior $39 million
Barcelona Nike $38 million
Bayern Munich Adidas $38 million
Manchester United Nike $37 million

Top Shirt Deals

Team Sponsor Avg. Annual Value

Manchester United GM (Chevrolet) $80 million
Barcelona Qatar Airways $45 million
Bayern Munich Deutsche Telekom $40 million
Real Madrid Emirates $39 million
Liverpool Standard Chartered $31 million
Sunderland Invest in Africa $31 million

That's $130 million from their jersey manufacturer and $80 million from their jersey sponsor, so $210 million a year just from shirt deals. For comparison, the 2014 team payroll for the New York Yankees is $209 million... it's 3 1/3 times the projected NBA salary cap for next season ($63 million).

Overall it's a bit ridiculous how much americans invest into sports. look at that list. It's pretty much America, a couple english teams, then Real and Barca, and one canadian, german, and 2 italian teams

The population of the United Kingdom is 20% that of the US. Of course the US is going to have more money to spend on entertainment.

Value of a sports team is based on the amount of profit they make, not how good they are. Granted having a good team does impact revenue(more home playoff gates, increased merch sales etc), but sometimes it has no impact whatsoever.

For those interested, the $1 billion cutoff mark is at #37 with the SF Giants. They're valued right at the $1 billion line.

Baltimore top 20? And ahead of San Francisco?

Fantastic

But there are 2 SF teams above the $1 billion mark!

lol Orioles.

Legit shook that the Utah Jazz aren't in the top 5. Guys, we have Gordon Hayward on our team for the next few years.

Something interesting about the United-Adidas kit deal is that...

The huge sum involved is only £40m less than the Glazer family paid for the club in 2005.

I think it is pretty awesome smaller cities like Green Bay, Denver and Kansas City are on the list. Those huge cities have a huge population advantage.

600 million dollars of the Giants is probably the value of the Stadium and land. You can have the valuation, we'll take being a better team.
