Forest fires raging across British Columbia.

Downtown Vancouver is so smokey now I feel my eyes burn a little. Just not a comfortable feeling ugh.

I think we are super lucky though because today is the last day of the World Cup and the city managed to look beautiful in media till the very end. Immediately after the final match you can start seeing and smelling the effect of the fire smokes.

I was wondering earlier today why it smelt like somebody was having such a long BBQ before the air quality advisory arrived.

The smell of smoke slightly permeates the air here in Maple Ridge. The haze during sunset wasn't too bad, but with the heat lately, I'm really considering going to Costco tomorrow and just get an air conditioner...

It was insane this weekend in Comox/Courtenay. Hell, I came back to Victoria and I was confused because It's been so sunny recently/I thought we were getting rain. Evidently not.

I saw a lot of people buying fans at Canadian Tire on Cambie st... not really sure why they thought pushing smokey air through their apartment would help?

I suggest buying even a small purifier just for the bedroom, or if they are sold out (I bought the last one!) buy a filter than can filter out smog/smoke and taping that to your window with a fan sucking air through that. It's worked a charm in my bedroom though the rest of the flat smells like smoke.

Shit, I know I'm gonna have a terrible night of heat induced insomnia because not only does my fan suck but now I can't just open the window.

Just walked to the store about an hour ago and it was all smoky outside. Guess this is why?

If we would just cut down all the trees then there wouldn't be any more forest fires.

Roommate's brilliant plan to help "reduce" the smell of smokiness in our apartment: Start the oven up to cook frozen pizza. Now my apartment smells like pizza instead, hahaha.

I wonder how long the fire will keep going.

The smog will definitely affect businesses as it might be something that makes people stay inside.
I just hope it's a tad bit less intense or at least chillier at UBC tomorrow since I'll be heading back there for class.

Hopefully it'll be a little less smokey tommorw. But I doubt it since I work and live in Burnaby.

Unfortunately the GFS computer model doesn't show much change over the next two weeks. Very warm air builds far north in western Canada often. Meanwhile a super strong cold front brings well below temps to eastern Canada and actually down to the Gulf Coast states in the U.S. potentially.

Granted, the GFS often sucks after 5 days, but damn if this pattern isn't tough to break it seems.

Antarctica at the South Pole is currently -72C(-97F) with a current windchill of -90C(-130F). Time to visit there to escape summer. :)

Glad to hear they are getting at least some of the fires under control.

Holy crap. How do these fires start, thunderstorms or happy campers?

Last year, 55% of all wildfires in BC were lightning caused, while 45% were human caused. The last ten years the average for all wildfires has been almost 39-40% caused directly by humans (cigarettes, camp fires).

Well that's just great. The sun heats up the house during the day. I don't have A/C and I can't open the windows at night to cool it off because this smoke would suffocate the cats and stink up the house.
So I almost definitely get to "enjoy" an internal house temperature in the low-to-mid 30s tomorrow and cats crying at me because they're suffering from the beginnings of heat stroke. Fucking awesome. Thanks, asshole campers.

Walking to work this morning and you can look directly at the sun, which is bright red

shit looks like something out of Star Wars. Everyone in my office is full of smoke chat

Stage 2 water restrictions in effect. Only watering once a week now for lawns. This is just great. Newly seeded my lawn like a month and half ago, it's the greenest on the block because it's new, and because I utilize the actual sprinkler times whereas no one else on the block gives a shit about their dead ass yellow lawns and I just know someone will make some comments about why my grass is so green despite them all having watched me haul 10 cubic yards of dirt, spread seed and then water 3x a day for weeks to get grass growing. How the hell is there water restrictions as well? Even with prolonged drought, the ground and freshwater won't run out for years. Whatever once a week it is. Just the worst summer ever. Hot and humid as shit.

Really? And where are you in the province? My understanding was that groundwater sources and flow are largely poorly understood in BC, but that ground water withdrawal has been higher than replenishment in the Fraser Valley, Gulf Islands, and Cache Creek areas since '94.

Surface water on the other hand is largely driven by snowmelt and the majority of BC lakes drain relatively quickly. With little snow to melt, I doubt surface water is up to the job for a whole summer. See the Cowichan river for an extreme example.

Fingers crossed for some significant wind in the next week or so to clear some of this haze. Obviously hoping for some rain too. I feel pretty crazy heading up to merrit this weekend, but hopefully the worst of the smoke cleans up by then

I heard the smoke that was the worst on Sunday was caused by a cigarette fire in Burnaby Mountain.

I'd like to go out and find cigarette smokers how they feel about the smoke.

Being a careless douche in a wooded region during a heatwave is exactly what it is.

I don't ask ordinary campers how they feel about smoke the other times that it was someone too lazy to properly put out a fire.

A douche is a douche.

PORT ALBERNI, B.C. – The owner of the iconic, red-and-white Martin Mars water bomber says the British Columbia government has agreed to add the flying tanker to its wildfire-fighting arsenal.

The bomber, stationed in Port Alberni, B.C., was originally built for the U.S. navy for the Second World War, but has spent more than half a century dropping its 27,000-litre load of water on domestic and international forest fires.

Wayne Coulson of the Coulson Group of Companies says the tanker last saw action in B.C. in 2013 and the provincial government didnÂ’t renew the companyÂ’s contract last year.

Coulson says he has been talking to the province for the last 90 days about recalling the aircraft into service but the government didnÂ’t think it needed the help until about a week ago.

He says if the aircraft is needed, the government has agreed to “piggy back” it onto an existing contract where his company already supplies helicopters for firefighting services.

Coulson says the aircraft is effective because the “violent” flow of water from its belly can cover 1.6 hectares and douse some fires in just one drop.

“The reason that we have aircraft is to support the firefighters,” he says. “The reason we have aircraft is to protect people’s property when the firefighters can’t get to the property quick enough.”

Coulson says under a contract signed with the Chinese government, the Hawaii Mars was supposed to be available for service on July 20, but he says he will try to delay the deal until September.

The Hawaii Mars, with its 61-metre wingspan, was one of several aircraft built for a larger fleet known as the Martin Mars.

The aircraft were the largest seaplanes ever put into production. Howard HughesÂ’s prototype Spruce Goose was larger but made just one brief flight.

I hope whoever did it is fined the maximum amount. How many animals displaced, insects and plants killed, money spent fighting the blaze all because he's a piece of shit who needed his nicotine hit in the middle of the wilderness or wherever he was and didn't have the mental fortitude to think, hmmm, we're in a heatwave with no rain at all, my cigarette which is still hot might instantly cause the dry grass to catch fire in an instant.

Received a smattering of rain in Nelson today, not much though and it didn't last.

In a more heartwarming tale, we were paying our bill at a pub when a bunch of the fire fighters started walking in for a beer and everyone started clapping for them. They were all just black with ash and looking exhausted.

Reminds me of the wildfires of 2003 in Kelowna.

Resident Mike Barre dropped the cigarette and failed to put it out properly. By the next day, 3,800 people were forced to evacuate. He was eventually fined $3,000 for negligence.

That's nice to hear. So much respect for those guys/gals.

I was wondering why it was hazy here in Iowa yesterday. Doesn't look as bad this morning, but I can't really tell.

I saw a crazy post on Facebook of a plastic wine glass with its bottom melted. Apparently it was found on a smouldering wooden park bench. The sun's light focused by the plastic glass was heating up the table to the point where it was near burning.

With it as dry as it is, even random stuff like this could cause a serious fire.

It was hazy all weekend in the Twin Cities, MN area, so much so that the sun disappeared behind the haze before it could even set despite no clouds in the sky. Yesterday was even worse to the point you could actually smell smoke in the air. Pretty clear today.

Yeah I was walking my dog and thought I was a block away from a house fire the whole time. Saw in the paper today that it was from the BC fires, haven't seen anything like that since I moved from southern CA.

There's a large forest fire about 18KM away from my house. The streets are filled with smoke and I'm on evacuation notice. Good times.
