Fortnite's popularity is kinda baffling.

I tried out the new PUBG map yesterday, and I seriously don't get why they more worried about making multiple maps when their current maps suck, particularly the second one.
Just playing around just reinforced my beliefs on PUBG. It's much slower, finding guns and loot is much harder, and the game still feels clunky like they're trying their best to emulate how clunky Arma 3/DayZ feels like.

I don't get it. They're both Unreal 4, so why is PUBG so clunky when Fortnite is so smooth, especially when it comes to looting and switching weapons.

I get the objectiveness of this thread, Fortnite is definitely not perfect, there are games right now that probably deserve alot more attention FarCry 5 is amazing and is arguably the best in the series so far if you haven't played it yet. I've personally enjoyed Attack on Titan 2 as a huge fan of the anime and does alot more to correct the short comings of the first game.

Theres something to be said about what Fortnite does really well though and thats is the social aspect and real time strategy/ planning with friends thats required to be successful in Fortnite. I play with a rotating group of guys from work and last night it became super obvious that as we explore if we stay within our squad, making our way to the inner circles as the storm closes in, to eventually setup shop and build towers, traps and give yourself the tactical edge as a team the further you will go in the match.

Its not the rehashed Call of Duty multiplayer experience you'll get, even though I have enjoyed War mode in the recent CoD: WWII. Its not the fire fight you'd find in Battlefield1 spread over big epic maps. Its a new take on multiplayer that Fortnite does so well, the closer you are with your squad, the more fun you'll have because the game is about being social and working together. Its easy to see how part of that will completely evade some people, if you're an adult finding 1-2 friends to play with online can be a challenge with work, kids, ect; let alone finding a consistent squad of 4 players.

I do think this is a step in the right direction of taking multiplayer gaming back to its roots vs the douchbag you hear listening to music in the background and trash talking. Its growing multiplayer up abit and I think its about time.

I don't really see why these battle royale games are so popular in the first place. I've watched some PUBG matches and played Fortnite myself (I like the art direction). Most of the time I run around seeing not a single player and just do some stuff I see fit. Then, after two minutes or so, some one appears and the one with better equip (they farmed/looted in those 'two minutes') usually wins – game ends of either of them and I can leave the server/specatator mode; and start over on a new server. I tried a couple of matches, maybe I need more to get the hang of it, but as of right now, I don't see much fun in it. It seems too random in general so I prefer CoD (the old ones), BF or OW.

I think I give it another chance, though; it's free to play, after all.

In addition to building mechanics, you really need to learn to balance the element of surprise and the shrinking map, and of course trying to ascertain where the rest of an opponent's squad is in squads. It does take a while to get used to it IMO. But is hard to put down when you get into a rhythm.

You need to learn a little bit about the map, and where the loot will spawn. There are a lot of them. You just have to hit all the places with loot, or go to areas with more PVP to get loot.
The good players will go to heavy PVP zones and get a ton of kills meaning they will be the most geared. You might have to do more fighting early on if you want to be geared enough for the end. I usually get at least 3 good kills before I'm at the end if I am to stand a chance.

It's not too hard, but if you want to spend your time on something you already know, then definitely play the games you have been. Try out Fortnite whenever you feel like playing something different.

Thanks for the advice!

I would also suggest, if you really want to learn to play the game, watch some streams. The game is pretty straightforward that watching a few games from a streamer is enough to get what to do.

Oh, and if you get to the point where you're advancing your building skills, use better hotkeys, like q z x c for building.

I don't play Fornite, but reading this thread seems like a bunch of Forza fans complaining that Mario Kart is not realistic and they don't understand why people like it.

Not Forza, un-patched PCars 1 fans.

Learned yesterday that you can surf on guided missiles, that mechanic alone should justify the popularity (even though weapons like that should technicly be very broken)

Hehe thought not guided, I posted such tactic in another Fortnite thread.

Could be used in awesome situations.

I don't know the actual numbers but I don't think people leaving PUBG for Fortnite is too much of a factor. I don't even think the comparison is appropiate since they are completely different. I'm not sure if this may be the reason but I think PUBG is very unforgiving and daunting so fortnite is more appealing for 13-17 year olds.

But let's get to real facts: The game is FUN for a lot of people whether you like it or not, and it's FREE. That's a deadly 2 hit combo for success. Add to that constant updates and improvements. Add to that a brand new also FREE mobile version of the game. What is baffling? The only baffling thing is that OP doesn't think it should be succesful.

So FUN + FREE + UPDATED + MOBILE VERSION = SUCCESS

BTW, I don't even like the game. But facts are facts.

I don't think unforgiving is the right word because if you make a mistake in gunfights in either game, it's just as bad in either games. I guess you could say that PUBG's circle is less forgiving because if you forget about the circle while trying to loot, getting caught out would put you in a terrible position, especially if the circle puts you in a place where you have no cover. Fortnite can build cover, and the circle is much slower. I've seen people win even though they spend most of their time in the storm.

Or maybe you're saying unforgiving in terms of how random PUBG is. In PUBG, I find that it's harder to find guns at the start, so if the building you land in doesn't have gun, you are literally at a huge disadvantage, while in Fortnite, guns are littered everywhere that finding a gun is not a problem.

I thought it was interesting that COD WW2 got a massive overhaul for its division system. I have to think that franchise is really feeling the heat from Fortnite. As much as I love COD, I can't help but think Activision is getting what they deserve

Or they've realized that it was a stupid decision to lock attachments to certain classes and that it was fundamentally the worst system to be introduced since Ghosts took out loadouts for "AI versions of you" type of bullshit

I'm sure. But they might not have been motivated to fix it if it wasn't affecting their bottom line. I'd love to know how much money WWII has made compared to other COD's and what the player count is.

Its also a ugly ass game I can't believe how popular it is, reminds me of battleborn I guess what matters is marketing look at destiny sold really well and star wars battlefront also sold really well to so it must be ads and ads

Except Destiny maintained the outstanding gunplay Bungie was revered by millions of fans for, so the marketing push, while helpful was unlikely the largest single factor contributing to the game's success.

For me Fornite is a kind of cancer in the Gaming Industry that must be erradicated as soon its possible, its not only have a ugly characters and sometimes the environment, its hideous in general, the models are simple, the humor in fornite for me is totally retard, not even have dialogues or any emotion have the characters, all are flat characters.

They all are shooting for no reason, doesnt even have a story or motivation, what a piece of crap is this?

I really hate beetwen Fornite and PUBG, even more than No man´s Sky.... Ok its almost close.

A free game with genuine art direction and constant free updates is "cancer in the gaming industry"?

I find your post cancer and if we voted for most ridiculous comment on Neogaf in 2018 I'd vote yours and we're not even halfway through yet.

Excuse me, but in the post i write that was my opinion, and yes i write it because there are titles that are even better and have a that have been done with a lot of effort from a development team that should be known , that take it for years, and this crap it was development for 2 months, the worst thing is that he does not let people know other sagas or games that are marvelous

Sorry about my double post, and i know that my opinion is controversial, but its a forum and as such there are different opinions and debates, so I just ask that you please be respectful like i show as I respect your opinions.

Does any multiplayer shooter have a story or reason? It's a video game. It's entertainment. The fact that it's wildly popular means we're going to get boatloads of clones.

I don't care for it either, but calling it a cancer is a bit ridiculous. Companies like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision have done far more damage to this hobby than a free to play game with animations could ever dream of.

the motivation is being number 1 and winning like any multiplayer game. however this statement for no story really does put it into perspective that before the narrative boom of the ps1 generation, majority of games were to beat it or get a high score and it seems we are regressing back into this trend because narrative games simply are starting to balloon to much in cost for the majority of publishers. on top of the low risk high profit aspect for these service games.

No it wasnt. The mode itself maybe, but Fortnite had been in development hell for YEARS. And it's not like this game existing suddenly means others dont, and even if it didnt, its not like people would suddenly realize other more niche games exist. Theyre just not in that audience. This game is catered to the people who like survival horde modes, PvP and crafting. Games like minecraft, CoD, PUBG, Gears of War, Overwatch.

You ask for us to be respectful but you started off with saying this type of shit.

Thank you Omeggos (and others).

I'd also like to point out I'm getting a headache trying to understand what Heimdall is even saying.

With the flood of rip offs that are gonna be pumped out... I can see this genre canniblizing itself very quickly.

As long as EPIC follows the Riot Games model, and continues to keep in touch with the community and actively develops the game, it will remain dominate in the battle royale genre. Even PUBG, while super slow slow to adapt, made a smaller map in response to Fortnite's smaller, more action packed map. If I recall correctly Player Unknown was very much against a smaller map for the longest time.

The F2P model is here to stay and any game that uses it properly will succeed (emotes and skins, all you need).

Yea but now you have that palladin's br that puts its own spin on it with the squad based rpg team mechanic with subclasses. There's just gonna be more. There's gonna be the new hot shit every few months it seems.

Hell that palladins br knock off sounds more appealing to me than fortnite since it's ditches that annoying crafting nonsense.

I'm getting flashbacks to the fighting game boom of the 90s

Ok, If I make an offense, which was not my intention in first place and I did not think I would take it that way, I apologize. My point is that for me that kind of games are not to my taste and people should try different things.

Dont take it personal friends please.

I tried that map, and it's just not that fun the way PUBG is set up. Loot is just too random, and firefights aren't fun in close quarters like Fortnite. They need to fundamentally change loot if they want to make it more fair. Fortnite streamlined armor into simple shield items. PUBG tiers armor and backpack, so you have to be lucky to get the best loot. I never had such looting problems in Arma 2 or 3 BR, but there's just something wrong with PUBG looting.

This is why they need to have the "Riot Games" model, listen to people, try out new modes, implement stuff in a weekly/bi-weekly cycle. Constantly update. The smaller map probable needs one armor type, for example.

I think Both Fortnite and PUBG are terrible games but Fortnite is more popular at the moment due to it being the big thing.

I know of at least 3 people that play it despite not really liking it very much, but they play because their friends play.

I wish you could play games like the stock market. I called this when it first came out and my buddy said I was dumb that it would ever take pubgs spot. But here we are and I have nothing to show for it.

3/4 of the people I work with talk about it constantly. And the two with iOS devices play it during lunch.

While it's true they play it because they like playing with each other, they also seem to like the mechanics of the game.

I have never spent this much on a game in 35 years of playing. I must be at about $500 in vbucks thus far and I don't mind dropping the coin at all. At 300 hours in my family is having a blast.

I don't play Fornite, but reading this thread seems like a bunch of Forza fans complaining that Mario Kart is not realistic and they don't understand why people like it.

Mario Kart has so much randomness. And where can I set my -1.5 camber? I'm understeering around Moo Moo Meadows like a madman.

but why? can you explain your addiction to this game? I am curious myself. I tried the game but it wasnt my thing. 20 minute matches are the sweet spot with multiplayer gaming though.

I can't really explain it logically at all. I just find the game play fun, the gun play great, playing duos or squads with friends a blast. My nephew and I played duos this morning for three hours and I had a great time (I have the day off). I just really enjoy it.

01. It is free
02. It runs well on every platform
03. Can play with friends across platforms
04. People move a lot more, higher rate of combat enagement

I have stopped playing vanilla PUBG mode in favor of this. Tequila Sunrise was good, people had to actually move to get into combat, but the main game is just too slow once a few dozen people get themselves annihilated before the first circle closes. If Tilted Towers is indeed getting destroyed, than Fortnite should get even better are evenly dispersed combat engagements. Only problem with that game is challenges that have nothing to do with event modes (sniper and SMG eliminations during an explosives event) and people who go into squads to land in random places to complete challenges.

Top Bottom
