Fortune Editors/10y.o. girl - Dear Microsoft: don't mess up Minecraft!

Minecraft the way it is — educational (parents really like that part)
Really?

Even if there's redstones, each time I read pages explaining the educational benefits of Minecraft, I think that they've search hard to get an educational justification for the game because it helps the game to be seen in a better light.

Granted, there IS some interesting parts for kids, but presenting it as an education tool seem really far-fetched to me.

There's nothing even remotely educational about minecraft. Sure, it helps your kid express creativity, but so does drawing or Legos, so it's hardly unique in that regard.

I hope she likes disappointment. I'm getting ready for microtransactions and DLC. Also, getting effed with DRM.

Nah, that's too consumer friendly. It will become online only to promote a "social" experience where you share your stuff with your friends, which will promote more xboxlive subs. I mean, the won't notice the DRM when they have to connect online to just play in the first place...

Other casualties will include PC, Sony products, andriod platforms, etc.

She and a whole bunch of other kids are about to experience their first MS acquisition. It's sort of brutal to throw them in the cold water like this, but it's a rite of passage and they will be better off for it later on in life.

This will be the first Microsoft acquisition under Satya Nadela. Even if your exaggerations were accurate in the past, there is no evidence to support how any acquisition would occur now

Microsoft is the same company that has kept Halo relevant for over a decade. I would think that they could the same with Minecraft if they take great efforts to truly understand its market.

Microsoft assassinated the halo brand with halo 4. Look at the player counts.

Creativity in a constructive sense (similar to drawing or LEGOs), combined with learning patterns (recipes for items), and more advanced logic (redstone logic circuit blocks).

I simply do not think one can say redstone logic circuits are not "remotely educational".

I feel like if a child is going to play a game, Minecraft is one of the healthier games they could play. It might even inspire some interest in science or engineering.

Seems kind of fake.

I feel a 10 year old wouldn't care/comprehend ownership changing a game like that.

Dunno, if they heard "playstation buys nintendo" but the next Mario game had Mario, they would expect Mario.

whoa it got all serious in this thread about an advertorial

Please point me to the ten year who knows who Microsoft's new CEO is. And then Cc'd Fortune.

Geek parents wrote this letter.

Minecraft is educational in some ways, but really it's more of an exploration/creativity tool. It's Legos for Gen Z.

I see two routes with the Microsoft acquisition:

1. Star Wars-Craft, Indiana Jones-Craft, insert popular boys brand here-Craft.

2. Minecraft 2... that does something better... I think the top one is much more likely.

I'm 99.99% sure this was written by some neckbearded Redditor just for karma on /r/gaming

Yep. Some redditor snuck into an Fortune writer's house and pretended to be their kid in order to write a letter and get it onto the website. That makes perfect sense. You've cracked the case, you can rest now. Go rest and never post anything on the internet ever again, because your job is done.

The hyperbole is strong with those that do not use Redstone circuits.

Also, just because it's not unique in the way it allows you to create things doesn't mean it's not an educational tool. Many schools have, in fact, used Minecraft in their lessons.

So yes, even if there are others out there.

10 years old and she already knows no good ever comes from a Microsoft takeover.

We lose our innocence so young these days ;_;

I think "This is Microsoft, not Electronic Arts" is a valid point, but since it's Microsoft, there's still a good chance that everything gets ruined. There's not as good a chance of ruination as if EA bought Minecraft, though.

This post is freaking beautiful.

I think there's a difference between buying a company, and essentially buying an IP. When you're buying a single game because of its enormous success, it's best to not fuck with your entire $2billion investment by messing it up. They might, but fingers crossed they don't.
They fire key people in their game studios all the time.

Alright, who want's to explain who Bad News Barret is? I'm just assuming he's a wrestler in the WWE.

Exactly that. But his gimmick (as all wrestlers must have), is that for quite a long period of time, all he did was just show up--usually elevated on a podium--wearing a nice suit and give the "WWE Universe" a dressing down on everything from all the problems in wrestling to problems with society in general. Usually he didn't even wrestle--just ruin everyone's day by saying some depressing truth, then leave. His usual opening phrase after appearing would be: "I'm afraid I've got some bad news." Even as a casual watcher, it was quite an amusing gimmick.

And yeah, his usage here (and in SO many other places) is quite apt.

I miss the good old Rare :(
If only i knew it better I would have never touched Banjo Kazooie : N&B.

I feel sorry for this little girl.

I don't see why everyone thinks they're going to change it, it's an extremely successful game as it is.

If they're going to mess anything it'll be Minecraft 2.
