Fosters is Australian for Piss

I'm new to drinking. I like white wine and fruity drinks and I've tried a few different brands of beers. I like shock top and really like blue moon and hefe but for some reason I absolutely despise Fosters. Can someone help me out with beer in general? What do I look for in a beer? How do I predict if I'll like a beer or not?
If you like Shock Top, you don't like beer. Let me get you a Zima.

Personally I haven't tried any beers that didn't taste like beer, and I don't like how beer tastes. And I've been told that I've tried good ones. Oh well.

OP, don't be afraid to try random beers. Go to a good alcohol store in your town where you can pick your own bottles of whatever you want.

For a good intro stout, I'd recommend a Left Hand Milk Stout:

and if you are feeling extra adventurous (and if you happen to like whisky) then grab a couple of these:

I couldn't find Fosters literally anywhere in Australia. At this point I think it's purely an export.

XXXX Gold is my favourite Australian beer. It's light as fuck, but that makes it perfect for those perpetual Queensland summers.

Don't know if this is cheap, fancy or just bad beer (if there is such thing), but this is what I always drink and one of the few that I actually enjoy, a lot.

Warsteiner is really good. But if you're ever in Germany I'd just drink the local stuff.

Update after my first time in a bar.

Had a Rasputin (porter) at the behest of two of my friends and it was horrible. Then I tried some sort of "melon ghost" beer on tap and it was probably the best beer I've ever had. Sour, light fruity hints and an overall refreshing taste.

Had an "adios motherfucker" and that was my first time with hard liquor. Enjoyed it a lot. Tried a shot of Jameson with a ginger ale back, and liked that too. Was a bit jarring but I definitely see the appeal of whiskey. Some girl at the bar recommended a sex on the beach which was very good, but was so sweet it was kind of nauseating after a while. Finished up the night with a crown and coke, which I hated. Would not do that one again.

So the lessons learned:
- Dark beers do not make you cool, if you don't like the taste then you're going to have a bad time. On the other hand, is it normal to try porters with milk?
- If you ask your friends if it's normal to order wine in a bar, you will get laughed at.
- The drinks are stronger in gay bars, confirmed.
- Amf ftw
- Too much sugar in a drink is probably going to make me throw up faster than the alcohol will
- If you're trying to get drunk, just go straight for the shots.

Okay, I feel like I had a pretty diverse set of drinks. What should I try next time?

OP the good news is that your taste buds will change and adapt as you drink more variety in beer. Something you absolutely hate at first you may love down the line as you become acclimated to the taste of beer. Or vice versa.

The weather, your mood, and what your eating will all shift your opinions on how stuff taste. For me Corona with lime and salt is heaven when it's perpetually over 90 degrees. Or really any of the major Mexican beers (it's almost like they know what's good in hot weather!). Winter rolls around and Corona tastes bland and I'm looking for something with more flavor.

Radlers/shandys have their place in hot weather, but they're more soda than beer.

Sounds like you had Anderson Valley's Briny Melon Gose. Gose (goes-uh) is a German style of beer lightly soured wheat beer with salt and coriander. It fell off historically until American craft breweries brought it back in traditional form and also stared throwing fruit into them. AV also has a blood orange variant. Look for berlinerweisse beers as well, they're another revived German style that's a kettle soured beer that can be with or without fruit. Both are low ABV and good in hot weather.

I like most beer styles. Saisons, pales and IPAs are probably favorite, but also love a good Pilsner on a hot day. A well made lager or Pilsner is a thing of beauty.

I don't drink much anymore, but casual drinking is usually just Corona or Crown Lager or Rum/Coke. Back when I was in my teens it was pretty much anything I could get my hands on. The only thing I can no longer drink is Vodka..had a bad experience drinking 600ml mixed into a 1.25L bottle of sprite in under a minute when I was 17..Being near an opened bottle I sometimes start to dry retch over a decade later.

I did go through a phase where I just chose the most amusingly named beers..Like "My wife's bitter."

If it's hanging out with friends who just want to get fucked up, most of the time it's Jager Bombs.

Wow, thank you so much for telling me this. I like this brand a lot. Trying one if their potters and it's great! Way better than the Rasputin I had.

Old Rasputin is a big boozy Russian Imperial
stout. Standard porters are much thinner and lower on the ABV. Very different beers.

Do Australians even drink Foster's? I don't know a single aussie who does except for Eric Bana when he was doing his Poida sketch.

Beer loving Aussie here, with a surname that matches the product. Even I don't go near the stuff.

Carlton Draught all the way!!

Okay, guys, I think the joke's gone on long enough.

Fosters was a joke us Aussies have been playing on Americans for years.

We don't touch the stuff. (hell, I don't even think you can buy it here!)

And most of the "everything trying to kill you" (Most, mind you) thing isn't a thing unless you travel outside the major cities.

Drop Bears though, they're real as fuck. Stupid Mutant Koalas...

Next you'll let slip that Outback Steakhouse isn't very authentic and is basically Cajun food.

Fosters isn't even Australian 😡

I've never seen anyone drink it. I've never even seen it for sale in general, and I frequent the odd bottle-o and bar more than I should.

I saw Coopers Sparkling Ale in a few random pubs while in Europe, they do sell decent aussie beer in Europe, even if its one of our worst flavours by our best mainstream brewery

Beer is piss anyway.

Own it. I gave no illusions that I was drinking piss from 15 to 31 with sporadic gold (better alcoholic drinks) sprinkled in. Makes you a better man. Then you quit entirely and the days of falling in a hedge and getting a lift to your parents at 2am in a police car because the address you told them doesn't exist are over.

If you like Blue Moon, you'll almost certainly like other, better beers in the style.

Don't know what's available in your area, but the german ones are fantastic; Schneiderweiss, Maisels Weiss, Franziskaner, even Erdinger is alright. You might want to avoid the darker styles under you've had a few.

I knew a guy who drank Fosters during the '90s. I believe he's dead now. Outside of that, I can't remember seeing anyone drink it, buy it or seeing on the shelf. I do remember seeing it in a catalogue, so it's obviously still around.

My beer of choice these days.

I used to drink this, but I now prefer 150 lashes. It's getting quite common on tap too.

I never understood why people mention Fosters internationally, it's like drinking cat pee!!! And not Australia's best beer, not by a long way.
