Found a PS3 at a GoodWill for $11

Me, my brother, and our friend went to a GoodWill. I bought a computer table for $10. Not bad. Our friend looked around a bit and noticed a something underneath inside the bin. He pulled a PS3 console. We tested if it turned on at least before buying it for $11 with all the cables and remote. But when we came home my brother tested if anything came on screen but no luck. A few weeks later he did some research and it turns out after reseting the console it went to safe mode. All he needed was a controller and press the power button. And IT WORKS. It's Alive! Oh but there's more.

And all these games: Remember Me, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Directors Cut, RE: 3, 4, 5. Full games. The rest are demos.

Sounds like I should be making more frequent trips to Goodwill.

That's a steal!

Goodwills are generally supposed to have a list of newer electronics to kick up to their online auction site where you pay roughly eBay prices for things.

This Goodwill seemingly fucked up in identifying this or kicking it to the more expensive store, so you lucked out.

Edit: Oh, I didn't read that they must have thought it was broken. That's why. You definitely lucked out.

Generally if we get Xbox 360s and PS3s they are messed up, plus we do bare minimum testing on expensive items. It's not like we have a TV in the back or anything to really test/mess with it so we generally sell them for a modest amount (such as 11 dollars) unless we are sure they are in working order. It's easy to not care either way because customers can just return their electronics within 10 days for store credit

Older consoles generally get priced between 10 and 20 just because they seem to work better but yeah....not surprised you scored one that was fixed relatively easy. Keep in mind, I doubt you'll find working consoles often though because our stock is donation based, and *generally* people won't give away nice modern electronics if they're in working order.

No joke. We thought it was bricked but it was in safe mode. And thanks everyone. Yeah definitely check your local GoodWill and hopefully you'll luck out also!

I have a buddy who shops around Thrift shops and good wills around his area. He scored a $1k projector for $8. Like new. He always had good luck growing up too. Always find the neatest things.

Nice! I actually got one of the old backwards compatible ones for $20 a year back. I ended up selling it for around $100. Just so big and hot and power hungry.

If a PS3 came into a goodwill here they'd slap a $200 price tag on it.

Pretty much this. What goodwill are you going to OP? I wanna go.

Only thing my goodwill/Salvation Army is good for nowadays is finding nice cheap CRTs and some actual decent SNES/GBA/Genesis/PS1/GC games.

very nice goodwill hunting

you never know what you might find there. I found my copy of mgs 1 there for $3 and the disc for vr missions was where the manual was supposed to be.

Yeah, I've checked the Goodwill's/Salvation Army's in my area and the best I've come across is NCAA06 Basketball for the PS2 for the low low price of $2.

Meanwhile little Timmy is crying his heart out at home because grandma decided to go and get rid of the old "VCR unit" that never gets used anymore.

My daughter holds the record in our family for most expensive Goodwill find.

She pointed out a huge folded "box" that had windows and "Barbie" on it. It was marked $12, so I decided to try and open it. It folded out into a 4 story house. It was massive, lol.

I put it back together and carried it to the register to buy it. I didn't know what it was worth until we got home. Darn thing turned out to be a $500 item on Amazon.

99% of the time the stuff at our Goodwills suck.

Nice find considering they'd usually put that up in the glass case with a price higher than gamestops...all I ever find locally is busted PlayStations

If those games are on it then the previous owners PSN where the content was bought is on it and can probably still be accessed if he didn't change password or deactivated the unit from the website. Please be considerate of that, okay?

A friend of mine got a PS3 for $30 at Goodwill, but not officially. He worked there and saw it come in and asked his manager if he could buy it, but the manager said "Those get gathered and shipped off elsewhere to be sold online." but he convinced the manager so he sold it to him as a generic bluray player. I bought it from him after he couldn't get it to take discs.

It is the very first PS3 model released, so full hardware backwards compatiability. But yeah, it won't take discs. I tried everything including replacing the bluray drive to no luck. So I can only fathom that it is one of the ribbion cables. Not only that but the thing gets mega loud and mega hot after about 5 minutes so the thermal paste is probably bad too. I basically said "fuck it" after that.

You are the worst. Literally almost had a meat ball topping come out of my nose after reading your post while eating a slice of pizza.

yeah, people at processing centers typically don't know jack on how to price games, luckily my boss listens to me so all of our sports games are priced at 50 cents :P

We don't get much video game stuff at my store though since it's collected from all of our stores in the area and sent over to just one store for an event twice a year, thus we just get the left overs :/

sometimes we get lucky and they priced decent games at horrible prices thus the left overs contain some decent stuff, but usually it's just sports games and a couple common games such as GTA 3.

As for the OP, congrats on your find. as others have said it's pretty rare for more modern systems to come in in good shape (ps2 and older though isn't that rare) I have personally only seen 2 xbox 360 and 3 wii in the 2 years I have been working at my store. I've never seen a ps3. I've been told though that people have even donated playstation 4s at other stores (didn't personally see it, but I had multiple people confirm that the last video game event had a couple ps4 for $99).

while the video game stuff is light, some other really nice stuff comes in often. I'm always in awe at the number of full Bose surround sound systems (or equivalent quality) come in.
