Fox News mocks Canada's Military

Canadians always say this, but do they have ANY IDEA what would happen in this world if the US didn't have the ability to intervene militarily? It's not always the best thing that we do, but many times it's necessary. Just the presence of our military keeps a lot of whack jobs in check.

Always? Really? Man, do people from Utah always marry off their underage daughters?

Yes, yes, and yes.

Quaint that you can be so glib with someone matching your insulting tone.

How about engaging someone who confronts your glib tone with the full contribution of the Canadian military?

If it wasn't for our contribution in Kandahar, the American mission in regards to Afghanistan would probably be well and truly FUCKED while you guys were wasting time in Iraq.

I never mocked the Canadian military. I was just laughing at how worked up everybody got over a little comedy show.

Sorry if it seemed that way, I didn't mean it like that. I wouldn't dare disrespect military members of my own or another person's country because I know what they fight for. I have family and friends in the military here in the US, and for other countries. I have a huge soft spot for soldiers, actually.

I did mean to ridicule the outrage over a comedy piece, however.

Fine. Fair.

For myself, I'll admit to be sensitive about such pieces. My opinion is that the Daily Show is very good about not being "personal", and not insulting your common everyday soldier. In fact, I don't think I have EVER seen a Daily Show sketch that was insulting to the common soldier.

On the other hand, this Fox News SHIT sketch seemed to base its weak excuse for "comedy" on directly insulting the work of Canadian soldiers and RCMP police officers, and I will make no apologies for expressing my offense at their shit-faced lack of class.

I am certainly drunk tonight to express my outrage, but the only difference that makes is that my opposition to this clip would be a bit more coherent if I were sober.

Canada's withdrawal from Afghanistan would be the first split in a falling house of cards. The international coalition assembled there would gleefully follow suit.

It's not a sketch. It's a comedic roundtable discussion show. And Doug Benson (SUPER HIGH ME) was the one who said the "I didn't even know they were there" slight. Edit: And the only one who was even saying anything of any seriousness was the woman which was pro-Canada stuff (the Palin/Russia thing was obviously a joke) and Hoenig who said standard boring stuff about fanatical Islam.)

Yeah, they'll definitely be insulting Canadians tonight.

I see.

I'm certainly not going to let this go in the name of "good fun" or "comedy"

Last week I attended a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game. In the centre of Toronto, this was an event with twenty thousand fans in attendance. This biggest applause came not for a hockey player.

It came not for a goal, nor for the bell signalling the end of the game, which the Leafs won.

No, the biggest cheer came to salute a Canadian soldier who had gone through three tours in Afghanistan.

No matter what the humour or comedy....I will not tolerate the belittling of the sacrifice of my countrymen who have put themselves through hell in service of my country....in support of the United States.

Comedy or not. Bad taste or not. I will not tolerate their disrespect, by anyone, F-list Fox News comedians included. Those with loved ones in the line of fire will understand.

That twitter message is just as fucking offensive. I don't recall Second City, Jim Carrey or any of the other classic Canadian comedic troupes EVER fucking insulting those Canadians sacrificing their own safety.

In fact, Rick Mercer, as part of the most cutting Canadian comedy program, This Hour has 22 Minutes, has been a supporter of the common Canadian soldier and has NEVER shown them the slightest disrespect.

edit 3: I'm just still reading the twitter page of this FUCKFACE Bill Shultz.

I don't use twitter, so I don't know if I'm getting this right, but first, there's this:

"dude. It was a joke. I thought canadiens had a sense of humor?"

then

"To all canadians that keep emailing me: R u really from the land of SCTV and jim carrey? Lighten the fuck up."

And finally

"(crying) sniff. U got me! So relevant. I was 20 blocks from the towers when it happened, and homeless for the week after. U suk."

Congratul-fucking-lations, you lived in New York City in 2001. Some of us volun-fucking-teered to join the army and get sent to Afghanistan in support of America (A DIFFERENT FUCKING COUNTRY) and fight and DIE in support of that mission. Those people deserve better than to be FUCKING MOCKED by an unfunny, uneducated, Fox News apologist FUCKFACE who doesn't know what it's like to put one's own life at risk.

So you were homeless for a couple for fucking weeks in 2001. Tell me how that compares to someone who was FUCKING KILLED in 2003, or 2004, or 2005, in Operation Enduring Freedom. TELL ME HOW THAT IS EQUIVALENT, you VACUOUS FOX NEWS SPEWING FUCK.

honest to god, the reason why so many canadians- myself included- are offended by this, is because we HAVE a sense of humor

i don't care if this show labels itself as a comedy show, there was not one fucking ounce of comedy in that video. it just simply was not funny.

so how are we supposed to take it? our country has sacrificed a LOT for the mission in afghanistan, and your country pumps out bullshit like this?

i love the daily show. the daily show has made fun of canada and canadians multiple times, and i've laughed pretty much every time. same goes for stuff like when conan or triumph went to canada.

trust me, in general, canadians have no problem laughing at ourselves.

but this wasn't a comedy show, this was more akin to a roast that no one asked for. seriously, anyone who's defending this, i challenge you to read up on what canada has done in afghanistan and why we're there. that's all i'm going to say to you.

I actually thought the "Aren't they just doing what Europe does anyway? Let the US take care of business?" line was hilarious.

Seriously though, it's obviously comedy, and obviously people take it way too seriously. My guess would be that if Stewart or Colbert had said the same thing a whole lot more people would find it funny. Of course, this is Fox, so it can't be good.

Part of the point, apart from it being unfunny, is that Stewart or Colbert WOULDN'T HAVE FUCKING SAID THE SAME THING, YOU INSENSITIVE FUCK.

A TV host on Fox News recently accused the Obama administration of using FEMA to set up concentration camps. You can't take it seriously.

So what part was so offensive? When they poked fun of canada as being a haven for objectors and said "I didn't even know they were there?" When they made fun of mounties? Saying the russians were going to invade?

The only possible point in that is the "I didn't even know they were there?" joke. But it's fine if Stewart mocks McCain's military history right? Or the progress of the war? I think the people on this fox show were bad comedians, that's for sure, but I'm not sure why anyone would get offended over anything they said.

Well, the Canadian military has been handling the toughest province in Afghanistan for the last 8 years - after the US forces pretty much bailed on their own war, fought in response for an attack on America.

8 years of Canadians dying for America.

So yeah, Fox News can fuck right off. If this was in reverse, and anybody said anything about the US military, they'd be crying for blood.

Yeah imagine if someone said the US forces bailed on the war when there are still 30,000 Americans over there. That would be pretty stupid.

I...guess it's intended to be funny, but wow, those guys aren't very good at...being funny.

I mean, the one guy's bit about "This is not a smart culture?" If that's all you can say in your "comedy" bit, it's time to update your resume and look for new work.

Every part of it was offensive. Literally. Pretty nearly every line they said. And not one word of it was funny. I don't see how anyone could take their headline (Canada yet again renews commitment to Afghan mission despite significant human losses and wavering public support, may need some down time for equipment repair and maintenance when done) and think they could pull a joke out of it. Although I imagine Colbert might have been able to pull a joke out, simply through his delivery.

After pulling the bulk of their forces out and sending 300 000 men off to Iraq. Congrats.

I will join the outcry from fellow Canadian GAFFERS. I can be the first to make fun of us Canadians (like lol we suck at Olympics) but that FOX piece is just not funny. What's so funny about soldiers dying in a war that is primarily due to a US initiative to better the lives of Afghanistans ?

This show was a terrible disgrace long before this... Canadians: DONT get offended. Not worth your effort. It's probably the most ignorant and loud program on TV anywhere in the world... The only thing that could compare is Hamas children's programming or maybe whatever they show in North Korea to glorify the regime.... it's a circus of morons.

I remember watching once and they commented on war protectors. Paraphrase: "Hippies smell bad and are annoying." (Um... ok thanks Red Eye. Howabout American Revolutionaries smelled bad. They should have just shut up, am I right?)

Watch this show more often (rather... don't. But you'd understand the depths of how bad it was if you did). The fact that they'd make a vile and offensive comment to a group that isn't American or stridently Right Wing shouldn't be a surprise. The most horrible and loathsome elements of American society had to create a TV show somewhere... this is it.

Dear god, actually watching that clip...

I didn't realize what everyone was complaining about until I saw it. Their delivery was what made it so bad. Laughing at their own terrible jokes was horrific on it's own without the circle jerk over America's military while demeaning other countries. Who would actually watch this show?

I'd bet it wasn't in poor taste, either.

Melting pot vs. mosaic has always been the stupidest thing our teachers taught us in school... I was embarrassed back in GRADE SEVEN when my social studies teacher was comparing our culture to American culture. It might be true to some extent (I don't know, since I haven't spent any more than two weeks or so in the US), but it comes across as us saying we're better and more culturally sensitive than our neighbours. Frankly, I feel that if you come to Canada you can keep your belief system and all that, but if you don't live a Westernized lifestyle then there's no point coming. Canada isn't supposed to be your Italy away from Italy or whatever... does that mean I want Canada to be more of a melting pot?
The "melting pot versus mosaic" thing is always misrepresented. A melting pot means making something homogenous and blending together, whereas a mosaic allows for individual distinctions to stand out but compliment the whole, tied together with the same thread. It's still a similar approach, and while I agree that we are a Western country and we can't expect to cater to another culture entirely, we also don't impose a cultural identity upon people, we allow other cultures and beliefs to stand on their own, to a certain extent, as a way to compliment our own. But in the end, it's just cultural shadows existing from different approaches to how our two countries were formed. The existence of settlers in each province being of very specific origins (British in Ottawa, French in Quebec, primarily Scottish in the Maritimes, British and Ukrainians joining the Natives in Saskatchewan, etc.) made every region's people distinct, but at the same time complimentary, which is what led to this "mosaic" portrayal of our country.

:lol reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld.

Jerry: "He's converting to Judaism for the jokes!"
Rabbi: "And this offends you as a Jew?"
Jerry: "No, it offends me as a comedian."

best post of the thread and i agree 100%.

being a canadian who spent half her time growing up in canada, i've heard schoolyard insults directed at me that are funnier than this tripe.

also, i like the generalizations about canadians in this thread.

inferiority complex? sorry, but i can turn that right around and talk about america's superiority complex. or how all americans are ignorant. or should i get specific and generalize about cities, like was done earlier in the thread? nyc is full of snooty, smelly, unwashed hipsters. everyone in los angeles is a gun-toting drug dealer.

should i continue or have i done a good enough job of demonstrating how dumb you people made yourselves look?

I'd say you've just done a great job at demonstrating how quickly you can make yourself look as dumb in the process. You don't really win over anyone going that route, you know.

But continue, if you must. The carnival of stupid shan't be halted.

I think she was just showing how stupid generalizations are...

Wow, what a non story. Most of us take Stewart and Colbert's "clown nose on clown nose off" justification for what's just a joke and what's serious business at face value. Heaven forbid we afford the same courtesy to a media outfit that holds editorial positions with which we disagree politically.
