Fox News mocks Canada's Military

Chalk up another Canadian rather offended by this tripe.

Perhaps their words were, in fact, intended to humor and entertain, but they were also fuelled by a lot of hatred and ignorance.

Regardless, I'd like to think that world enacts justice in its own ways. None of these so-called comedians will likely ever feature in a program beyond the graveyard slot of a third-rate cable news station, so I take comfort in that. If anything, these losers are at their peak.

wow....I mean its funny when comedians talk about it, or you joke with your friends, because com'on, its Canada, its always funny. But, the was he was saying it, its just really..REALLY sick!! It was just cruel. At first i was like "meh, it cant be that bad", but holy fuck, its not even the least bit funny or intelligent. I could have wiped my ass and gotten a better script for the guy to read.

Hahaha... fucking assholes. We have a rather small army with limited funding and we're still kicking it around Afghanistan to prevent the region from being used as a terrorist base of operations. All whilst the previous US administration abandoned it for Iraq, and the people that voted them in, laugh because our personnel is stretched just as the US became in Iraq.

It's a good thing we are there to actually do things, than ingratiate ourselves with Fox garbage.

The following extends to our contributions beyond just military operations against the Taliban and community policing.

What have we done for Afghans?

* Canada has helped over 200,000 Afghans, 75 % of them women, to obtain small loans to start up their own micro-businesses or purchase tools or farm animals in order to meet their families' needs.

* Thanks to a project that I announced last month, up to 4000 community schools will be renovated, extracurricular activities will be created and 4000 teachers will be trained. This project, whose essential goal is to educate girls, has a budget of $14.5 million.

* I also announced another project, with a $5-million budget, designed to integrate women into the labour market by growing fruits and vegetables. This project will allow some 1500 Afghan women to improve their family's diet while setting up their own small business and providing a regular income.

* More than 10,000 community councils have been elected across the country. These councils have implemented some 5,000 projects with Canadian support. These have included health centres, water wells, and schools, among other things.

* Afghanistan has adopted a new constitution and has held presidential and parliamentary elections. Many women have been elected; one quarter of the parliamentarians are women, which is very encouraging.

* More than five million children are going to school, and a third of these are girls.

* More than 65,000 landmines have been cleared and destroyed in four years.

Our action plan for the coming months promises further progress
:

* We have begun vaccinating 7 million children against polio;

* We have invested in vocational training for thousands of women, primarily widows and heads of families, to offer them better employment opportunities;

* We are working to reinforce the institutions of the Afghan government so that it can provide public health and education services.

And here is what the government of Canada intends to do in Kandahar province.

* We will provide rations for 12,000 families

* We will vaccinate over 360,000 children against polio

* We will develop medical services in villages

* We will begin a literacy program for 3500 women

* We will support implementation of the projects chosen by the twelve newly elected community development councils in Kandahar

After pulling the bulk of their forces out and sending 300 000 men off to Iraq. Congrats.
The US has always had ~30k troops in Afghanistan. When did this withdrawal supposedly happen?

Look, I actually like the show Red Eye, it is a comedy show based pretty much on depreciating humor where they make fun of every one.

I do question however it's right to exist on Fox News and not FX or Fox proper. Since it's home is on Fox News I think it's fair to take offense to them.

Not funny in the least. If this is suppose to be humor it fails pretty badly. Too bad this guy was not in one of the towers rather than a few blocks away, fucking douche bag.

Just because you say something to be funny doesn't mean you don't believe it.

It wasn't really a joke.

Fox News just shot itself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Canadian culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you offend Canadians, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the Canadian public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to watch Fox News, nor will they give Fox Entertainment Group permission to broadcast in Canada. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Fox has alienated an entire market with this move.

Bill Shulz, publicly apologize and go help the troops in Afghanistan or you can kiss your job goodbye.

Is this topic too serious to joke about? I've expressed my feelings on the issue earlier in the thread.

So, somehow, this is now the top news story for pretty much all Local Cable news. Good job, Fox News. You've gotten your ratings spike.

Wow. What you should all be offended at was the labeling of this as 'humor'.

Fox's attempt at Comedy (i.e. their version of the 'Daily Show') can't even get that close to funny. Not surprising that it would look like a college public access show in comparison to the big boys.

Also not surprising that their show would try to base a lot of it's 'humor' on:
1. Ridiculing another part of the world
and
2. Vague references to homosexuality (hurr hurr his name is Leslie)

:lol

As if some talking-head has the authority to mock anyone in any military. Real brave in the studio.

And of Canada's military:

(See the Canadian flag on the shoulder of the guy on the right.)

Well, the host issued an apology today, sort of.

Globe and Mail said:
He mocked our military and our Mounties, and incited outrage among our highest-ranking politicians, but Greg Gutfeld couldn't muster the guts on Monday to tell us himself that he's sorry.

Sure, he apologized in a roundabout way: He issued a rueful statement through Fox News's corporate channels, saying “It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize.”

But the late-night talk show host and blogger, who recently ridiculed Canada's military effort in Afghanistan, opted not to respond to a Globe and Mail e-mail Monday offering him an opportunity to personally explain himself
(and engage in a short game of Canadian trivia).

Instead, he forwarded the message to a Fox publicist, who responded. “He's not doing interviews,” she said, noting that the offending segment of Mr. Gutfeld's chat show was broadcast March 17, one week ago.

...

In an online posting on the social networking website Twitter, a member with the name @GregGutfeld also posted comments on the uproar. “My apologies to the Canadian military. They probably could at least beat the Belgians.”

So people know what you're talking about:

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/tv/story/2009/03/23/redeye-soldiers-mocking.html

The host of an over-the-top, late-night Fox network show has apologized for disrespecting the Canadian military with a recent segment on his intentionally inflammatory program.

"The March 17th episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada's plan for a 'synchronized break,' which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts," host Greg Gutfeld said in a statement issued Monday.

"However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize."

In an interview with the CBC on Monday, Defence Minister Peter MacKay said he accepted the apology — pointing out it came only after his department contacted Fox demanding one earlier in the day.

MacKay called the comments "totally, totally inappropriate, ridiculous [and] demeaning."

The vast majority of Americans, from President Barack Obama on down, "have nothing but respect and admiration for the Canadian forces and their families," he said.

"I don't think we should dignify this with more commentary other than to say it's highly regrettable," he added.

"The apology at least represents some recognition of the insensitivity — and we all move on."

'Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner," MacKay added.

Gutfeld, a former Maxim and Stuff magazine editor, hosts the cultural commentary show, which is broadcast on Fox weekdays at 3 a.m. ET.

He moderates a round table of panellists who deliver off-the-cuff musings and crack jokes about a wide range of topics from the worlds of news, entertainment and sports. Commentators have included comedians, Fox News anchors, actors and Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis.

In a five-minute segment broadcast March 17, Gutfeld mocked the Canadian Forces, noting Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie's recent comment that the military may need a year to recover after Canada's mission in Afghanistan ends in 2011.

"Meaning, the Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants," Gutfeld said.

"I didn't even know they were in the war," panellist and comedian Doug Benson added. "I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight. Go chill in Canada."

The panellists continued by joking about soldiers needing a break for "manicures and pedicures," how Canada should be invaded and poked fun at the RCMP.

Canadian soldiers, who have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001, have spent the last four years in the country's most violent regions. On Friday, military officials announced that four more Canadian soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded in two separate roadside explosions outside Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan.

Canadians express outrage

Over the past few days, the Red Eye segment has sparked outrage from a range of Canadians, including thousands of comments on YouTube and Facebook.

"Our soldiers are dying for them and they have the audacity and the ignorance Â… to say something like that, it is insulting. It's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard," Sam Warren told CBC News after watching the segment.

The segment also drew criticism from Conservative author, columnist and commentator David Frum.

"The clip in question is a sequence of goofs about the feebleness, uselessness and absurdity of the Canadian armed forces. Why would I call that dumb? Here's why," Frum wrote on his New Majority.com blog last week, before listing the Canadian soldiers, aid workers and a diplomat who have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.

"Sorry I disrespected your show, Red Eye fans, but you disrespected the dead," Frum added.

On Sunday, a post attributed to Gutfeld appeared on Twitter, which offered an apology of sorts.

"My apologies to the Canadian military, they probably could at least beat the Belgians," the posting read.

But Fox News told CBC News on Monday that Gutfeld does not have a Twitter account and did not write the post.

So first off, can we all call bullshit on the canned apology?

Second, can we all call bullshit on Peter MacKay trying to pretend that the average American respects/gives a shit about Canada in ANY way?

And lastly... 5 to 1 odds that the Twitter post is real?

Nope. The Andy Levy and Bill Schulz accounts are real, the Greg Gutfeld one is not. They've said this over and over well before this non-scandal even started.
Wow, what a non story. Most of us take Stewart and Colbert's "clown nose on clown nose off" justification for what's just a joke and what's serious business at face value. Heaven forbid we afford the same courtesy to a media outfit that holds editorial positions with which we disagree politically.
I'm sure there will be a very unacceptable apology on tonight.

Open threads intrigued.
Sees that it was RedEye.
Laughs at posters who rage about a 3am unfunny comedy show and the nobodies on it with a viewership of like 12

This thread is about phony and misappropriated outrage used as an excuse for typical U.S. bashing. Check your facts at the door.

This is the guy who refused to apologize until Fox News forced him to due to pressure from the fucking Canadian government... what's to say he's not above lying about a fucking Twitter account?

As a Canadian I don't care. Its Fox news, no one important takes them seriously anyways. Besides given how many Canadians speak about Americans in general we should stfu.

Why would they spend the last three months informing everyone it's not his Twitter account, well before this, while advertising the Twitters of everyone else that appeared on the show?

I can speak only for myself here, but I don't mock the US military when they're bringing home war dead.

I also try to get my facts straight before claiming something is intended to be "satirical".

Yah I think people need to drop this. This feels as important as a poorly done youtube video - but it is being blown up like... well... a stupid story on fox news. They're not funny, they know they're not funny now more than ever, and everyone around them knows they're not funny. Trust me, finding out you are not funny hurts plenty.

Douglas Steven Benson (born May 7, 1964) is an American comedian who has appeared on VH1 Presents, Best Week Ever, and most recently as a contestant on Last Comic Standing.

Benson graduated from a community college in San Diego, California, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. In order to pay for his education, Benson worked part-time at a coffee shop in San Diego, often performing fellatio on male patrons for extra tips. This continued following his move to Los Angeles, and was a main factor in his success later in his career, with Greg Gutfield suggesting that Benson had the "most incredible technique I've ever felt, he swallows like a true champ".

While working as a stand-in and extra in movies and TV, he did his first stand-up gig after he and two other friends dared each other to try it. One of them didn't show up, and the other had signed up too late. Benson claimed that "I went on anyway and did my three minutes of whatever I could come with and people actually laughed".[1] At the age of 22, Benson became a stand-up comedian.

Benson was part of the writing team that created (and performed in) The Marijuana-Logues. He was also named Stoner of the Year for 2006 by High Times Magazine. Benson also made his own faux-documentary Super High Me, a mislabeled stand-up compilation made while Benson was high, which was released on DVD on June 10, 2008.

Benson also appears on the comedy compilation CD Comedy Death-Ray. Benson released his first full-length solo comedy album, "Doug Benson: Professional Humoredian", on July 15th, 2008.

Anti-Canadian remarks
On March 17, 2009, Benson made controversial remarks about Canada's armed forces in Afghanistan. Greg Gutfeld, the host of Red Eye (the Fox News program that featured Benson's remarks), also suggested that the United States should invade Canada. These comments went largely unnoticed until a recording of the five minute clip was circulated on the Internet.[2] The Government of Canada has demanded an apology from FOX News as well as the panelists for "...despicable, hurtful and ignorant comments."[3] Benson has yet to apologize for his remarks.

Due to his comments, the Edmonton, Alberta show to be held at West Edmonton Mall's The Comic Strip has been canceled. "For the safety and security of The Comic Strip's patrons and staff, Doug Benson's shows have subsequently been canceled," reads a press release from The Comic Strip. One of Canada's largest Army bases in located in Edmonton and is home to a large majority of Canada's front line Combat troops. Edmontonians have expressed disappointment at the cancellation, with one ticket-holder going on record as saying "we really were looking forward to lodging our collective boots up his arse". Another man sighed in dismay, noting that he'd spent "damn good money on these boots to curb-stomp that insufferable ass-hat. And 'Super High Me' was a sh-tty movie, too."

The timing of this was really bad as four more soldiers were killed about the same time as all this garbage.

Canada does not forget. Canadians are dying for the US's bullshit war on terror.

You guys couldn't tell this was a comedy show? Might not be funny but why would take this seriously.

I honestly can't tell because this is not the first time FOX News has done this. FOX News has done similar shit on actual news programs when they let people like Anne Coulter speak on their news shows. FOX News has a documented history of bashing Canadians unjustly and the fact that this is suppose to be a comedy show means little when the actual news programs on this network spew the same shit.

that's great and all, but i think the combination of the youtube vid and this thread shed more light on this tripe piece of trash then the 3am airing did.

Unless Canada is some spineless parasite of a nation that is forced to do everything the US does, then, no, Canadians are not "dying for the US's bullshit war on terror." The Canadian military is there because they want to be a part of it. Don't act like they were dragged into it. That would be devaluing the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers.
