Franchises that did not significantly change in this generation.

Most of Namco's core franchises:

Tekken
Ace Combat (up to Assault Horizon)
Tales of
Katamari
Soul

I'm actually really impressed that Namco has been able to keep all of those franchises relatively the same for three console generations. I don't think you can say that for any other Japanese publisher save Nintendo.

But Dragon Quest got significantly worse this generation.

And even if you don't think so, DQ9 and DQ10 are dramatic, dramatic departures from other entries in the series. So it's still not eligible.

DQ9 feels just like a regular DQ title, but with completely optional stuff like the postgame dungeons and multiplayer.

you create your own party from scratch like in DQ3
also like in DQ3, you can change classes at a certain place
It contains the character level up customization, polygonal characters, and alchemy pot from 8
it contains nonrandom battles, like in dqm joker. also, dragon quest VIII contained a few nonrandom battles
it contains the viginettes, silly puns, turn based combat, slimes, drackies, dungeon exploring, and boss battling like the older titles.

the only major difference I can tell is that everything you wear outside of accessories will show up on your character.

i understand why you would be upset by DQX. I am too. I just don't understand how DQ9 is so drastically different.

I've gone into this many times before. I wrote a really long post on it one time in particular... but I can't remember which thread it was in. The core design of DQ9 is entirely different. Everything is designed with extended play in mind, which outcasts it from a game series that is very well-known for its extremely tight balance and progression. The quests are all busywork with many variables, often relying on rare drops or other time consuming things. This is true even for things directly related to core progression, like unlocking classes. Randomized chests and random dungeons further illustrate the divergence in philosophy. The alchemy system was changed to go along with this philosophy, too. They throw many, many recipes at you that use rare materials and drops from enemies, once again creating a timesink for the player. Honestly, I could go on and on about this, and it surprises me so much when people say that DQ9 is just like the other games. DQ9 is the stepping stone between DQ8 and DQ10.

Mario is still Mario

That is not a bad thing either. It's kinda bad for a new generation(at least for NSMB in my eyes) though...

Mario at the beginning of this generation was GBA ports and Mario Sunshine.

Mario at the end of this generation was 2 Mario Galaxy games (which represented a shift in design away from the 64/Sunshine mold) and the revival of 2D Mario after a decade of absence.

The franchise is definitely in a very different area both in design and expectations than it was before this generation began.

Mario Kart is a good one. The only real significant addition is online. I don't think Bikes count for much and Coins were more of a returning feature.

Nah, the actual driving in MKWii and MK7 is MILES ahead of any MK before. Just eliminating snaking they improved it incredibly.

Wow, people actually said Zelda didn't have significant changes? Yikes.

I do agree with New Super Mario Bros despite the awesomeness of the penguin suit.

you're the DQ expert, so i'll just concede that you're probably right.

i never bothered with alchemy, spending hours trying to get random drops, most of the sidequests, etc. I guess that's why it still felt like a regular ol DQ game for me.

I sometimes wonder if X's birth was directly as a result of the rejection of IX's initial reveal, or if IX's design was intended from the beginning to try to make the acceptance of X more palatable. It can't be pure coicidence that both titles emerged at the same time and essentially cut with the same fundamental design changes.

I think almost every big first party game fits this list (or all)

Mario Kart
Mario overall
Super Smash Brothers
Pokemon
Halo
God of War
Gran Turismo
Ratchet
etc

Heh anyone who's competitive in MK, Super Smash and Pokemon will disagree with you ;)

I guess this is a beauty of those kind of games that are simple on the surface...

I remember reading an interview with Horii back in the days when people still thought DQ7 was coming out for the N64, hinting that he wanted to make an online DQ game (this was of course back in the days when Everquest and Ultima Online were really the only MMOs out there). Not surprised he finally did it, but it's a shame it was in a main series game, especially after initial reports of DQ10 said it would be more reminiscent of DQ8 than 9.

Franchises that haven't changed much:
-Tony Hawk
-Guitar Hero
-Twisted Metal
-COD (got its start on Xbox/PC iirc)
