Franchises that need retiring or rebooting

Devil May Cry needs a reboot for sure, or at least a serious overhaul. I wouldn't call DMC4 a misstep, but to rival much less surpass Bayonetta, DMC5 needs to be a much tighter package. For a start, Capcom should aim to combine DMC1's design aesthetic with DMC3's gameplay.

Reach is the closest thing to a Halo reboot we're likely to see for some time. For their final game in that universe, Bungie dumped out their whole trunk of Halo stuff and repacked it floor to lid with nothing but the best material. Every old thing been renovated and polished. Every new thing has a well-defined function that complements the whole. Short of a direct remake of Halo CE, I'm not sure what more you could ask for.

For a while I've been trying to find a decent excuse NOT to buy PS3 and play MGS4 and I guess this thread was it for me.

Cool pics btw.

God NO!!!!! The FMV games (along with that whole fad) sucked. I want to play as my created character not some has beens & ex-porn stars acting horribly against shoddy green screen.

EA holds the rights to everything Origin including Origin itself if it still existed.

edit: sorry, should clarify. Yes to the reboot of WC. No to live action.
I didn't mention fmv. They could be used for cg. It would be nice to have a connection to the previous games

Seems like a pretty weird choice tbh, any reasons for why you think a series that hasn't even had it's third release needs to be retired(or rebooted)?

Don't get me wrong; I love Gears for what it does best: visceral, close quarters, cover-based combat.

But for me personally, anything the first two games have done outside of that (the sections where you're controlling a Reaver or tank, specifically) have been fairly underwhelming. They didn't control very well and despite the fact that they gave me a real sense of empowerment, I was eager to get back on foot after two minutes or so because blasting away waves of Locust that presented no challenge whatsoever became tiresome.

Though those sections could definitely be improved upon to enhance the overall experience, I think that the major determining factor of whether or not the series will remain relevant after the third installment is if its most significant gameplay mechanic (the cover-based combat) sees a big change. Sure, Epic could thrown in a few more enemy types for the sake of variety, but at the end of the day, I'm still just crouching behind an immovable object and waiting for the right moment to pop out and unload a few rounds into the head of an enemy.

This one got me. :lol

Wow, I totally forgot about MGS. Reboot it with some new character (NOT RAIDEN) in the same universe or end it and let Kojima do something else before he dies.

If you had told me years ago, after playing MGS1 for the first time, that I would someday be sick of the series and wishing for it to just go away... man, I probably would have cried.

It's kind of surprising that there's only been five entries that matter in twelve years and I'm feeling significant franchise fatigue. Rising better fix every issue with the series.

Zelda, OoT was awesome, MM had a great atmosphere.
After that it's all been the same with other graphical engines.

As a huge Zelda fan, I sort of agree with this :/

WW is a great game but it played very similarly to OoT and MM. Twilight Princess is a good game too, but it also feels too similar to the games that came before it. I really want Nintendo to knock it out of the park with Skyward Sword and wow everybody with an inventive Zelda game on the level of SMG.

I'm sure it's been said already but Unreal and Unreal Tournament need a re-boot.
After Gears 3 Epic should take a break from that franchise and make a new Unreal.

Don't call it Unreal 3, just Unreal (re-boot it's story), and the game should also include MP in the form of a back to basics Unreal Tournament game that draws inspiration from the original UT.

They also need to make a Jazz Jackrabbit XBLA game!!!

No.

Because LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT just came out, and it's not only the best Tomb Raider game ever made, it's also one of the top ten games this entire generation.

They already went and retooled the shit out of Tomb Raider.

It's no longer Tomb Raider its more like... Diablo: Lara Croft. (do not like), "reboot" need a reboot.

Me too. I actually started with TP, but after a few temples I returned to OoT because TP made me miss that game :D

Fucking knew this would be about Metroid.
Of course it's about Metroid, it's the obvious answer. And yes, it needs a reboot, Other M took the series in the exact wrong direction.

I kinda wished Skyward Sword would be a reboot too, as little as we know about it, it already looks a lot like the Zelda we've grown a bit too accustomed to. A reboot in the style of the original Zelda would have been more welcome imo.

I've already learned to just accept that long-running franchises become stale after so many years and almost never truly recover. That's when you need to start looking for new and similar games and just accept that you're favorite series will never be what you'd want it to be anymore.

You had your chance with the last two games that were already reboots.

Guardian of light is the first TR in a while that is actually fun to play and controls really, really well. It's a different design, but it is by far the better reboot of the last three attempts.

GoL is the way reboots should be done, basically.

If the recent news is true, you can knock this one off the list.

Yeah, I'm really hoping that Black and White will be the much desired "next step". I love Pokemon games but they have become a little stale.

Madden needs to die.

Opposite for me. No reason to play Ocarina of Time when you got Twilight Princess that is better in every way.

Rainbow Six, back to the way it used to be. Rebooting it could once again make it a great series, with SWAT out of the way (sadface) thereÂ’s not much competition out there either.

And who knows, maybe a couple of the plebs that jumped in with Vegas/Lockdown would enjoy it too!

Love the art.

The Resident Evil series needs to go back to survival horror. RE4 was a good game, but it was not a Resident Evil game. RE5 is not a good game, but at least it gave some very good background information on the story. The old games were better, but it is true that they ran their course. RE0 showed that to me. When I played that game, I knew the series had to change. But it needed to stay in the same genre ffs!

Resident Evil does not have to be about zombies. It could be, but it does not have to be. If they are to use zombies, the crimson heads would be the best fit at this point. What's most important is that it be survival horror and not action. And please no more enemies riding motorcycles. A small part of me died when I played that section of RE5. The enemies don't need to be zombies, but they cannot be that human.

Resident Evil should be about scares, moody music, puzzles, and reading files that give you the creeps. It should not a bad version of Gears of War.

Something MUST be done about Final Fantasy.

It needs to return to its roots - maybe I'm giving the fanbase too much credit when I say this, but I don't think the series can survive another FFXIII.

hikari4senshibox.jpg

S-E already tried that and it supposedly was pretty mediocre.

Zelda's due for a gameplay reboot too... not sure Skyward Sword will be enough on that front.

I'm confused. Is this thread more about the story elements? If so most of these posts makeno sense.

Anyway while I don't care about it's story, Dead or Alive could use a reboot. New characters, story background, and visual design could breath new life into the series and make an excuse for a departure from Itagaki's games.

And FF is fine. This bitching about going back to it's roots is annoying. It's just you older fans wanting it to be like what you played back in your day.

Hate on Metal Gear because of 4, then Peace Walker came out and it was awesome. They put the main Metal Gear story to bed, that's what is important. They can keep the franchise going doing other stories now.

Retire them or reboot them
  • Sonic the hedgehog
  • Shining Force
  • Phantasy Star
  • NiGHTS
  • Golden Ax

...hell this list could go on and on, but you see where I'm going.

Rachet & Clank
I love this series so much, Up Your Arsenal easily placing in my top five games of all time, but it's time to let it go.

Final Fantasy
I loved XII so much, it was exactly where the series needed to go...then XIII happened. I think I'm done with the series.

Zelda
TP was dreadfully boring. They need a completely revamped formula.

Halo
The single player aspect needs a completely new perspective. I'm kind of glad Bungie is done with it.

God of War
I'm very curious to see where they take the franchise. I kind of hope it doesn't involve Kratos.

Devil May Cry
Just kill it.

1. Final Fantasy. Just get rid of it. The last game was beyond embarrassing and SE has no other capable staff left to make things right again.

2. Kingdom Hearts. The series needs to go back to its roots, otherwise each game will become more and more niche. More FF/Disney crossover. A lot less original Nomura trash.

Final Fantasy needs massive reconsidering.

Not really, all they need is settings like Final Fantasy Versus.

Lots of people like it when Final Fantasy goes contemporary (FF7 and FF8).

More than sound artistic direction, they need a team that can create refined adult characters who don't talk like idiots. It doesn't have to be high philosophy. Versus is not going to solve this problem. It will only accentuate it, just like any other Nomura game.

Okay, so they need a better scriptwriter and settings that can excite people more.

That isn't hard.....is it?

This x1,000,000,000. Haven't genuinely enjoyed an entry in the series since 8 came out.

How can you say that you agree that Final Fantasy should go back to its roots but not like FF9, the ultimate example of retro homage that the franchise has ever done?

I feel saturated with Mario and Zelda since some years ago, I feel I played the same game with the same characters, elements etc too much times since the 8 bit. I didn't even played Phantom Hourglass even I bought it.

Mario keeps changing / innovating in some ways, but there are a lot of Mario games released every year. I prefered the old 8bit/16bit fashion where they only released some Mario games, and every launch was a big event.

I think they need to release less games and adding some stuff like the 4P they added in NSMB Wii. I think it would be cool to rip more ideas like that from games like LBP: to add on-line multiplayer, time attack version of the levels, some community integration (like a level editor) etc

Resident Evil has to go back to its Survival Horror roots, focusing more in horror than in action. With real zombies, more scary and more inspired in horror / gore / zombie movies than in current hollywood action blockbusters. To show a fuckton of zombies in screen, and to fix the controls.

DMC needs a reboot, and to learn from other games like God of War, Ninja Gaiden and specially Bayonetta.

I think it's a good time to see a Syphon Filter comeback in PS3, learning from Uncharted series, MGS series and Splinter Cell Conviction. Using Move for 1:1 movement of spy camera under doors or a lantern would be just awesome.

Resistance needs a reboot big. Ratchet & Clank and Jack & Dexter need to die.

MGS is almost perfect, it just needs trophies and to simplify the controls (like they did in Peace Walker but using dual analog). And haters would stop complaining with a 360 port.

Classic sport IPs (FIFA, PES, NBA Live, Madden etc) need to know how to use 3D and motion controls to reboot their franchises without dumbing down the game casualizing it too much (Virtua Tennis 4 looks good it that way, the series needed a change like that).

for everyone wanting Final Fantasy to be the magical character/story/gameplay combination you remember it being...

the SMT Persona series is all aces ::bailout::

Final Fantasy's roots range from mediocre messes to unplayable messes, though.

Is the Tony Hawk series dead yet? Because it should be.

Best pick so far imo. THPS3 was amazing... and now, god, dont even mention Ride.

Still think it could be rebooted well - just need to goes back to its arcade roots with the different challenges on different stages (collect SKATE etc etc). I would buy it.

what? Twilight Princess is essentially a watered down remake of Ocarina of time but instead of the ocarina you play as a howling wolf for sections of the game.

Metal Gear doesn't need a reboot or revamp but KojiPro needs to move onto something new. We've gotten four installments in the past six years, not counting stuff like Twin Snakes or Subsistence or the Acid games.

It is one of my favorite franchises but I don't really need another two games in the near future, especially if one of them is yet another remake.
