Free Radical new game HAZE looks amazing

The Haze booth at E3 was a ****ing circus. Completely "public" yet behind closed doors, there were people lining up to get a peek at what all of the fuss was about. When you finally got in, you were treated to a Power Point presentation (I shit you not, although it was a presentation based on "in-game world" corporate stats) and some gameplay footage, all set to the sounds of a live, beefy marine dude yelling at you about joining some super army.

Visually the game looked nice enough, with some cool environments, but I can't even recall anything about the gameplay that piqued my interest. I do like me some TimeSplitters and I trust Free Radical enough to assume that it will be a solid, if not okay, title.

Another first person shooter? Yeah, I know it's Free Radical, but still...

Meh, I don't mind another game in crowded genre as long as the game in question has an interesting premise and a realistic chance of delivering a genuinely special game experience.

I'm getting so sick of jungles.

I love jungles. I love everything about them.
I love how green they are. I love the wildlife that inhabits them.
I love their jungleness.
I love books about them. I love movies about them. I love games that feature them.
I guess you could say, I'm a jungle kinda guy.

My point being, this game looks totally rad. Like, totally Free Rad. Like Free Radical Design.

Basically, everyone needs to stop complaining about stupid things.
I'm sick of buildings being in games! I'm sick of there being skies and clouds in games! I'm sick of controlling characters in games!

HAZE looks great.
Totally digging that rad jungle element.

You don't want another FPS game? Then stop buying them!

Seriously, FPS is the most crowded genre today, pretty much because it's so popular.

In perfect world each genre would be represented by one perfect massive multiplayer game in which everyone would have his own role to take...... actually there is such game... I forgot the title...

The jungle environment is one game environment that still feels fairly "fresh" to me, and the wealth of different types of foliage (and varying degrees of horizontal and vertical density) and wildlife makes it a pretty damned versatile. Granted that the idea has been used in games for a long time, but the jungle/tropical environment in Far Cry was probably the first one that I've encounted that actually felt somewhat realistic. And that one was still very incomplete in that it lacked any deep, dense jungle environments, nor did it have all that much going for it in regards to fauna.

This game looks fantastic, of course, but I'm a little concerned about just how many of these games we're getting, lately:

Mass effect
Gears of War
Halo 3
Resistance
Haze
Huxley
And countless others

I know they're all different, but they appear VERY similar in theme and purpose. I'm excited the envelope is being pushed and all, but man...

Eh, how exactly does the theme of HAZE appear similar to any of those games? I can spot a few games there that perhaps look similar to other games on that list, but HAZE seems to stand out pretty nicely, thematically and stylistically.

nope 360 and PS3 both share the fun
"Wii is not powerful enough to deliver the HAZE experience" says Free Radical

THOSE ****ERS!! I will not support this product. Crysis looks better too btw.

I really like the sound of this.

You’re definitely going to feel something for your comrades. Really, war isn’t horrifying because of the blood – it’s horrifying because of who’s bleeding. If you care about the people who die, your gaming experience will be richer. It will mean something.

Granted, it's not the first time something like this has been promised, but FR is pretty good when it comes to creating real characters, so maybe the company will actually nail this part.

Back at E3 someone posted these shots along with their undoctored versions which didn't look quite as nice.
It pisses me off too. I really wished all these alias/texture filter problems were going to be fixed for this gen. It's even worse now, because games are using more polygons and more transparent textures. In the undoctored images, the palm fronds and grass blades lose most of their detail, especially around the edges.

But this is from FR so it can't be that bad!

I'm playing through Second Sight right now and the game is very good, both gameplay and story-wise. Now that I finally saw something from Free Radical (never played Timesplitters), I know Haze will probably be worth waiting.

Did you guys see the interview with David Doak?

Nice find. I hadn't seen that. I chatted with Steven Ellis and the script writer guy there at E3 and they were both really excited about the game. This is the game that I'm getting a 360 or a PS3 for!

Also - did you notice he mentions Martin Hollis in there and then seems like he might have said too much. It's certainly hard to imagine Zoonami may actually release a real game, but maybe they have something Wii related going on.

Not entirely on topic, but I'd seriously love a Timesplitters game that was built ground up for Wii. I've never managed to fully get over the wonky aiming in the TS games (didn't play the last one, maybe it got better there), but I think it'd work real well on Wii.
