Pretty standard cartoon teeth. Not sure what you are hung up on...

I am not a fan of Penny Arcade, at all, but I'm a glass half full kind of guy so maybe they did this to steer us away from Gamestop?

That was nice of them.

I hate to be that guy, but Gabe's art is amazing when he wants it to be. He definitely phoned that poster in :/

I agree that lately he's been altering his style into a more Ren n' Stimpy flavor for whatever reason, but his style is constantly changing. I'd say his style has gone through at least four or five major changes in the 11 years PA has been around.

You can't take one image and say all of the guy's work is awful, he's not Rob Liefeld.
Too obvious, I know.

It's also worth noting that PA has been hiring artists to draw stuff for them since they launched. Gabe's "changing" art style may not be Gabe at all.

Any more details on this?

Is that not common knowledge?

A friend of mine, Mike Sanzone, and a friend of his that I didn't know, drew for PA when PA was just getting started. It was difficult for them to get money on time (which is true of all freelance work, but this was when we were fresh out of college) so he quit. He was quite surprised when I ran into him about 3 years ago in Brooklyn and told him that PA was insanely huge. He had no idea. He hasn't played a videogame since coming to my house in high school (we are both in our mid 30s now).

He told me that PA had hired new guys as soon as they quit. I've read on other forums stories about artists working for them and getting sick of not getting paid on time and getting no credit (which they know going in). So i figured it was common knowledge.

For the record this isn't the reason I don't like Penny Arcade. I just don't like them because I don't find them funny.

And for the record, my friend Mike - last I heard - which was a couple years ago, was making an insane amount of money selling these for about 25K a piece. http://michaelsanzone.wordpress.com/

Quick edit: Put in the quote i was responding to.

I actually have noticed some weird art in the main strip lately. The two main characters have evolved tremendously over time, for sure, but I thought that they had kind of settled on an established design in the, say, 09/10 era. This past year, I've noticed all his art getting a lot more exaggerated and angular. The arms and hands of Gabe and Tycho, for instance, look really odd sometimes. And fingers are often elongated and weirdly shaped. I dunno, I like his art, but I agree with critics in here. It seemed like he hit a peak and started regressing.

Edit: so yeah, post above me, maybe that's all there is to it....

Perhaps for those who follow PA, but for me this is news. Thanks for the information!

I have to move out of my house, you're more than welcome to come deconstruct some of the wooden facilities we have on the land and make a few. Artistic talent not included..

I need a more detailed and trustworthy account, to be honest. Gabe's style has evolved and grown because hes self taught and frequently draws the strip live on a streaming service, so I dont know what kind of work your friend did, but I'm not really buying the story.

I think Gabe is a skilled artist who's not afraid to change his style and experiment with new things. I give him a ton of respect but his art has failed to impress lately and I think its because hes stretching himself too thin.

I think the way he draws teeth is fine. Yes people dont have teeth like that and guess what, people dont have that hair either, nor do they have teeth the way he drew them before. The whole "people dont look like that" argument in art that isnt aiming to be photoreal is silly, flawed and shouldn't be used.

Plus, sometimes styles just dont match well. If you obviously dont plan a piece properly and your native style is a natural bad fit, then rushing a piece is going to show all your flaws.

Really? It comes as a surprise because lately he usually streams what he is drawing before he puts it up.

I don't dislike his art, but this poster is all sorts of bad, like many have pointed out, weird proportions, terrible colors, odd composition, etc. I'm more inclined to believe IT IS him, knowing PA since its very beginnings and his evolution as an artist.

The shiny, textured look doesn't suit the style. It's like Toriyama after he started using the computer degradè look. Terrible.

lol, why so serious.

I think he adopted this style of teeth immediately around the time he started to get inspired be certain female artists who draw cutesy teeth like that. It took some getting used to, but I wish he'd restrict it to certain archetypes instead of slapping it on everyone.

When did he decide that red noses were going to be his "thing"? It's such a contrived a attempt at cultivating a 'trademark style'.

Yeah I don't like how goofy Gabe's art has become. Sometimes it looks like their faces are being sucked into a black hole.

I am certainly not trying to create a breaking news story here and I also don't have any expectatations of whether each singular person would believe me or not. I just told my story as I know it.

I also never said that Gabe doesn't ever draw. He clearly does. He did when my friend worked for him. He was very clear to them, also, about what exactly he wanted. It is his vision.

And who knows. What im talking about was like 10 years ago. It's possible that he hasn't hired anyone in 9. I have no idea. At that point he may have been working another job. I really don't know the whole story.

But I do feel confident in what I posted. I know a fast track to getting banned here would be making stuff up like this... but this was something I was privy to. It's not like i heard it from a friend of a friend of a friend. I heard it from the guy who did the work. So I felt comfortable posting it.

Looks Drake wants to give the old man some man love and Elena is saying "no!".

Who would have thought Penny Arcade would find it difficult to express the personalities of the characters from an exclusive PS3 game, and end up doing a quick shoddy job? Are we pretending they even play PS3 games?

How do you know what they play? Just asking out of curiosity. I usually don't read Tycho's text and just read the comic; from what I can tell, they play every big PS3 exclusive. I mean, Infamous and Killzone have both had comics this year, haven't they? And I do remember Tycho raving about Uncharted 2 when it came out, correctly pointing out that Emily Rose is the real star of that franchise.

Some of the illustrators I work with would probably say this looks better than the game.

Some people prefer cartoon style and character to aesthetic awe.
