Freedom Fighters - gem, mediocre, or just plain overlooked?

One of my favourite games last generation was Freedom Fighters. Although the story was nothing original - in an alternate history key events in the Cold War are won by the Soviet Union as they gradually encroach upon the western hemisphere and America - it was rather refreshing where videogames are concerned at last. The squad dynamics, too, while perhaps simplistic, added a lot of depth and strategy to every level. Finally, the sheer amount of stuff that could happen on screen (your 12 teammates along with double the number of baddies) was highly impressive at the time.

And yet despite all this the game seems to have sold poorly. A sequel was announced a couple years ago but nary a word has ever been heard of it. With Kane & Lynch the IO Interactive guys seemed to have moved on. Would anyone else want them to explore bring Freedom Fighters back for another ride on next gen hardware? I sure would.

I loved it, the 1st hour is pure balls to the wall heart pounding thought stopping movie like action.

Overlooked definitily. Deserved better

Got a question... don't Eidos own IO? Its just, Freedom Fighters was published by EA but Hitman by IO (so do IO own the IP?) and also K&L (Looks amazing!) also Eidos... was just curious...

Anyway, was going to buy this on Xbox but the shop said I wasn't old enough, this thread has alerted me to go to amazon marketplace and purchase it for PC!

:D

That. Anything with a Jesper Kyd soundtrack is insta-awesome anyway.

My bad. I completely forgot about the music - classic. One final thing that made this game great: the difficulty. If you just tried to run around you would get mowed down. The game forced you to use your squad and use it well. The one complaint was that they never fleshed out the multiplayer: no online and only 4 levels was pretty bare bones.

Absolutely overlooked. I loved this game probably far more than I should have. I have always hoped they'd put together a sequel, but nothing's coming...

For its time, it was great, and I think more people should take a cue from it and make more fun, comic book-like action games.

F those commies.

Eidos bought IO-Interactive and Freedom Fighters was an EA IP, that's a big reason why we never saw a sequel.

But luckily UBI copied (really, they blantly copy from other games 8O) the innovative AI control system.

I was so surprised at how awesome this game was. It did have some problems with the squad AI and stuff but as a 3rd person shooter it's fun as hell and the story keeps you pumped up and excited about the next mission.

Amazingly original storyline I think, I love alternate history stuff like that

IO wasn't owned by EA at that time, but yeah, IO has the IP, so they can make a sequel if Eidos lets them.

Also too young? Wasn't the game rated T? :lol

Back on topic, this game makes me wonder why no one has faith in Kane and Lynch. IO hasn't made a bad game yet, and Freedom Fighters is nothing but proof that they're more than just a one-trick Hitman pony. Definitely an last-gen overlooked gem in my book.

EDIT: wait, now someone else is saying that EA owns the IP. Can someone clear this up, I'm confused! :(

:( why oh why did you neat me to it?

i never played it over the first 10 minutes cause i felt everytime like the controls are bad, at least on the gc version which i own.
if you all say it's good i'll try to give it another try.

Garbage - rented it and didn't even have the motivation to keep playing.

I thought someone gave it a 9 somewhere, which is why I looked into it...I remember being pissed at wasting my 6 bucks to rent it.

Got a 15 rating over here (I live in the UK) although it wasn't bbfc as far as I can remember... but being 14 at the time, the dude in GAME wouldn't let me buy it >.< Then I spent the money on something else and forgot about it... :P

get the hell out!

I really enjoyed it too, actually played through it around 3 or 4 times which is very rare for me.

It apparently sold over a million so a sequel may not be out of the question but if the IP is owned by EA then I doubt we'll see one as thats not enough for them.

Above average, but overlooked. Not a classic in any sense of the word, but I enjoyed it.
Pretty much. Had some great cinematic moments, but the way they presented it didn't tie the story together well, imo. Singular levels with a lot of things happening between missions, most of which were not really conveyed in cutscenes, made for a disjointed plot.

If IO funded the development themselves then they will likely own all the rights, if EA funded it then they will own the rights. Doubt anybody here can say for sure which case it is.

True, I do not know it for a fact. :)

Perfect rental game. Great for one play through, easy to play through it over a short period of time, and really no compelling reason to play through it more than once. I enjoyed it quite a bit but I don't regret not having it in my collection.

Great game. Great feel, great controls, great level design. It was one of the first games I played with good ragdoll when a group is hit by grenades. The enemies are pretty smart too.

I don't like how many bullets it takes to kill enemies, that's the one mark i'd put against it.
