Freedom from porn! Apple now censoring podcast descriptions?

Here is what happened: my show has become another unintended consequence of Steve Job's War on Porn.

The latest episode is called "Kicking Against the Pricks." The phrase comes from the Bible, it means "rebellion against authority." And just as it is for one of the characters in my show, this rebellion is futile. Here is what the show title looks like on iTunes:

My friend and WNYC Colleague Ellen Horne, the executive producer at Radiolab, says the staff was more amazed than horrified when Apple censored the word SPERM. Plus she adds that the *** makes it sort of like a "fun adventure to figure out what the show is even about." I wish I could be as amused.

This is getting ridiculous now.

Prick? Sperm? Such naughty, dirty words. Should start a bet up against which random word will get banned next.

I'd say these stand a chance if they aren't banned already;

b*m
b***s
t*t
s*x
b****t
m*n
w***n

What a bunch of god damn cry babies. If it doesn't hinder a search for that specific file or podcast then who the hell cares, is it really worth making an issue over? My goodness.

eh, but if they take away the ability to watch porn on their products, then I won't be buying an Ipod Touch on Saturday (ok, not really)

Censoring the word 'sperm' is a bit baffling, but isn't it a rule on iTunes that you can't have objectionable content without the explicit tag?

Can't speak for other places but it's used here as an insult and some times to infer someone is homosexual.

Example;

"Fuck you, ya prick!"

It's something that's quite commonly used.

Wait until September. ;)

And GAF is overreacting a bit again. This doesn't inhibit your ability to download the podcast and listen to it uncensored, but it does keep parents from going apeshit over potentially offensive language. I'm not really seeing the big deal here, although I suppose it would be nice if they gave you the option for a language filter.

Really, Apple can do whatever they want with the platform since they goddamn own it.

1) this is stupid

2) this happens all the time for album and movie listings and it's stupid there too. as an example, see "YPF" which is censored on its poster, censored in its Rottentomatoes Database name, and uncensored in the URL bar.

3) i don't think this is new, i remember seeing censored titles for songs a while ago in itunes

What the fuck's wrong with Apple lately?

Lately? Apple is a technology company for Communists. Just imagine for a second that we all live in a world that apple users are comfortable with. We all drive the same car, with the same radio in it. We all wear the same clothes. Brush our teeth with the same type of toothbrush. We do all of this because this restriction of choice makes products more reliable. That is the world of the communist Apple user.

At least our Apple Telescreen in the wall will have pictures of Jobs instead of Big Brother.

WAR IS PEACE - FREEDOM IS SLAVERY - IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Hey, don't equate communism with something as shit awful as Apple >:(

Oh, and yeah, Apple hates everything good and fun in this world. I'm sure they kick kittens too. That's how awful they are.

What if the podcast I want to search for is "The Penis Owner's Manual" or "Cocks"?
Is search uncensored? If it's uncensored, does it also hit against the censored display version?

Which of these query/name/display would generate a hit?
Code:
Search Term Podcast Name Displayed Name
   Cocks Cocks C***s
   Cocks Cunts C***s
   Cunts Cunts C***s
   Cunts Cocks C***s
   C***s Cocks C***s
   C***s Cunts C***s

It's like you're baiting me at this point. :lol

The policy is pretty simple to understand...whatever is easily accessible to the public without some kind of purchase or willing download should be as G rated as possible.

It's not like the actual product is censored, just the depiction of the product in their public store is.

When they start censoring the actual products, let me know.

Interestingly enough, cock isn't a censored word as I just found out by doing your little experiment. :lol

Cunt and pussy are, but not cock.

Searching for pussy finds the things you're looking for with the censored word "pussy" in them. The top hits all had "p***y" in their titles, so it knows what is censored and will return it if the user is searching for it.

Does the search work for both "Sperm" and "S***m"?
Searching for "c**t" yielded things with CT in the titles, but nothing that was supposed to say cunt. If you want to find cunt stuff, type cunt into the search box.

Why is it ridiculous? You're not being forced to use Apple software. They are other alternatives for podcast delivery. RSS being one of them.

I just don't get all this Apple outrage going on these days when they are alternatives for almost all their product lines. If you don't like their walled garden approach, use something else.

Nah, I pointed out that anyone who cares about this is overreacting already...without question.

This is like complaining that theatres don't allow tits to be shown on movie posters in theatre lobbies.

I can't wait that long. It's been 2+ years without some kind of music player. besides, what will the new Touchs have that will make me regret getting one now?

as for the actual censoring, it doesn't seem that big a deal. as long as the censoring is just on the displayed name, it's not a problem

Those cookie cutter motherfuckers just want to play it safe as moist dudes not as zune marketplace

iTunes store has had titles censored from the beginning. I remember people making a fuss about Bitches Brew being censored when it first opened. It's nothing new.
