FreePSXBoot has been released: Definitive PSX softmod?

Months ago Tonyhax was released, a software exploit for some savegames: Tony Hawk's series, Spyro series, Crash Bandicoot series, etc.

Now FreePSXBoot does not requiere any game at all. The vulnerability is triggered while the PSX shell is reading the Memory Card structure.

Limitations:
  • Only for SCPH-9002 models. Other models support will come in the future.
  • It does not work all the time. It looks like a problem with the CPU cache, it will be probably fixed in the future.
  • Savegame cannot be transferred with a file manager.
TECHNICAL DETAILS

Hacking/Modding/Emulation have been keeping old console games alive.... Love all the work that's come from CEMU/Yuzu/Xenia/RSCP3 these last few years. Just spent the last weeks modding my Wii U to turn it into a emulation machine and have been having a great time going back and revisiting old NES and SNES/Genesis games, not to mention the awesome Gamecube games that I grow nostalgia pangs for.

Always insteresting to see this stuff, although I do struggle to see it's utility when modchipped PS1s are a dime a dozen, my mate had one for years he bought used and never even knew was chipped, and the PICS commonly used are literally pennies.

If you'd be able to make any ps1 region free, akin to freemcboot for ps2, I'd argue it's pretty useful. Sure, repairs for ps1 are easy enough, but if it'll be possible to just pick up any old ps1 instead, it would probably be preferable to most people.

On the other hand, anyone looking to get into ps1 would most likely go for ODE solutions anyway.
