French studio 'Spiders' is shutting down (Greedfall)

A shame. SteelRising was a great game.
I had a lot of fun with Steel Rising, but the boss fights were a joke! You could craft grenades without limit and just nuke each boss with them. Each boss battle could be beaten within 30 seconds, and that is not cool. But if you avoid that tactic, some of the fights were just unfair at times. I am not that great at Souls-like games but I really do enjoy the challenges they provide. And when compared to older Spiders games like Mars War Logs for example, or The Technomancer, one can appreciate how much that team improved.

Greedfall is my favorite of their titles, but this last one I just couldn't do the combat, and I gave up early. I think they also made Bound by Flame which is a game on my backlog that is another of those jank fest RPG's like Greedfall. Shame they are closing up shop. They have created a shitload of decent AA Eurojank titles that for some reason I have always enjoyed.

I play games for the story, absolutely hate hard games. I'm a old guy with a job.

They couldn't make a non-jank game to save their lives studio.
Fixed.

I still don't know how Don't Nod is still in business. Every Life is Trash game after the first one has sold less and less it seems. Banishers and Lost Records sold so badly even Don't Nod had to publicly state they were failures. I legit think Don't Nod should have ended the Life is Garbage game after Before the Storm, and just worked on new IPs instead of milking that franchise for like 4 games afterwards.
Dontnod only made the original Life Is Strange and Life Is Strange 2. They had nothing to do with Before The Storm, True Colors, Double Exposure, or Reunion all of those were developed by Deck Nine. Dontnod walked away from LiS seven years ago and haven't looked back.

You can complain about all the games they've made since, but they have had no part of the continued success/failure of the LiS franchise since they wrapped LiS2 in 2019.

My bad. You're right. I thought they continued the franchise after 2.

Loved Before the Storm, hated 2, True Colors was acceptable I guess.

Looking it up, Don't Nod literally just released Aphelion today lol. Legit never heard of it. I don't even remember seeing a post on Neogaf about it, and Gaf has threads about random games every day.

With that said, I'm still surprised they still have the capacity to keep making these games after the failures of Banishers and Bloom and Rage.

I thought Spiders would progressively make better games improving on Greedfall and finally hit with a blockbuster. Wow, how wrong I was. Saddened.
Greedfall was amazing in the fact that it was basically pure politics with monsters thrown in, but the rpg framework somehow kept things interesting.

I think Greedfall was their best selling title. They should have just done more of the same.

They went off and did Steelrising, which I think sold poorly.

They made some strange choices that led to their demise.

I wish I was surprised, but GreedFall was honestly just not very good.
Nor was it successful.
Their best selling game, sure, but not compared to the production cost that was spent on it.

So to then go and make not only NOT a sequel but a prequel of all things (it is known that people give way fewer fucks about prequels than sequels)....
The game could have been great and still would have failed - and it was even further away from great than its predecessor.

I have a strong inkling that Nacon is partly to blame for the inane decision-work that lead to this.
Maybe thinking that only higher production values could lead to success, which we all know is blatantly false.

They were best at very charming, but technically flawed games - which kept them running for long enough.
Either they should have gone back to that - or their way of making games was simply no longer possible in current years (considering the rising prices and drop of interest post Covid).

Man I thought they would at least be around until the DLC but being forced to immediately close like this is rough.

It can't be understated just how much of a commercial flop The Dying World must have been. Even just looking at the steam CCUs, it currently has 1/3rd the number of players of the first Greedfall which is almost 7 years old....that is just insane.

I liked the idea of their games more than the games themselves, which were all pretty janky in practice. Still, always sad to see a studio close, especially one with a clear identity.

I gotta be honest, this is one studio that should've gotten a bail out from one of the bigger publishers. They were punching above their weight with the shoestring budgets they were working with and could've done so much better if they had proper funding behind them. Would've liked to have seen "old school" Sony get them in their stable.

Too bad none of the big shot AAA execs out there recognized that. Or perhaps some did and/or Spiders still chose to go out with some dignity and integrity.

site is in French by default

The world would be in a tremendously better shape if it was french by default instead of english.
If the USA spoke french the world would be in a much better shape too. And charlesthe little boy king would understand it if only he had more brains than ears.

French is the langage of diplomacy, english is the langage of trade, and what is lamer than a commerce ? Apart from banking i dont see anything.

Technomancer was decent and so was Greedfall 1. The up and comers who if publishers would inject more funds into their project would actually turn up a quality product. Too bad they are now outperformed by the Larian and Owlcat of the world.

I mean look at the trailer they made for their last game:

Trailer screams "We want our game to flop and our studio to shut down". Ugly, male wannabe girlboss stereotype in trailers is death sentence for games in these days. Avoiding this stereotype in trailers is NECESSITY now. I'm not saying game failed just because of this, but because of this a lot of gamers don't bother to give a fair chance to these type of games. Avoid this shit for all cost if you don't wanna flop and shut down.

That is a shame. Spiders have released some interesting games over the years, many of which I played on PC, even if they might have been a bit janky and low-budget. They were masters of the 6 out of 10 game in my opinion; rarely amazing, sometimes hitting that 7/10 sweet spot but also never truly bad. I often found that their games, "ambition on a budget" so to speak, were more interesting than the more polished triple A stuff personally.

Judging by Paris as of late... no :)

This statement from their union rep is damning. Seems that Nacon deliberately went out of their way to sabotage the studio and ensure it would not survive, although it also seems that some mismangement on Spiders' end may have contributed to that.....but the fault is primarily wiith Nacon and this makes them sound scummy as fuck.
