Friday Gay Theatre: Top Gun

Seriously, QT shouldn't be allowed to sniff Tom Cruise's jockstrap. Much less demean a masterpiece in some shitty independent film.

Not only that, Tarantino's scene about Top Gun is completely wrong. His whole argument centers around the fact that in the final scene, Iceman says to Maverick, "You are still dangerous, but you can ride my tail any time," to which Maverick responds, "Bullshit, you can ride mine." But that's not what they say, they say "You can be my wingman anytime," "Bullshit, you can be mine," as any true student of filmmaking knows.

So not only is Tarantino mocking a movie beyond his ability to create in the first place, he has to misquote it to make his so-called "point."

Anyone else hate "gay movies"? It really is an insult to audiences and the art itself. Their first priority seems to be to make a GAY movie. Not a GOOD movie, but just a gay one. One with lots of scantily clad men, heavy handed preaching and some of the worst dialogue not seen since the Star Wars prequels.

there are some pretty decent ones out there, but by and large i agree you. however, they're not much different than a lot of other pander-to-some-minority films for easy profit.

There are plenty of movies with gay characters that isn't about being gay.

Almost every character in 'The Hours' is gay, and it's a good movie.

That Almaldovar film is pretty good too.

ewan mcgregor is at least bi in greenaways pillow book.

And a couple of others I'm probably forgetting.

Since we're on the topic of mainstream entertainment and the portrayal of gays, what's the concensus of shows like Queer As Folk and The L Word? i've only seen parts of the former, but i'm a pretty big fan of The L Word, despite the oversexed tone of the show a lot of times. Are these shows for gays and lesbians, or moreso for everyone else?

not sure what everyone else thinks, but i can't stand QAF. it's full of dramatic nightclubbing queens who are total stereotypes. then again, it is a drama.... maybe im just cynical :p

Need a clincher? Cheap tricks track on the soundtrack is pretty much it.

"With just a little luck
A little cold blue steel
I cut the night like a razor blade
Till I feel the way I want to feel

There's a raging fire in my heart tonight
Growing higher and higher in my soul
There's a raging fire in the sky tonight
I want to ride on the silver dove
Far into the night

Till I make you take me
On your mighty wings
Make you take me
On your mighty wings across the sky
Take me on your mighty wings
Take me on your mighty wings tonight

Take me on your mighty wings
Take me on your mighty wings"

"this is giving me a hard on.

don't tease me"

:lol :lol never thought of Top Gun as gay, but yeah, Tarantino is right. :lol

next your gonna tell me that Back to the Future is actually about a homosexual pedo who puts enough drugs into a minor that they think they went into the past using a car.

I laughed for at least 30 seconds straight. Great wording.

There are plenty of quality movies with strong gay characters who aren't portrayed as stereotypes or left in the background after a blatant onscreen "outing" (tnw mentioned some, I could go over more if you genuinely want). There's been a rise in lowbrow pandering in DVD rentals and sales because people happily watch it. Not unlike the direct-to-video horror market or the black/urban sub-genre, many of these movies are made on the cheap and aimed at the lowest common denominator who's looking for something to pick up that appeals to their grouping specifically.

Generally speaking, it should go without saying that if a flick intentionally shows a gay lead or characters, you're going to be looking at a gay-themed movie; whether a simple spin on a "straight" rom-com or something more issue-based (AIDS, rights, etc), we're not often included without a reason. It's been my experience that foreign directors just handle the material with far more intelligence and maturity (not that they're immune to the brainless claptrap): the French have a good handle on the topic... Almodovar, Tropical Malady, Happy Together also come instantly to mind, and both American and international filmmakers have used homosexuality as an underlying theme for decades.

The correlation between gays and "camp" films is another interesting area of discussion we could venture into... :)
