JUST IN: Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman has accepted offer to be U.S. ambassador to Russia, source tells NBC News

Uh. Yikes. Talk about stepping into a shitstorm. Dude was a decent governor for a Republican, he should have tried to replace Hatch instead.

Edit: I guess I titled the thread wrong. He's agreed to be the Ambassador to Russia

I wish him luck. Aside from him supporting Trump during the campaign, I always liked him, and thought he was a good politician. He really should be ambassador to China though, given his expertise in the area, however.

surely this guy doesn't have some russian skeletons in his closet right?

I would be highly shocked if he did, far more than if Trump had Russian skeletons, at least. He's one of the few GOP I have any respect left for, along with Romney and a few others.

Wow, that's a hell of a pick. I wish he'd run for Prez in 2016... but I'm sure he'll be a responsible ambassador.

He would've lost, just like every other half sane candidate in that race.

He always struck me as one of the most reasonable national GOP figures. He took up the offer to be the ambassador to China for Obama, at the cost of his later political career (thanks, Obama), but he felt it was the right thing to do.

Honestly, I wouldn't wish this on him, as he's stepping into a fiasco. But this was a good pick.

Well he was running against Obama immediately after quitting the ambassador position, basically he double crossed Obama and still got burn by the GOP.

Granted that Huntsman is a qualified and competent politician with past ambassadorial experience, but he speaks Chinese and not Russian so if you wanted him to be an ambassador to an important country, why not China and then choose someone with experience on Russia for Russian ambassador?

I generally like Huntsman and feel sorry for this career move for him - particularly because I would've rather had him as a saner Republican voice in the senate.

At least we have someone responsible with their hands on the wheel there. Not that it'll really matter, since Trump doesn't listen to anyone outside of the Bannon/Kushner/Priebus circle anyway.

Terry Brandstad is friends with Xi Jinping isn't he? Probably not a bad relationship to have in that position.

I don't think running against Obama counts as a double cross. He served his time under Obama's admin, and then went on to do other things. Outside of the fear of Huntsman making it to the general, I don't think Obama cared much one way or the other.

Part of me thinks Trump refuses to do this because it make him too much like Obama.
