Frontier Developments (Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coaster) secure unnamed film IP

Jurassic Park seems pretty likely.

It's a high possibility. Think of a theme park game but instead of building amusement rides you are building a park of dinosaur attractions. Alongside of that though it's a survival game too. You need to also build and maintain farms to produce food to keep the dinos fed and content, and you need to build guards and defense forces to keep the tourists safe while also controlling the more dangerous dinos. Typical themepark disasters would be replaced by simple exhibit malfunctions where the dinos get loose and you have to "contain" the situation.

That could be rather original spin on the themepark genre....

Honestly, upon thinking on it harder, I'd say that Jurassic Park is much more likely than Star Trek.

I feel like it has to be Star Trek, surprisingly enough.

It is a world renowned and loved movie franchise, their words. Now, Frontier is not a huge dev studio, they already have Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster running side by side, they really just can't afford a third group doing something completely different concurrenlty. They are going to have to share personnel, so any new franchise would best be something similar to one of the two current ones, something that might share a lot of code and dev work, even use the same game engine. So, a space game would fit the slot nicely. Something like Elite at it's roots, a game with both large and small spaceships, space combat, planets you can land on and drive on and run around, space stations, with multiplayer capabilities.

Take Elite at it's core, reskin it and put new art assets in and you could make a decent Star Trek game out of it with a modicum of work, especially when you take Elite's upcoming new features into consideration.

I think it's a Star Trek game.

The more I think about it, the more it has to be Jurassic Park. Not sure anyone would refer to Star Trek as a beloved movie franchise. It started as a successful TV series and spawned multiple successful variations throughout the years and released a few OK movies. And Elite currently is too similar and too much of a mess to not make the fan base feel absolutely betrayed.

Jurassic Park is nothing but the movies to the masses and the park pedigree makes it a no-brainer.

Yeah, the more I ponder it the more I agree, it is most likely Jurassic Park.

Which, in all honesty, if done right could be freakin fantastic by Frontier.

They want it as a 3rd ongoing IP so it's not going to be another park simulator (aka Jurassic Park) or another space sim (Star Trek).

My guess: James Bond. Activision let it lapse and nobody else has moved on it.

Guys, I know what it is:

Its obviously sci-fi, and when you look at most popular science fiction films of the last 30 years, only one thing comes to mind:

There was a movie made for the original TV series, I remember the seats shaking in the cinema as the ship appeared.

Just because they edited a couple of episodes of the original series into some movies it isn't a movie franchise. A couple of Doctor Who episodes were released in theaters but no one considers that a movie franchise.

It is kinda strange that seemingly no one jumped at the 007 license after Activision let it lapse.

I don't know much about Frontier Devs, do they have people there with action game experience?

By all accounts the bond licence is ridiculously expensive and frontier isn't exactly swimming in cash, although perhaps 4 years without anyone bothering to licence it has knocked eon's price down considerably

No. They do not have any experience making action games. Its all space games and park tycoons all the way down.

Also looking at their site for any job openings that could clue you in is useless. They aren't hiring a whole lot more people, so they are using an already established team within their company. They aren't going to get experimental with a hollywood IP, they are going to stick with what they know.
