FUEL - ahead of its time?

It was too big, to be honest.

Felt empty and lifeless. The weather effects were nice, but if you have a big open world, and yet have nothing to do otherwise, then what's the point?

Sad, because I really wanted to enjoy it.

As mentioned by others, some people find it fun to zone out while driving around and enjoying the sights. There was a surprising amount of visual variety and it was rewarding to find a notable landmark or capture a scenic view. The racing events were extremely enjoyable for me as well, the controls were perfect and finding shortcuts in the tracks was a lot of fun.

I thought about Fuel when I watched the new Mad Max gameplay trailer too. I played it for a few hours but I couldn't really get into it because the driving mechanics weren't that fun and although the world was huge, ti was incredibly repetitive and empty. Driving through the desert is fun, for the first 10 minutes with nothing else in sight. Same for the woods, canyons, etc. Just too little variety in the world, the whole thing felt copied and pasted about 10 times more than it should've been.

I remember those days. Good times. Trying to voice chat was a pain in the butt though.
Good times, Blizzard. It was remarkable that because the racing aspect of the game was extremely janky in multiplayer, pretty much all we could do was drive around randomly to try and discover new areas.

The Steam group we used still exists, and I can't bring myself to leave it. Should we dust off the game this weekend?
Wow, didn't expect to see you two posting. I'll install it again just in case. I can do the first half of Saturday, or Sunday before late night. We should try to rope Javaman in.

*edit* I neglected to mention, the one other really memorable aspect of the game was the storm/tornado race(s). I don't think I've played any other racing games like that.

It had its flaws but the world was a driving enthusiast and explorer's paradise. Crazy that they managed to have satisfyingly detailed world across 100s of miles. And also keep a constant eerie desolate vibe aka Red Dead, DayZ, Fallout 3.

There were times when it'd get stale but it's a game I can go back to. And you've just reminded me of it so..

Any one know if the servers are up on PS3 still and if so feel like jumping on for some free ride?

I loved Fuel when it came out, even though I was expecting more (yeah, big hype). It's amazing how vast the world is, but my problem with it was that it screams "randomly generated", except for a few bits here and there. Rivers defying gravity, floating stuff, the same tank truck everywhere using the same "pose" with the same three barrels behind it, the roads felt all generic and non men made. It lacked assets variety.

A better soundtrack and gameplay could help too. The problem was not being "too big". That's a good thing, in my opinion, actually. The problem was how they made it.

But Id kill for a proper made sequel. Sad that Codemasters is in bad shape. They used to be my favorite studios. =/

You sure you weren't thinking of Dirt? Or Grid? Or Blur?

Nah, some of the screens in OP made me think of Pure, which I remember being funner.

Played FUEL earlier today, it was okay. But didn't recognise it, cleared it off my list finally.

Always a fan of blur and grid. Shame the blur sequel never happened, autosport is decent. I own the dirt games too but never really bothered with them properly.
They're nothing like FUEL and Pure though, but they're worth checking out still.

I guess I just loved driving around 90% of the time and doing an event or two in between - I enjoyed them. Also I prefer having "empty" worlds to "do stuff every 5 inches" worlds, maybe that is one of the reasons too.
This.

FUEL was so great. I loved to drive around aimless and explore the world. The huge cliffs in the south east, etc <3

But I did like 1nsane as well. It was such a good game that time

As someone who really values exploration and a sense of scale in games, FUEL was sublime. 130+ hours is what my Steam account says I logged into it and I believe it. Unfortunately my hard drive died awhile back and I lost my 100% file but I still play it every now and then.

I had a great time with this game just driving around and taking in the nice landscapes. The proper 'game' part of FUEL is so-so, but the scale is amazing and it's a relaxing timewaster kind of thing.

Some parts of the game are like therapy. Driving through the woods at night, just to catch sunrise at the shore - the scenery was really amazing. Nice soundtrack, too.

Some of the events really pissed me of though.
