Future Shop is shutting down here in Canada, effectively immediately.
The company says it is consolidating its brand into Best Buy, which is its parent company.
All Future Shop stores will be closed as of today to be either rebranded into a Best Buy or just shut down permanently.
It is not yet known which stores will be closed for good.

BREAKING: Effective immediately, all Future Shop stores in Canada are closed. Some will convert to Best Buy, others will close permanently.

hopefully the Futureshop guys who work there get severance pay similar to some of us Target Canada employees

The Future Shop store closings comes as U.S. discounter Target Corp. shuts all its 133 stores in Canada, while other failing retailers also are closing outlets, leaving a lot of retail space to fill in the coming months.

Best Buy said “a significant number” of its Future Shop and Best Buy stores are located near each other, often in the same parking lot, which resulted in overlaps and too much retail space.

After the Future Shop closures, the company will have a total of 192 stores across the country under the Best Buy name, including 136 large ones and 56 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores.

Ron Wilson, president of Best Buy Canada, said 80 per cent of customers are within a 15 minute drive to a store and “this won’t change. We will continue to have a strong store presence in all major markets in Canada.”

As a result of the consolidation, about 500 full-time and 1,000 part-time jobs will be lost, the company said. The affected employees will receive severance and help with outplacement support, it said.

Best Buy expects to post restructuring charges and non-restructuring impairments of between $250-million and $350-million, or 41 cents a share (U.S.) to 58 cents a share, it said. This includes $175-million (Canadian) to $225-million of cash charges, mostly tied to future rent obligations and severance, that will be paid over the next five years.

The company said it expects diluted earnings per share to be negatively affected in fiscal 2016 in the range of 10 cents (U.S.) to 20 cents a share, primarily because of a temporary increase in operational expenses related to the consolidation and store disruptions. But it doesn’t expect the negative earnings impact to continue into future years, it said.

It said it will invest up to $200-million (Canadian) in Best Buy stores and its web site. It said it will launch major home appliances in all stores while increasing staff levels.

“Any decisions that impact our people are never taken lightly,” Mr. Wilson said. “Our first priority is to support them through this change.”

Earlier this month, Hubert Jolly, chief executive of U.S. parent Best Buy, told analysts that sales in its international division dropped 12.4 per cent because of currency changes as well as a 4 per cent drop in same-store sales in Canada.

He said those sales at stores open a year or more – a key retail measure -- grew in the mobile phone category but “was more than offset” by declines in tablets, gaming and digital imaging.

Best Buy had already closed stores and let go staff in Canada over the past couple of years.

It cut 950 jobs at its namesake and Future Shop stores in early 2014 as it streamlined its business to take on tougher competition. The restructuring entailed consolidating sales departments and reducing management layers in Future Shop and Best Buy stores.

A year earlier, in 2013, Best Buy closed 15 of its then almost 230 big-box stores and cut roughly 900 employees.

The streamlining underscores the increasingly competitive retail landscape as U.S. discount giants Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Costco Wholesale expand in Canada while online players bolster their business here.

Best Buy Canada has tried to fight back, carrying out its own transformation plan under Mr. Wilson, who took over the top job in Canada in 2013. He opened 176 “stores-within-a-store” concepts, working with high-profile suppliers such as Microsoft and Samsung to give their fast-growing products more prominent space in the big-box Best Buy stores.

The company has also expanded its online offerings, introducing new categories and products including baby goods.

Dammit. My local one better be converted, then. There was murmurs about this possibly happening years ago, so I'm not terribly surprised, but it sure took a while.

Shit. I bought a Logitech G502 mouse from Future Shop yesterday and wasn't happy with it so I planned to exchange it for a different mouse today. Guess I'm screwed? 75 bucks down the toilet.

Future Shop gift cards work online only at best buy, don't they still? All hope is not lost.
This is enormous news though, FS was a staple in our box mall.
Guess they should've had a rewards program like BB.

This is immediate?

If I went to a Future Shop store today it would be closed?

Yeah, I use FS giftcards on BB site all the time.

I still have two E3 preorders with BB.

Ah shit, Future Shop is one of my favourite retailers. I just got my PS4 from there a month ago and a few games. I usually ask for gift cards from there as well. Hopefully the two stores I go to will just be rebranded, but I know there is a Best Buy already in one of those two cities.

I have games like MGS5 preordered at 39.99 through FS, and the MSRP is now 74.99. I'm going to be so bummed if preorders all get cancelled.

Good to know that my gift cards will work at best buy.ca though.

The cool thing about the future shop in my town was they would get steel cases for games and just give them away once it was past a few months after game day-1.

how can this happen out of the blue? I mean wtf? Nooooo. My warranties? My pre orders?

I guess we might need to wait on further news from some other source? Perhaps one I've heard of before? This seems like a pretty big thing to just happen out of nowhere, supposedly immediately.

The one near me closed suddenly last week. Thought it was just rural NS (everything is dying), but this comes as a shock. :( Hope everyone with pre-orders gets their stuff sorted.

they were the same store bestbuy and fs honestly.

Im still kinda shocked though.

I just checekd and my pre-orders are all done with them - thank god they were with amazon.ca this year holy shit that would suck.

Hopefully you all get your pre's converted to BB but i honestly wouldnt hold my breath fellas , bad news brown

What!? This so sudden! I really hope that my E3 pre-orders are intact and is taken care of via BB (which is the only logical course of action).

Also, it's terrible for those who work there and are part of the stores that will be permanently closed down as opposed to just being rebranded.

Insane if true.
I go to a gym in a mall that has both a Future Shop and a Best Buy, I'll stop by later today to see what's up.

This seems like something they'd announce a month+ beforehand, rather than just springing it on the public, "hey we're gonna be closed forever, starting now."

Maybe the source is getting confused. Certain underperforming stores were facing cutbacks or outright closure, so maybe they just jumped the gun a little. If the Orangeville store closed maybe they thought every store was closing?

This is a real shame. A good friend of mine works at Future Shop. Very sad day.

Also I got a cheap pre-order there. Dang it.

This is what I fear, there are some really close by.

I have a few from two E3's ago. Crappy news to hear all around. First Target and now Future Shop.

This is one in Ottawa that's pretty funny:

Lots of cases of "oh, it's not on sale at Best Buy, let's try next door."

Please for the love of god may our E3 pre-orders be transferred to Best Buy.
