G4 no longer being rebranded as the Esquire Network

Incompetent Management: The Saga of G4, even to the fucking end.

Guess G4 is as dead as Nick GaS was but with C-grade shows. WELP

Double Dare, Guts, and Legends of the Hidden temple oddly offered more entertainment than Cheaters does at times. At least kids find creative ways to fuck up in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey room. With cheaters and COPS, there's only very few ways a lot of these altercations can end. Although, GaS was only able to survive on out-the-door-life-support for seven or so years; let's see if G4 can beat that.

A gaming television channel would have nothing to offer in the year 2013.

People subscribe to podcasts, thousands of YouTube channels with HD videos, finding cheat codes takes a simple google search, you can get news instantly on Twitter/NeoGAF/dozens of blogs... And GameTrailers is doing in-depth video features (retrospectives, documentaries, etc) so the internet even has that covered as well.

I can't see what they would do to make people tune in.

The only I could think of would be e-sports, for the sake of those few people who don't join streams to watch, or maybe licensing more Japanese content like Game Center CX.

You would have thought that a gaming-oriented network would have thought about acquiring GCCX along with the likes of Sasuke/Ninja Warrior ages ago.

It's sad that Video Game has become a behemoth of an industry and the one channel that should be taking advantage of this just went full COPS and NINJA on us.

Well I'm sure if networks could leverage it they would

I mean you don't see Spike moving GT.TV to primetime.

I think there's a market for a channel dedicated to gaming and the gaming world, but not sure if the money to get it going is worth it for many

Maaaaan, I relied on G4 so heavily for E3 coverage back in the day. Their original programming was great, too.

Someday we'll get more Code Monkeys.

but not really because fuck you NBC

Talk about a complete fuck up. Trashed whats left of the channel to make room for a new one just to end up not even doing it.

I disagree. I think there's a lot to be said for production value, and podcasts/YouTube channels just don't have it. GameTrailers is the best thing out there right now as far as production goes, but I wish there was more like it.

This article spoiled my delusion that Bonnie Hammer faded into obscurity after making SciFi suck and canceling Farscape. I thought the G4 shows essentially all got cancelled to prep for the rebrand?

Hey, lay off. Bonnie Hammer is part of why we got the Tremors TV series, which was quality stuff. She's also part of why it was absolutely murdered by the channel.

So, carry on I guess.

Closely guarded secret? Not really. It was supposed to be Esquire in Q1 of this year and nothing ever happened. Writing was on the wall.

I personally think the idea to stop doing original programming catered towards gamers/nerds is a poor choice due to the incredible entertainment market.

This. Gutting TechTV just to help G4 with Extended/X-Play was something I never cared for, and what I always thought never made sense.

I miss Screensavers so very, very much...

G4 didn't buy TechTV for X-Play. They bought it because it was in more homes. Comcast created G4, but found that other cable and satellite companies were loathe to pick it up (which makes sense, why help out one of your competitors?). By buying TechTV, Comcast was able to trojan horse their own network onto other providers.

I can't see Comcast trying to reboot G4, so I'm guessing they're going to sell it. Someone here already mentioned that the WWE was interested. Wasn't Dana White and the UFC interested in buying it at one point as well?

I just emailed their webmaster and I got this reply.

"The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly."

Apparently, they need to hire a new webmaster too.

So let me get this straight. Esquire is no longer taking over the G4's space and it's going to be rebranded into something else and G4 is just going to be a deadzone full of reruns until they figure out what to do with it?

This is like every TV channel, not just G4. Video content on the Internet is taking over and the cable companies are having an aneurism.

Apparently the ghost of TechTV still lives on! G4 is a pathetic excuse for a channel and they're still paying for what they did to TechTV. They fucking deserve it. It just sucks that so many people are getting fired/laid off.

All I think of is how Kevin Pereira must cry every night when he sees how wealthy and famous Chris Hardwick became. For many years Chris just did the tech review segments and guest hosted AOTS. Now he is everywhere and I imagine made bank selling Nerdist to Legendary.

I did like Kevin Pereira though and I thought he did a great job on AOTS unfortunately no one is good enough to counter how terrible Candace Bailey was.

It's such a shame what happened to the network. I am in Canada and we get Reviews on the Run and EP but it's in SD so I end up watching it on FX in hd. I have high standards:P

Interesting fact: In Canada they STILL show old Leo Laporte shows I guess to fulfill tech requirements anyway these shows are so old the other day I saw them talking about a new tech called... USB haha!

I always felt that G4 should just contact twit and pay twit for rights to play their shows on the channel. maybe twit and something like giant bomb or another game site.

Those sites produce a ton of content , then create a little more original g4 only content and you'd be golden

What are the chances that we'll see another gaming channel like G4 pre-TechTV merger?

I mean, most of the stuff wasn't great, but I do have fond memories of that channel. I realize there is probably a lot of quality stuff on youtube, but I liked being able to turn it on randomly throughout the day :/

Am I the only one that wished Kevin Pereira was doing big things? Olivia Munn has her high-profile acting gig on The Newsroom, while KP has faded into obscurity.

so G4 will be a purgatory of just Cops/Ninja warrior/Campus PD/Bomb Patrol Afghanistan/insert 1970's-1980's film

I actually miss G4, they had excellent coverage of E3..not botched like spikeTV/GT

Edit: what happen to all who left G4? Kevin Pereira/Morgan Webb/Candice Bailey/Blair Herter?

Kevin has a semi-regular podcast that's ok when it gets the tone right and hosts a bunch of live shows in CA. Heard Blair on Indoor Kids a few months ago, but I don't know if he's behind the camera somewhere. Not sure about the rest.

What I do know is that the E3 week Xbox coverage they did was freaking amazing and fun to watch and I hope that Microsoft will decide that a nightly gaming/tech show would be a good idea for XBL (a season of that would be like one episode of Spielberg Halo budget wise).

Does this mean they might actually show E3 next year? Them cancelling all their E3 coverage was a huge pain.
Bandwidth limits suck.
