G4TV Big 3 Press Conference Grades

wow that is ownage

3 mario titles in the last months top 10 and some people say its irrelevant :lol :lol

It's because alot of people think that their opinion is the one of most people...

.

The only thing I disagree about is criticizing the Sony engineers who showed the wand. I actually found the presentation pretty charming, real and down to earth - and they got a lot of applause for it. I liked that better than the Wii inspired excitement faking actors in the Natal videos (I'm not bashing the technology, just the videos).

not to mention Mario Galaxy sold 8 million copies. Not relevant. At all. I'd say it's possible to argue Zelda is less relevant than it used to be, but not Mario. Not at all.

I thought all three companies put on a better conference than I expected. Good stuff all around. Nintendo may have been the least impressive overall, but they delivered the biggest improvement. The 2008 conference was a complete joke while they actually managed to deliver content for casual and hardcore gamers this time around.

nah.. Zelda TP sold about 7 millions (GC numbers combined) and DS sold about 5 millions.. Which means both sold more or about equal to the last mainline Final fantasy (meaning 12)

I think the biggest dissapointment was that Nintendo did not show up Wii Music 2.. with Nintendo tunes.. and a song creation mode..

I loved Wii Music..

Content
Microsoft - B+ (Lots of games, cool tech)
Nintendo - C+ (Megaton games, not much else, lame tech)
Sony - B (Lots of games, shown in depth, lame tech)

Announcements
Microsoft - A- (Rising!?, waving at the TV, Milo, more Halo)
Nintendo - A- (Megatons: Galaxy, Metroid, Mario Bros... shame only one is 2009)
Sony - C- (Most made already, MGS on PSP)

Presentation Skillz and Not Being Shit-Ass Boring
Microsoft - B- (Just good)
Nintendo - A (Well structured, cool stuff to break up the boring shit before wishing for swift death, brutal ending, Reggie's still got it)
Sony - F for FAIL-FUCKING-TASTIC. (Numbers, montage, numbers, montage...)

All 3 conferences announced games that I want to play, but Nintendo showed the games that I am most excited for, so as a result I enjoyed their show the most. It was a close call, however.

The only entertainment value I get from these things is from game/ hardware announcements. Don't really understand the point of watching a press conference for production values/ fluff.

One last thing: If you don't like Nintendo, why would you ever waste time watching a Nintendo conference? Really, what exactly were you expecting to see?

Wait, really? Wii Music is the joke of the generation for me. Wii Music is just one of the reasons I found their conference last year to be so painful. I mean, Wii Music, Animal Crossing, Wii Sports Resort, etc. are all incredibly unappealing.

To each his own, however...

visit the official wii music thread (if you have any open mind to discover the greatness of wii music)

and you will find why people think wii music was great

Microsoft: A
Sony: A
Nintendo: B-

I'd put Sony and MS right together. There were some things that impressed me and bored me with both of them. Nintendo, with Other M, really pulled a few tricks out of their hat, which was a nice surprise.

The numbers and figures portions of the presentations were boring, only from an enthusiasts point of view. The funny thing is that all the numbers and figures were probably the most exciting (good or bad) parts for investors.

I think it's fascinating what people are doing with it, but that doesn't change the fact that the game itself is weak, the samples are terrible, and it requires a lot of effort to extract any fun. If you have the patience and time to do something like that, more power to you, but even the best NicoNico vids left me unimpressed in that they sound like shit. The best vids simply mix real music something from Wii Music. That's not even a feature within the game.

It's an incomplete, poor sounding sandbox music game.

The drumming aspect could become more interesting if you could use two Wii-motes with Motion Plus attached along with the balance board, I suppose.

I feel like the game never really did a good job of encouraging player creation. The fact that a few resourceful people have managed to create something interesting with the game doesn't change anything. It's like saying that Mario World is a great game simply because of the Zenjidou Mario videos that were created. Mario World is an incredible game, of course, but it has nothing to do with those creative uses of the game. Wii Music doesn't have that quality behind it.

Still, I certainly can see why some folks might be able to extract something out of it. It just has a LOOONG way to go. The vision was not realized at all.

Agree almost 100% though I'd change Microsoft's presentation skills to a B+.

but sales can.. and Mario Galaxy sold about 8 million copies world wide.. which means its one of the biggest franchises out there

NSMBWii is about twice as big though

You're missing the point... Sure, Mario still sells and the Wii is selling too... to the casuals, not to the people who are giving out E3 conference grades. They don't care about Mario like they used too. I'm not saying Mario sucks or doesn't sell, I'm just saying that the journalists who report on things like E3, don't get excited as they used to about a new Mario, Zelda, or Metroid which is reflected in the E3 conference grades.

No, absolutely not true. All you need to do is listen to some E3 podcasts.

in terms of the impact it had on me Ubisoft>>>Nintendo>Sony>MS

Nintendo - Golden Sun DS, enough said. That with New Super Mario Wii, Mario Galaxy 2, Mario and Luigi DS, WarioWare DIY, and team Ninja's Metroid totally changed my perspective of Nintendo in less then an hour,

Sony - Trico, PSP Metal Gear, PSP Go, and uncharted 2. All of those amazed me and Sony really hyped me on their 2009/2010 line up. They had the most impressive conference, to bad most of it leaked so the impact was lost

MS - Just like with Sony, I'm unmoved by MS motion controller attempt. It will fail like with Sony's wands. SC:C totally sold me on the game, that was the only thing that really had an impact in me in their conference. It was the most enjoyable to watch though.

Ubisoft - James Cameron talking about Avatar, what more could you really want

tell me, what was the GOTY 2007?

I don't get people... last year Nintendo definetly had a horrible e3.

This year we get confirmation for the US on:
Super Mario Bros. Wii
Mario Galaxy 2
Metroid: Other M
Zelda Spirit Tracks
S&P 2
FF: Crystal Chronicals
Golden Sun
Mario and Luigi RPG
New Monolith RPG
Red Steel 2 (much improved)
No More Heros 2
Silent Hill
Resident Evil
Dead Space
Conduit

AND casual shit like Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit 2, EA Sports Motion + stuff, Murder Mystery stuff.....

The only things missing were a New Zelda Wii and Pikmin 3, F-Zero, Icarus and Star Fox.... but that makes something for next year.

How was this a bad e3 for nintendo? Seems like the best in YEARS......

Even next year has promise.. If Nintendo shows off Zelda from Anouma and possibly a Retro Icarus and a new Sega/Nintendo F-Zero and Miyamoto Pikmin 3... Nintendo will have another great hardcore year.

I have to repeat myself, but it's not that these sites are ignoring these marquee fantastic games like Mario Galaxy 2, or new franchises like The Conduit.

It's that the Wii has already reached the expanded market like no other machine can. Beyond this, no one here gives a crap about Wii Fit 2 or Wii Vitality.

Devote your whole conference to substantive games, and you'll get As on these meaningless grades.

Certainly MSNBC isn't likely to publish a story that says "Nintendo out of touch with the soccer Moms, moves back to hardcore!"

So Nintendo can afford to leave The Murder Mystery Club out of its conference. And yes, I think the same thing about the Hannah Montana PSP.

Microsoft: A-
Sony: A
Nintendo: C+

Microsoft: had a few games to show, Crackdown, Forza, and Halo, but otherwise a majority of their games I'm not even interested to own on Xbox. MW2, MGS:R, L4D2, Splinter Cell, Tony Hawk, and Rock Band are ALL multiplatform some on PS3, some on PC, and some on both! If they were trying to show off the Xbox for it's games they didn't do much to forward that on at all.

Natal is bleh IMO, I never want to play any of those ball games or painting simulators and I never want to spend time making friends with fake 3D children. The tech was relatively impressive but is pretty much useless for anyone who likes to sit on a couch and play games. The overall presentation of everything was pretty good though and even though almost none of their games had me excited for Xbox I'm interested in a lot of what they had to show.

Sony: Uncharted 2, God of War III, Last Guardian, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Gran Turismo 5, Gran Turismo PSP, Final Fantasy XIV, Soul Calibur PSP, and even Mod Racers then announcements of LBP PSP, Resident Evil PSP, and Agent exclusivity. Won't even get into mentioning the crazy amount going on PSN especially with PS1 classics (FFVII, MGS, etc). Sony had all the games going for it, so few of which will be on any other platform - Assassin's Creed 2 was really all they droned on about that has a presence on Xbox.

Their motion control is a mixed bag. I felt what they were showing was totally too early to be presenting since the wands seemed no where near finished design. Still it was technically much more impressive to me than Microsoft's Natal (Real 1:1 + Buttons > Body Gestures for games). Either way I don't see either this or Natal taking off but if I had to choose a winner it would be Sony in that regard.

Nintendo: I'll preface this by saying I don't have a Wii. The conference was horribly boring until the very very very end save for maybe the Mario Bros 4 announcement... which looks like a good $20 WiiWare game. Lots of stupid shit in the middle and then SMG2 and Metroid to blow everyone away.
