Gabe said:Honestly my main concern was to make sure people didn't avoid the game based on some of the poor reviews. I got something like four hundred mails after that post and 90% of them looked like this:
"Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Assassin's Creed. I was going to skip it based on the reviews. After reading your write up I rented it though. I've played about 10 hours and love it!"
So there you go, that's all I wanted.

ferricide said:that's a bit of an assumption.
when you review a popular game down, you tend to get self-conscious, in my experience. and self-conscious people tend to assume people are talking about them when they're not.
i'd love to hear the actual quote from the IGN guy, though it does seem like it's quite silly overall.
personally i just find this another mildly depressing chapter in the saga of "why video game reviews are broken" but what i think is broken about this is that everyone, IGN included, seems to be assuming that a review of a particular game is a definitive assessment of a game rather than one person's opinion.
i mean, if you had two friends who thought AC was good but one thought it had a lot of problems and one said "no, fuck that, it's really good!" that would not be weird. but when those two people turn out to be IGN's reviewer and gabe suddenly it's some sort of cyberpissingmatch and their opinions are held to be more meaningful than they are.
ho-hum.
SupahBlah said:I'd defend it because its pretty good.
I don't know why it gets the hate on here it does.
I think Hellgate is a bit of a weird exception. I mean, it's Bill fucking Roper's team. I think everyone was really hopeful, and from the builds they saw, it probably looked very promising (that's what I was reading everywhere, anyway), despite the bugs. It's just that none of those bugs got fixed. Though, I would like to see a comment on it, given how they felt about about the second Prince of Persia game.beat said:Yeah, but PA prides themselves on not accepting ads for products they wouldn't endorse.

Timedog said:This is fucking retarded. I can see them not supporting a super buggy unplayable game, but other than that it's subjective. "Oh no! We can't have our readers clicking on a link to a game that I PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE! What are we gonna do???"
Gabe said:Now I'm going to tell you how advertising on PA works. Every other game site out there takes ads for whatever game they can get. It doesn't matter if it's a pile of crap, if the publisher pays for the spot IGN or Gamespot or whoever will run the ad. That's fine but that's not how we do it and the news posts you just read are part of the reason why.
We were huge fans of the first Prince of Persia game so when Ubi came to us and wanted to run ads for the second we said yes. We had no idea they were going to completely fuck it over. So from then on we started demanding playable copies of games before we'd agree to advertising. No matter how early the build we tell the publishers that unless we can see it played in front of us or play it ourselves we won't run ads for it. Obviously a lot can still go wrong during development but we make the best decisions we can. We do not think of the ads you see on our page as ads. They are recommendations and we try extremely hard to insure that anything we put over there is worth your time.
Assassins Creed is decidedly great !!!praxis69 said:Not really, and the only people Gabe will ever dish ownage to will be his offspring. *shudder* Assassin's Creed isn't BAD. Timeshift is BAD. Assassin's Creed is decidedly average, a game for which that label couldn't be more appropriate.

Mifune said:PA has just about the least snarky game discussion out there. They say what they think and back it up. The snarkiness here is called for, since they are responding to an attack.
If it's snarky you're looking for, read 1UP's Top Ten Turkeys article or some of the posts made by VG journalists on this board.
PA can be snide in their comics, but those are like jokes, man.

Most other big industries seem a little bit less juvenile. Sure you have quite a few jackasses in the movie industry, but if actors behave like developers (Jaffe) or gaming "journalists", they tend to get ridiculed by the press.Gigglepoo said:What do you take seriously?

Troidal said:I dunno man, if I was a comic artist and wrote comments about a certain game on my own site, and some random guy (a reviewer in this case) suddenly attacks you, "Shut up and just draw your damn comics!", I think I'd put up a fight too. Plus the fact that Gabe wasn't talking about that particular reviewer anyway so it's not even being defensive about his own argument. IGN got pwned, pure and simple.
