Wait, Assassin's Creed is good?

Now I have to rent it and see.

Not really, and the only people Gabe will ever dish ownage to will be his offspring. *shudder* Assassin's Creed isn't BAD. Timeshift is BAD. Assassin's Creed is decidedly average, a game for which that label couldn't be more appropriate.

Honestly my main concern was to make sure people didn't avoid the game based on some of the poor reviews. I got something like four hundred mails after that post and 90% of them looked like this:

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Assassin's Creed. I was going to skip it based on the reviews. After reading your write up I rented it though. I've played about 10 hours and love it!"

So there you go, that's all I wanted.

I agree with this :) I never really understood why people put blind faith into reviews and if some game gets a bad score they say its off their list. Sure, i can understand that people use reviews as a "benchmark" to what game their going to buy since people cant afford to buy every game out there. But why not try the demo, rent it or borrow it before making up your mind? I hope they do it for their own sake atleast or else they can miss out on many great games. If you find the game interesting, dont ignore it just because of some bad reviews, try it out before you eventually buy it atleast :)

If Penny Arcade hadnt made the comic for the LE AC i wonder if he would be defending it so much

I'd defend it because its pretty good.

I don't know why it gets the hate on here it does.

that's a bit of an assumption.

when you review a popular game down, you tend to get self-conscious, in my experience. and self-conscious people tend to assume people are talking about them when they're not.

i'd love to hear the actual quote from the IGN guy, though it does seem like it's quite silly overall.

personally i just find this another mildly depressing chapter in the saga of "why video game reviews are broken" but what i think is broken about this is that everyone, IGN included, seems to be assuming that a review of a particular game is a definitive assessment of a game rather than one person's opinion.

i mean, if you had two friends who thought AC was good but one thought it had a lot of problems and one said "no, fuck that, it's really good!" that would not be weird. but when those two people turn out to be IGN's reviewer and gabe suddenly it's some sort of cyberpissingmatch and their opinions are held to be more meaningful than they are.

ho-hum.

I love you, you know.

It doesn't actually. If you look in the official thread majority of people enjoy it.

GAF seems to love ad hominem arguments, good job guys. I'm not on either side, but lol @ PA wins because of ad hominem arguments.

Yeah, but PA prides themselves on not accepting ads for products they wouldn't endorse.
I think Hellgate is a bit of a weird exception. I mean, it's Bill fucking Roper's team. I think everyone was really hopeful, and from the builds they saw, it probably looked very promising (that's what I was reading everywhere, anyway), despite the bugs. It's just that none of those bugs got fixed. Though, I would like to see a comment on it, given how they felt about about the second Prince of Persia game.

wheres that picture of PA's site with the ad for Hellgate london on it... and then the quote that they dont support bad games

This is fucking retarded. I can see them not supporting a super buggy unplayable game, but other than that it's subjective. "Oh no! We can't have our readers clicking on a link to a game that I PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE! What are we gonna do???"

IGN vs. PA

Couldn't have found a picture more fitting. PA represents everything objectionable about the current state of videogame discussion, a mix of snarky arrogance and snide condescension that they haven't earned the right to exhibit.

My thoughts exactly which is why I hate PA.

Perhaps PA actualy enjoys playing Hellgate? heaven forbid they like a game that hasnt gotten the best of reviews, gasp kinda like Assassins Creed :O

This is the best quote in Gabe's rant, though:

"No one actually pays any attention to IGN or their 7-10 review scale."

:lol

Now I'm going to tell you how advertising on PA works. Every other game site out there takes ads for whatever game they can get. It doesn't matter if it's a pile of crap, if the publisher pays for the spot IGN or Gamespot or whoever will run the ad. That's fine but that's not how we do it and the news posts you just read are part of the reason why.

We were huge fans of the first Prince of Persia game so when Ubi came to us and wanted to run ads for the second we said yes. We had no idea they were going to completely fuck it over. So from then on we started demanding playable copies of games before we'd agree to advertising. No matter how early the build we tell the publishers that unless we can see it played in front of us or play it ourselves we won't run ads for it. Obviously a lot can still go wrong during development but we make the best decisions we can. We do not think of the ads you see on our page as ads. They are recommendations and we try extremely hard to insure that anything we put over there is worth your time.

Shoddy gameplay is actually the least of Hellgate's problems. There's no possible way to positively endorse that heap.

Assassins Creed is decidedly great !!!

Yeah, that was really mature of both sides. Hard to take gaming seriously with that kind of representatives.

People actually visit IGN for the reviews? I only look for new media nowdays. And everytime I go there I'm reminded why.

PA has just about the least snarky game discussion out there. They say what they think and back it up. The snarkiness here is called for, since they are responding to an attack.

If it's snarky you're looking for, read 1UP's Top Ten Turkeys article or some of the posts made by VG journalists on this board.

PA can be snide in their comics, but those are like jokes, man.

k

why do people think just cuz its "their Opinion", Other people cant critisize it?!

urgh, i think Ass creed is pretty repetitive myself so there's another "opinion", its one of those games...

Well, perhaps I need to read past their columns? From what they've written, I'm reminded of the typical asshole one's bound to run into when reading a media create or NPD thread.

this is why game journalists shouldn't do podcasts. they have trouble saying anything relevant when they sit down and write the reviews they imagine are authoritative -- record them just shooting the shit and they'll inevitably reach depths of this sort

Man. What the hell is happening to game reviewers these days?

I've seen a lot of this egotistical behavior from them recently. Like their opinion is somehow above, oh, anyone else who plays videogames regularly and not simply earlier, therefor interesting.

Good for PA.

I dunno man, if I was a comic artist and wrote comments about a certain game on my own site, and some random guy (a reviewer in this case) suddenly attacks you, "Shut up and just draw your damn comics!", I think I'd put up a fight too. Plus the fact that Gabe wasn't talking about that particular reviewer anyway so it's not even being defensive about his own argument. IGN got pwned, pure and simple.

What do you take seriously?
Most other big industries seem a little bit less juvenile. Sure you have quite a few jackasses in the movie industry, but if actors behave like developers (Jaffe) or gaming "journalists", they tend to get ridiculed by the press.

I think Hellgate falls into both of the above categories...

But I think this is ridiculous on both IGN AND PA.... And after seeing the Hellgate ad on PA... i;m almost 100% sure that their opinion differs STRONGLY to the left of my own..

So for them to write up a whole statement endorsing AC just because of a 7 from 1up.. is retarded...

Then for IGN to retaliate with their comments was extra retarded...

And for Penny arcade to dignify IGN's crap... completes the retarded circle.

He called out the lower reviews, IGN was lower than 1up's the one he was claiming to be adressing.
