Gabe Newell bombshell quotes

If sony would have ditched the PS3 they would have lost me as a customer. Remember Sega ditching Saturn leaving their customers out to dry? One of the good things about sony is that they support their products (PSP for example). They may have given up on something that require things like disks, content specially made for it but it wasn't a Playstation brand that I know of (The playstation pocket?).

One of the reasons I buy Playstation is security in knowing it won't be dropped in 3 years (I don't know how fast Microsoft dropped Xbox but it also seemed short lived).

It doesn't take much to get the Sony haters riled up these days.

Amazing.

They didn't want the Ferrari of game consoles. Sony thought they did, and it cost them dearly.

65 million people did.

I guess those 67 million folks that bought a 360 didn't want that, either.

It also took down all the PSP profit and all the game profits they made during those years from a fairly sizable first party catalog.
Presuming of course they made profit on the PSP and the games. The first couple of years Sony had a couple of heavy losses on games.

Remember he said this at the beginning of the console cycle (about 2 months after launch of PS3), a time when the original Xbox was discontinued at a total of around 24 million units and the PS2 is still selling well. They created a console that halted the momentum of the Playstation brand and gave customers over to the 360. When an userbase goes from 24 million to 67 million its clear it is in demand, when the userbase goes from 150 mil to 65 mil I think it's ok to say people didn't want it (obviously this doesn't mean everyone, just the majority since the majority of people didnt stick with it or continue to build the brand like what happened from PS1 -> PS2).

65 mil may be close to 67 mil but in context to last console cycle and when the comments were made I think it's a pretty crazy gap and as many have said if you said this last gen you'd be laughed out of the thread.

lol just get out. You should probably educate yourself if you think selling 50 mil less units would have saved money for the division. This is literally in the running for dumbest shit I've read on GAF.

if sony loses money on every unit sold, and sony did loose a massive amount of money per unit at the beginning of the gen, selling a lot actually puts you in the red more than selling little.

loss leading can pay off in the long run but for the ps3 it didn't.

Considering the loss they took on many of the units they sold, your post might just take that award.

Obligatory.

Yes, I have a man-crush on Gabe.

Cell might be dead, but IBM said they were they were adding features from Cell into the Power series. Also the HSA idea is like Cell.

Full credit to StuBurns for bringing up another important Gabe Newell quote, back in 2009:

http://www.examiner.com/article/valve-let-fans-fund-game-development

What I think would be much better would be if the community could finance the games. In other words, ‘Hey, I really like this idea you have. I'll be an early investor in that and, as a result, at a later point I may make a return on that product, but I'll also get a copy of that game.'

So move financing from something that occurs between a publisher and a developer… Instead have it be something where funding is coming out of community for games and game concepts they really like.”

Three years later, Kickstarter happened.

It didn't help sales as the 360 version sold more. So Valve spent more time, money, and development resources on the PS3 but didn't see the sales to match it.

While this is true, you also have to start somewhere. There was already an established base on 360. There was none on PS3. Not sure how Counter Strike GO is doing on PSN, but it is possible those sales have an uptick because of the work Valve did on Portal 2. If future releases don't get a bump then I would agree the effort wasn't worth it. However if future game sales start increasing one after another than the initial investment paid off.

Us PC gamers are fickle, if Valve tried to Kickstarter Half-Life 3 the Internet would implode in a torrent of pure rage.

It'd still triple it's target in an hour, though.

I wish Valve actually did something, anything with the Wii. The tech was clearly aligned with Gabe's kind of thinking.

PS3 is only, what, 5 million behind the 360 in worldwide sales? They're in last place, but it's not like they completely got blown out of the water. For all intents and purposes, the 360 and PS3 are now on equal platforms.

Which is really really bad for Sony

If you really mean the Wii (instead of the Wii U) then, no. I don't think the Wii has enough power to even handle the Source engine (or a port of it) good enough.

The Wii U on the other hand...yeah, I would love to see something on that made by Valve.
I would even settle with a port of Left 4 Dead 2. Playing that game with the Wiimote would be so much goddamn fun.
The only requirement would be a button to turn around 180° on the spot.

Gabe had a missed opportunity, he predicted kickstarter but could've implemented such a system within Steam or something. And then companies/people could offer their ideas through Steam and people could donate and so on.

Bububu Xbox had a port of HL2!

Steam Greenlight is essentially the Steam variant of Kickstarter minus the financial risk.

Edit: The most glaring difference being that Steam users aren't funding a game's development and instead vote on which games they'd like to see on Steam, and developers can put up their games as early as concept phase. The actual funding, if any, still needs to be sourced, and as such I think we'll see quite a few games combining a Kickstarter to do just that and a Steam Greenlight profile in an attempt to guarantee release on the platform.

I remember when he said something about the PS3 to the media just after the Orange Box got an awful port.. Yeah, The reaction in the GAF thread about that was completely different, People said he was a 360 fanboy, just wanted valve to be bought by MS.

Yeah, not many people liked Gabe back then, He spoke alot of shit about console which was basically, stupid. He bitched about the 360 too.

But, For some fun, Here's some wiki edits from around that time..

"For some reason he seems to have an enormous grudge against Sony. Almost as enormous as his weight."

"He is insanely obese too. Oh and he hates the PLAYSTAYSHAN3."

"he is a stupid 360 loving douchbag"

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gabe_Newell&oldid=163810668
"It is rumored that, at one point, Gabe Newell mated with Chuck Norris to create an army of Gordon Freeman - Texan Ranger hybrids to conquer the universe. Legend has it only the power of the Cell can stop him, hence, his constant attempts to bring the console down before it can truly pose a threat to his obvious satanic connotations."

" Before his now famous Ps3 bashing, the Pig used his millions to purchase a wife and had disgusting pigletts."

Cancel PS3 and continue some PS2 support. Wait for people to get sick of Wii. Release a reworked PS3 with easy to develop for hardware with Move that blows the 360 away in terms of performance due to newer hardware.

Disaster.

Wow, never seen a sentence constructed from pure wrong before!

...... And now I have.
