Gaben confirms Source 2, Richochet 2 has started development, SOB canceled

Valve still make games?

I know, right? They haven't been involved in the development of any released game since... August? Wow.

I don't think they're even working on anything any more. Certainly not a game that's among the most played on Steam in its beta state.

I want to care

but

I don't.

SOB was, to me, the most interesting Valve title since Portal. I don't care about another Half-Life game... the series peaked at Opposing Force. Graphics and atmosphere aside, Half-Life 2 does nothing for me. It's not well-written, the gunplay isn't great, some of the levels are downright tedious, and the pacing's atrocious. Same with the follow-up Episodes.

I appreciate that other people like Half-Life 2, but I don't. I didn't really care for Portal 2 either, because, stellar writing aside, the puzzles didn't strike me as being nearly as intelligently designed, I didn't enjoy it how it altered GLaDOS' personality, and I really missed the flinging puzzles. Left 4 Dead was great, but the much more Valve-informed sequel had too many stupid design decisions (like those random endless streams of zombies bits which only existed for melee weapons, and melee weapons, which only existed because people demanded they exist--even though most melee players I play with are less effective than those with guns). I don't understand the appeal of games like DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2 at all, so I don't even know what to say there.

SOB was a space pirate game, which, to the best of my knowledge, was being worked on by guys like Doug Church (of ex-Looking Glass/Origin fame). That. That was interesting to me.

Source 2 would have to be goddamn mindblowing and have an amazing game to back it up, and I just don't see that happening. I see them wasting away their efforts on some psychologically manipulative F2P bullshit that I couldn't give a fuck about, and that makes me sad.

Left 4 Dead was great but short. Portal was awesome, but limited (and didn't let me play around with puzzles as much as I'd like). That leaves... uh... Half-Life 1. Only Valve games I love. :\

We don't have such info. Maybe, maybe not.

s'why I said "to the best of my knowledge."

I'd heard that somewhere, a long while ago, and, judging by the man's pedigree, it made sense. Apparently Valve has hired other people known for their work on immersive simulation (like Clint Hocking). I thought SOB was going to be the game they all worked on. Guess not. Meh. Wake me when Valve does something interesting.

What I'm hoping for is that this new engine will prove attractive enough that it could become a contender in the middleware scene. Source never really made it, but if Source 2 has a aggressively priced licensing, much more modern authoring tools, a competitive feature set, integration with Greenlight... It could be a big deal.

I'm surprised anybody at Valve wanted to work on another stale corridor shooter.

After games like Far Cry, Crysis, Mercs 2, Just Cause 2, Stalker series, L4D, Portals, TF2, etc., the traditional FPS is dead to me, at least as far as singpleplayer is concerned. Physics + grav gun gimmickry is the only thing that kept the previous installment of the series mildly interesting.

I remember gaben talking about how he wanted more widespread use of their next engine before, which obviously everyone wants, but that got me thinking.

Why didn't more companies use the source engine? For an engine that is fairly old, it was used to create some fairly fantastic looking games.

From what we've heard the tools are terrible and they've been working hard on fixing them.

I don't think there's any one game I'm more looking forward to than Half Life 3. Even as I think back, to some of my favourite games I'd love to see a sequel to, Half Life 3 is top of the pile.

RIP Valve.

Same here.

I know it's become sort of a meme/joke where people freak out over any news what with "HL3 confirmed" and shit. But seriously, HL1 and HL2 (plus episodes) are some of my favorite games of all time. HL3 is my most anticipated game bar none.

I think I explained what I find wrong with it rather articulately. I believe the reason Valve is not focusing on good games people want like HL3 is because Dota 2 can make them more money in shitty cosmetics. I find that disappointing, but I guess it's a sign of the times.

I have no problem with them in TF2 because TF2 wasn't made to be milk money out of the community with ungenerous profit splits. But Dota seems to be.

WTF are you even talking about?

I've said it before, but this is basically me. I get super hyped for the occasional big game in a franchise I love, or one that looks interesting, but I'm in a perpetual state of hype for the next Half-Life.

It's the singularity of hype for me. There is no other game I want more, and I can say that comfortably. I cannot fathom what will come after, if an 'after' is even possible.

Do you think HL3 could even live up to your expectations at this point?

Do you think HL3 could even live up to your expectations at this point?

Yes, because my only expectation is that I enjoy the game as much as I have the entire series. It's not like I expect the game to age like wine the longer it is in developer, wishing it to meet some vague, indescribable standard of enjoyment based on how long it's in development. I don't expect it to be more revolutionary or more fun as time goes by.

My expectations now are almost identical to my expectations post-Episode 2. I want a Half-Life game that meets the same standard of quality and enjoyment I've derived from the series so far. Each episode has left me in awe at the set pieces, engaged in the encounters, lost in the game world, enthralled by the story, and ascended into a world of pure gaming bliss. That's what I want, as it's what I've gotten from the series.

The only shaped expectation I have is the size of the game. I'm expecting Episode 3 to essentially be Half-Life 3 in scope, and I'd probably be a bit disappointed if it turned out Episode 3 was indeed just one episode in length. If it still met the above standards then I doubt I'd care in the end, because I got the Half-Life I wanted, but I do want Valve to throw themselves into a full length product with this game.

I would have sacrificed Half-Life 3, 4 and 5 for a Valve space pirate game.

Well, such is life, and I guess I'm in the minority here. Hoping for Star Citizen, Elite and the Notch game to be good (some hope for X Rebirth too).

I just wanted to come in here and say anyone who think the next Half Life Game is going to be called Half Life 2:Episode 3 has to be high on drugs.

Seriously after the years of waiting why would they call it that?
Kinda takes away from the game being the next in the series and being on a new engine.

I know some arguments stemmed from "Well the next game is still Half Life 2's story".
I guess that's true but at the same time just about every sequel is still in the same story.
We didn't call Halo 3 Halo 2 Part 2 (Especially after the ending in 2).

We can debate this forever but i still stand that when it's finally revealed it's going to be called half life 3.

Yeah that seems fair enough. I'm on the same page as that. If "HL3" is only the same length of HL2-2 then that would be pretty disappointing. Otherwise it'll probably live up to my expectations.

I feel it would be pretty hard to put out the next Half-Life as an episodic type game given that they also release on consoles these days.

I mean, if they wait long enough I guess they could do it as a digital $20 product for next-gen, but I can't really envision this is their strategy given that they haven't released the game yet, but were willing to release their 2008 era concept art (implying whatever Episode 3 was is now canceled in favor of something else).

Isn't the Portal 2 level creator essentially Hammer with a user friendly UI?

It's a highly-simplified level creator for a specific game. It's not as complex as Hammer.

I'm pretty sure it's still Hammer at the core though.

No it just outputs files that can be opened in Hammer, VMFs, which are just text files that define objects like brushes and entities in the world. Portal 2's level creator basically adds cubes, subtracts cubes, places entities and adds some simple entity interaction - it's all prefabbed.

I missed the part about easier content creation tools. It'd be cool if they got the bar of entry pretty low on that. With Steam Workshop, they could really take user content to the next level.
