GAF, can we agree that fishing minigames suck?

Suikoden V's was amazing. None of the "Stand here and wait, then press X really fast" nonsense, you go out on a lake and chase the fish around in a boat.

Speaking of which we need a sequel to this....NOW

EDIT: Loved this game as a kid...I have no idea how it ended up in our house

The Fisherman's Bait games are a lot of fun. Saw the coin-op first, then went and bought the PlayStation games later. Very arcadey, like SEGA Bass Fishing, but for an arcade rat like me? That's quite the catch.

I have a confession to make:

I didn't hate Big the Cat or his fishing sections of Sonic Adventure.

Phew. That's a weight lifted. Been carrying that for 14 years.

I should also mention that I disagree with most everything you said at the start. My fishing experiences in life have led me to believe that there are few things I'd rather do in the world than not fish. I'm not sure if this is related to my increased tolerance for Big, like there's some kind of weird inverse relationship between liking real fishing and liking dumb mascot fishing sections of games.
I hate fishing and I'm okay with Big, so I don't think the connection exists.

Although the reason I hate fishing is because I had a really nasty experience with casting a hook as a kid that landed someone in the emergency room.

Jak and Daxter's fishing mini game was a pain in the arse. You have to catch 200lbs of fish to continue, which sounds easy enough but they're fast and you have to avoid the bad fish. Not only that but you're not allowed to miss many. The PS2 and PS3 versions gave me a lot of bother due to only being able to use the left analog stick to control the net; My (and presumably everyone else's) left thumb is used to making up & down movements while my right thumb is more comfortable with lefts & rights. The vita version remedied this by allowing you to guide the net with the touchscreen.

The fishing in the Yakuza games, on the other hand is actually pretty fun, I had no problems with it.

While I love fishing in games that offer it and aren't fishing games(Yakuza, Zelda, FFXI, Animal Crossing) I would say not all fishing games can be fun, most are badly implemented with shotty hit-detection, controller issues or are just straight up bad with generic fish to catch.

I always love when you can catch crazy stuff like great white sharks and coelacanth rather than generic "bass" or something lame like that.

Or even Japanese comedians pretending to be a zombie

I like them in nearly any game I come across them.

But they're nothing compared to a game that's dedicated to doing it well, like Fishing Resort.

Surprised no one mentioned Pokemon. I guess we all hate it in those games. I couldn't grasp how to even catch something at first in Emerald.

With Pokémon, it's so automatic that it doesn't feel like a minigame.

It seems that I'm in the minority regarding my original opinion, then. That's alright, though, because I was reminded of all the awesome fishing minigames instead.

I always had a soft spot for the one in Link's Awakening.

Persona 4 did them okay as I recall. Keep it short and simple.

I think for a lot of us those Big the Cat levels Sonic Adventure forced you to do to finish the game properly were just so fucking awful that they've tainted the fishing minigame forever though.

Fuck Big the Cat and fuck Froggy even more.

This...this made me hate fishing mini-games...and this...this thing made me smash a PS3 controller against my wall. Most frustrating thing ever.

Getting some strange flashbacks to the Ordon Village segment in Twilight Princess.
Jesus that was the absolute worst.

And dear god Nier's fishing minigame, I completely blocked that out.

Does having a bad fishing segment come down to not explaining the mechanics clearly or correctly?
Because there are a lot of examples in this thread of GREAT fishing minigames, obviously the Ocarina of Time minigame was fantastic.

I agree but that could also go for any kind of mini game where there is also a whole game dedicated to that activity. Of course the mini game in game A is going to suck compared to the game B which only does that one thing.
