GAF, Help Me Decide: Xbox One X or Switch

As a console gamer, I can't see myself not owning all three consoles.

I'd be missing out on Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid and Pokemon on the Switch (amongst others).

I'd be missing out on Spider-Man, God of War and The Last of Us 2 on the PS4 Pro (amongst others).

I'd be missing out on Sea of Thieves, Ori 2 and Forza Horizon 4 on the Xbox One X (amongst others).

But that's just because all platforms cater to my tastes.

Edit: I can fully understand why some would choose to have one or two consoles because of the lack of time/money, or a PC that replaces the Xbox.

Switch, of course. It's not even close.

PS4 Pro is the perfect base for it, literally.

Never buy a system for one or two games. That switch will be a dust magnet in no time.

Yet, if those few games are a Zelda, Mario and Metroid game, that's worth the price to me. Even if it gathers dust between them. I don't have to use it all the time. I play other consoles too.

... Exclusives?

Also, I'd say Switch if you have a PS4P. If a normal Xbox 1 never interested you, a 1X probably wont change much, since the exclusives wont really be anything new.

PS4P+Switch is probably the best combo period, IMO. Xbox 1 is superior in entertainment, but not really gaming, IMO. XB1 or XB1X for that matter.

Why do you need a Pro for exclusives? You don’t. The base PS4 with HDR is fine. The One X is best equipped to take advantage of an all out 4K set up and will have the best multiplatfrom titles. The Pro isn’t the 4K machine it needs to be.

If you're looking to getting a console right now, I would look at what it has to offer right now and not future releases. Anything can happen in 2018 and we don't even know much what MS, Sony or Nintendo is offering.

Fan-boys of all platforms will tell you that the other platform's exclusives suck or that they overlap with their preferred platform exclusives, don't listen to them and just buy the console you that jives with you the best.

How do you know that the differences won't be big, have you played future games on both PS4Pro and XB1X? Your delusion is funny, the XB1 is superior in entertainment but not gaming.

Best advice.

Go to Best Buy or something, grab an Xbox One controller and a Switch controller, carry them around for a half and hour while you check out other stuff in the store and by the time you're ready to leave your gut will tell you whats best in life right now/

Thank you all so much for your opinions, they have all been really helpful!

I took a nice long walk with my dog just now, thought about it, came home, and made a decision. Ordered a Switch Neon Blue/Red, Zelda, Pro Controller, and screen protectors. Cancelled the One X order.

Thank you all again! I didn't expect this level of advice and help, being this is the first time I made a thread on GAF. Awesome community here <3

Great decision. By the time you’re done with Zelda, Odyssey will be landing.

Why would you sell something for a decent loss, buy basically the same thing again, then buy a 500$ machine? That did what your old half gen console did but a little worse? Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through. Ignoring rebuying all 3rd party games you'd have to migrate to the X1X if you want it to be fully taken advantage of.

Also, lol at being attacked for saying XB1 in general is worse for gaming because it lacks exclusives. Sorry but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Exclusives make the console IMO. You can argue semantics with me all you want, but that's my opinion.

And I don't even own a PS4 or PS4P.

Don’t forget about ARMS, MK8D, Splatoon 2, & Mario + Rabbids. Throw in Sonic Mania (if you didn’t get it on PS4 already) & a pre-order for Super Mario Odyssey for good measure. Pre-order Xenoblade 2 as well if you’re into JRPGs.

Great decision. Zelda, Mario, Mario+Rabbids, and Xenoblade 2 make for a GOAT first year.

Good decision, have fun. Even if you think it's not your thing, try out Mario + Rabbids. Many consider it one of the biggest surprises this year and for me it's even goty material.

The Switch. BoTW is incredible, and Mario will be releasing in just a few weeks.

The Switch pairs very well with the PS4.

Edit: good choice OP.

Do this if you can. Best of all worlds. Wait until Black Friday, maybe? Should be some good deals on One S.

"So, I currently own a PS4 Pro and 4K TV."

I don't think they'd want an S for all that 4k gaming excitement, if that's what a primary motivator is, anyways.

Oh niiiiice! Seems like you ended up getting the works with it too, so have fun!

I'm an Xbox/Nintendo guy and both are pretty solid options at this point. I love my Switch to death, but just know that you'all be playing the far inferior ports on it in exchange for portability. IMO though, Nintendo makes some of the best games and of course you can only play those on Switch.

Since you already have a PS4 Pro, your games are already looking good on your TV, but the X will take it to the next level. I'm also a huge fan of the Xbox Live services (Looking for Group, Clubs, being able to change my gamertag, etc), I think the controller is infinitely better than the DS4, and even though there are fewer exclusives, I still think they're super cool and interesting (Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown, Recore, PUBG, Sunset Overdrive, etc).

If you're looking for a compliment system to your Pro, I'd say go with Switch but if you're looking for another way to justify and use the whole power of your 4K tv, get the X.

Because you already own a PS4 you should 10000% get a Switch. It's the most sensible option if your one priority is playing as many good games as possible. Most good games on Xbox will appear on PS4. Switch throughout its life will have tons of good games you won't be able to get on any console.

Do you not have a PC capable enough to run Cuphead? I would have said Switch without a second thought, but this game, man ...

Get the One X, play Cuphead, sell it, get a Switch? : D

I dont care for portability so i use my switch as a home console, Zelda is fantastic but there's nothing substantial until Mario Odyssey (Mario Kart seems to be good but its not for SP gaming?). These are fantastic games but i dont expect to play any games on it between these heavey hitters, so after Mario there's Metriod Prime which is perhaps a year away. Whereas the next year is filled with excellent multplats in between MS console exclusives that will really push your entertainment setup. As you value fidelity i say get an Xbox X.

Even the S looks pretty nice on a 4k screen plus they get a pretty cheap 4k Blu Ray player.

One hand talks about pretty 4k graphics goes out and buys a switch, I doubt high end graphics are a driving force.

For a meaty sp game you can't miss out on Mario + Rabbids, even if you hate Rabbids and/or turn based strategy. I don't usually play anything in that genre yet M+R had me hooked for 50 hours. Got 100% simply because I couldn't get enough.

You need to decide this for yourself.

- Switch has portability and Nintendo games.

- Xbox X has 4k, better performance, and a way WAY larger library that includes BC 360 games.

4K graphics mean nothing if the games aren't any fun. And a large library is irrelevant if the games once again aren't fun.

The Nintendo Switch has been out 6 months and strings to it's bow include Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario v Rabbids, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Sonic Mania and Splatoon 2, with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and, oh, Super Mario Odyssey this year too.

Hell yes.

And I don't even own a PS4 or PS4P.

I can flip a PS4 Pro on Craigslist with like 2 no worth games for $350 taking a $50 hit. Snag a Switch easily with $25 left over. Keep the One X preorder then snag a PS4 again on Black Friday.

Also the exclusives compliment the console. The console is made by its community, its system features, and its 3rd Party support. The Xbox One has all 3 of those and they are comparable if not rivaling to the PS4. The exclusives are just icing. If the cake isn’t already good the icing isn’t gonna do shit.

They’d get a 4K Blu-ray player.

Let’s not pretend that the premium console that is the Pro shouldn’t get docked for not already having that. Premium implies not being price conscious like they were.

You have no reason to get the Xbox One X over a Nintendo Switch since you can play all the multiplatform games on your PS4. Considering you can spend $500 on the Switch and some games instead seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me if you can only choose one right now.

Good choice. I'm in a similar position and would choose the Switch as well.

If you change your mind in the future, there's no problem. Maybe X1X builds up a hefty catalog of exclusives over time; maybe the multiplat differences are so significant that you feel you need one; maybe the Switch library runs out of gas after the first year. Who knows. You can always trade-in the Switch at that point and buy an X1X. Nintendo consoles hold their value pretty well. And in the meantime, you get a chance to enjoy Zelda, Mario, etc.

Happy you've decided. Hope you can restrain yourself come November 7th ;)

Unless the Xbox exclusives are that important you already have the Pro to handle 3rd party titles.

Make the Switch.

I'd be missing out on Sea of Thieves, Ori 2 and Forza Horizon 4 on the Xbox One X (amongst others).

Personally I think Sea of Thieves looks boring as hell, but then I hate sailing in games and without dedicated friends to play with routinely I don't see it having lasting appeal.

Forza is great but man, Forza Horizon 3 alone would be enough to do me the whole generation, I could never keep up with the yearly Forza cycle.

You realize you will see every game in 1080p 4K as your output right?

4K movies, maybe, and if interested in the XBO games. I personally would have just went for Switch, though.

Awesome! You're going to enjoy the Switch!

Switch
or XOX

I have an XOX pre-ordered, but I think I’ll end up picking up a Switch instead. I’m leaning 70%-30% for the Switch.

1) I think the best aspects of the Switch are the portability and Nintendo titles. Another plus is that I'm trying a lot of new games that I otherwise wouldn't be interested in, like Mario + Rabbids (even though I'm a fan of XCOM). I'm looking forward to digging into Odyssey when that launches in a few weeks and Xenoblade, which will be my first Xeno game since Xenogears on PS1.

2) I was totally invested in the Xbox ecosystem until late last gen and got my One S when it launched in 2016. Honestly, I haven't really played a lot of exclusives on it outside of Forza Horizon 3 (fantastic game and the expansions are amazing) and Gears 4. Most of my "core console" playing is on my PS4.

Some insight into my gaming habits is that I own a pretty beefy PC and I share a TV with someone, so most of my gaming is done around that. Switch and PC is where I spend most of my gaming time, with the exceptions being PS4 exclusives like Yakuza and Nioh, or playing Destiny online with friends.

EDIT: Should have started reading the second page before replying. Congrats on your new Switch purchase. Time to start building up that library with great games like the aforementioned Mario + Rabbids and Golf Story. I'd also recommend Splatoon 2 and Steamworld Dig 2.
