GAF, help me get into MGS!

Okay, I was thinking about getting MGS3 (because it's pretty cheap now) when I suddenly remembered that I didn't like MGS.

Hey, put that e-knife away!

Obviously this is not an anti MGS thread. I bought Twin Snakes for GC and bizarrely enough I'm looking forward to MGS4. I tried four times (with months in between) to get into Twin Snakes. I really don't know why but I don't understand this game. I was never sure what I was supposed to do and I don't remember how I eventually got into that elevator. Each time I only played for about an hour. I played through every Splinter Cell but the stealth in Twin Snakes gave me headaches. I got caught constantly and it freaked me out so much that I stopped playing. To this day I don't understand how to stay undetected or how to handle that first situation correctly.

So I was thinking about trying it AGAIN now! Any advice on what I should do in order not to end up with a nervous breakdown? Or should I just try to get into MGS3 first?

I have a feeling that part of your anxiety may be due to the camera, you can't control it or see in front of you. If that's the case I would suggest springing for MGS3: Subsistence. It has an adjustable Splinter-Cell-esqe camera so you can see where you're going.

Never sure what you were supposed to do? Talk to Campbell on codec a couple times, and he'll spell out your objective in retardedly obvious detail.

How can you stay undetected? Don't be seen... I mean, come on: in the first area, there are a bunch of square boxes and a couple guards. Put these boxes in between you and the guards' 10 ft line of sight, and you're home free.

It could very well be that Metal Gear Solid simply isn't for you. Best of luck in your attempt, but if it doesn't work out, don't be discouraged. You're certainly not alone.

Heard about that. But navigating through that first scene in TS shouldn't be so difficult, right? I can easily go through most of Splinter Cell's missions without getting seen or shooting anyone. I am convinced that I'm doing something wrong. I even read some guides but they're all like "yeah, just walk to the elevator, don't get caught".

See, that's where I failed :lol

Yeah, but I find it strange. If I had a real good reason to dislike it I wouldn't mind. I had no problems hating PDZ after playing it for the same amount of time, because I can clearly see why I dislike it...

You do have the radar turned on, right?

Don't come to Sony Age for psychological game therapy. You can't fit a square peg into a round hole. Kojima games are not for everyone.

Can you turn it OFF?

Yeah, well, why does Kojima not make a game for me then? :(

I've been told that I should write strategy guides. "Avoid getting hit by the enemy to beat the game, dipshit." It's a gift, what can I say?
i like your style

The very first room was one of the most difficult rooms to pass in MGS for me. Since you probably don't have your tranq gun yet, but if you do, use it. Instead, you will have to rely on some neck breaking to put guards out of commision. Yes, I know you don't have to kill the guards to get through, but it's easier.

To do, as instuctions in the manual are awful, sneak up behind a guard by just running behind him, not stepping on noisy grates or puddles. Then, WITHOUT PRESSING A DIRECTION, and not having a weapon equipped, press the shoot button (square on ps2, I think its b on Gamecube). Now you can mash wildly on the shoot button to crack some necks, or just a bit, to knock them unconscience, but be warned, they wake up pretty fast. Anyways, drag to body to a location where other guards won't spot it.

For the elevator, just use the action button (trangle or Y), then go to a secluded spot and wait for the elevator to appear. I believe more guards show up. But just avoid them by watching their movement, or kill them, and get on.

If you do get seen, you want to eliminate as few guards as possible, as your objective is to find a hiding spot. Basically, kill the witnesses, then hide.

Tip of the Day: The blue cones on the radar represent the guard's field of view. Even if you're just outside the cone, the guard can be faced directly toward you and only 4 meters away and he still can't see you. So far for genomically enhanced elite soldiers.

Wait for subsistence and see if the 3rd person camera helps.

Yeah, wait for the new camera. That should change some things. Also, the inclusion of an online mode should make the game more interesting for you

Wow, did you just... did you just write an honest reply with real advice that makes perfect sense? SWOOSH. I think you just blew my mind. Thanks. :)

You're also overwhelming yourself, if you don't know where you should be going or how you ended up where you did. Your best bet is to just digest one room at a time, look at it like a puzzle instead, and plot your path to the exit. You shouldn't bother trying to keep people alive if you're already stressed, but the game will punish you for drawing attention. Get good at sniping. :P

My terrible little secret is that I only enjoy playing through the MGS games for the crazy cinematics and characters. It's like watching anime, but with more effort. I just can't get past how robotic and unorganic the controls feel. Some boss fights are pretty fun though - you definitely can't beat the first time you fought Psycho Mantis :)

Kudos to you for giving MGS another shot. You should seriously play MGS3 or MGS3:S sometime soon. Timeline-wise, 3 comes first, then 1 and then 2 (and then eventually 4) but if you do choose to complete 3 first, you may think less of the others by comparison.

3 has one of the best endings in gaming, and really the whole package is top-notch, with the possible exception of the camera, which Subsistence takes care of. GAMEPLAY, story, cinematics, VA, graphics, music, all of it. Please play it.

Does Twin Snakes have any VR missions? I went through all the VR missions in the PSX version before I started the regular game, and I think it helped a ton.

Haha, I've heard that one before.

I agree that the controls feel a little robotic but that's nothing that would ruin the game for me. I played through Bart Vs. The Space Mutants :lol

Yeah, if I really do manage to get into Twin Snakes now I will definitely finish it before starting MGS3. I probably couldn't go back otherwise.

Don't know anything about these. I don't think they are in TS. Can you elaborate?

Nothing against the series, I just always find it an uncomfortable learning curve each time I pick up a MGS game. It usually takes me a good hour or two to finally start getting a grip on the controls, where a game like Splinter Cell just feels more natural from the get-go. I still have MGS3 sitting on the shelf and I'm only 4-5 hours into it, so I'll work up the nerve eventually and probably end up loving it.

It's kind of like Resident Evil - great series, even with the wonky controls. I'm hoping MGS4 pulls a RE4 in that aspect :D

I feel the same about SC. But I will definitely give Twin Snakes another chance and I'll bump this thread again and report back :D
