GAF, How do you handle yellow lights?

I've been driving for a few years now and I've just been wondering.
How far away from the light do you personally have to be before you treat it as a red?

In California if you get into the intersection on a yellow, you're golden. So if I'm sure I'll be in the intersection before it hits red, chances are I'm going in.

I stop. Many years ago, I approached a yellow, and there was a guy right behind me, who looked to me like he had no intention to stop, so I drove through it as it turned red. That guy did stop, and a cop pulled me over for it.

Now I just stop.

Depends on how close I am to it, if I know there's no chance I'll make it I'll stop.

One of my biggest driving pet peeves is being stuck behind someone driving slow, up until the point that the light we are approaching turns yellow, at which point Slowpoke Rodriguez speeds up to make it through the light leaving you behind to stop and sit and wait. Like thanks a lot jackass, if you had been going just a little bit faster both of us could've made the light, maybe even a car or two behind us.

Cameras everywhere and fast yellows mean you don't mess with yellow lights here in NYC. Yellow is as good as red.

Shout out to whoever came up with this idea. They did the lord's work with that invention. I can always tell when the light is about to change to yellow.

If it's yellow and I'm not slamming on my brakes, slow down.

If I have to slam on my brakes and it's that awkward "technically it'll be red by the time you get through but otherwise you're gonna slam on your brakes." I hope there's no cop nearby and go on through. Sometimes even speed up so I get through as fast as I can.

Probably does not look great from an outsider perspective, but having been almost hit by people because I hit the brakes full stop on an awkward yellow light- I'd rather not be hit.

As a corollary, it's just as bad when the light uses a motion sensor and the guy in front of you doesn't move when it turns green, causing it to turn yellow by the time he finally gets to it, and then red when you get to it.

Around here, they can usually be timed to 4 seconds before they go red. So through that, how close I am, and if there's a cop.

Also, it was trained around here that if the light is yellow at the last point you can see it, you're fine. If you see it turn red, you ran the red.

Where I live, charging through a yellow light means that you'll usually just get held up at the red light a block down.

...though I usually just use the crosswalk timers to adjust my speed accordingly.

The problem with this is that there are people who really push it trying to beat the light, and there are times when people are making a left who end up getting hit, instead of waiting to turn.

Depending on my mood I have three reactions...

i. The light just turned yellow, I need to slow down and bring the car to a halt.

ii. The light just turned yellow, but I don't have enough room to stop safely. I'll just maintain my speed and keep going.

iii. *rolls eyes* yeah...ok. vvvvrrrrrrRROOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

yellow means go faster

Hate the idiots that slam on their brakes in front of you when it JUST turned yellow. They're almost as bad as sub-speed limit people in the left lane.

I only go through a yellow light if I can make it going at my current speed.

If not, I stop.

There has been some times where it has been 50/50 though causing a tough situation haha

Generally, if I'm certain I can get my car fully across the line by the time the light turns red and I'm not going to exceed the speed limit by 15km/h, I'll go for it.

I dunno about you but I was taught that yellow (or amber) means stop if it's safe, otherwise continue through. At least on paper. If the guy behind you doesn't look like he's intending on stopping on for some reason a tractor trailer is riding your bumper, you shouldn't be in the wrong for blowing past it or as it's turning red. Maybe it's different in other jurisdictions or it's up to you to challenge it and I'm guessing most people don't know to make that argument.
