Gaf, how do you manage living with heat?

As I live in Florida, dat central air conditioning.

Thinking about life without AC here is miserable. There was a time back in 2004(?) when 2 hurricanes came almost back to back and knocked our power out for a week at a time. The first time we stayed and it was miserable. The humidity is what really sucked, not the heat. No fans, no lights, just you and the bugs.

Second time we left as soon as the storm was over.
Oh yeah. 2004 was Charley + some other ones I can't remember the name of. IIRC we got our power back on after a few days and that was miserable enough. I know some friends who were out of power for weeks and I don't know how they managed. The heat + the humidity without even as much as a fan is devastating.

Anyway, it's basically AC 24/7 here, and even then, we still keep it relatively high - around 78 or so on the hot days - so it doesn't cost a billion dollars a month in electricity. Still too warm IMO particularly since I spend a lot of time in front of my desktop which heats up the surrounding area...

I don't, I have AC and always will. Life without central air would be miserable. We have 3 AC units connected to the house/hvac system, one for each floor and a backup unit. Dead silent too which is nice.

1. AC
2. If outside find water. Pools/sprinklers/a bird bath. Whatever it takes.
3. 2 showers per day. At the end of your shower turn it to cool/cold water
4. Fans to go along with the AC
5. Ice. You can just freeze water or use those cooling gel pad things.

If you do not have A/C:
set up camp in the basement
use fans
use ice
drink water
try to stay relaxed and wait for it to pass

Well shit. You can do what I did when I was dirt broke and wear a damp shirt. Works well enough when you're sitting in front of a fan.

Edit: or go naked and have a water spray loaded with ice.
A damp shirt and a fan... you just blew my mind... seriously. I'm trying this next week when we'll be having 3+ days of 100+F.

You don't need an AC during the day unless it is scorching. Just get a fan, stay hydrated and take an extra shower.

But it gets real iffy trying to sleep at night without AC. I did it when I was in my 20s but I can't deal with it any more.

You will be fine.

Like, I live in a city where 32c/90f is normal and its extremely rare to see AC in houses... granted, most houses seem to be build in a way they can be cool and we have a lot of trees.

tanning and outdoor activity, get that vitamin d, that bronze and the sun / heat will make you tired enough that you will be able to sleep regardless of how miserably hot it is

the heat doesn't bother me that much though unless it is a very humid heat, that is awful

Dehumidifier
Central air
Back up portable AC unit
Know how to make a swamp cooler
Big ceiling fans
Double pane windows or put that plastic window insulation stuff up on the Windows you don't need to open.

Actually fans, even large ceiling fans, are extremely energy efficient. Along with good insulation, like dual pane windows, you can really cool the house down.

I live in the Seattle area and if it goes above 80 I hate life. I just leave the windows open at night, close them and the shades during the day, have a huge ass box fan and hope that's enough.

Living without AC in 2017 seems nuts to me but I'm in TX and I guess everyone would die if we didn't have AC in our 100+ summers.

To answer the OP, I stay inside... with the AC. If I were you I'd just go ahead and get an AC unit even if it's portable and not hooked up to central air.

We have a record high temperature for my city today, it's blazing hot and this is in the PCNW. I'm over here dying since I dont have AC in my house, it is insanely cold here in the winters and the summer is usually very mellow. We pulled out all of our fans and it's just too dang much.

How do you manage the heat without AC?

You get AC.

I'm trying to think up a battle plan for this summer after the unbearable heat last year. Hoping to get some better curtains for during daylight and pick up a couple box fans to keep the air moving

Feudally

It's not the heat, it's the sweat

then it's the humidity

And with air pollution just give up forever

This is supposed to be the future, fashion industry better get chilled jumpsuits and AC airtight helmets in vogue already, fuck pls for the sake of global warming

Hey, I got hit by those hurricanes, too. Same deal. We didn't have a car either so there was no "drive somewhere, blast AC, find respite." It was so augh.

When I lived in Arkansas, I remember going from an air conditioned house, to an air conditioned car, to an air conditioned job. Just the relatively short amount of time I was actually out in the summer heat left a lifelong impression on me. Shit was hot. If you hung your arm out the window while you were driving it felt like someone was holding a hair dryer about 6 inches from your arm. There was no real humidity to worry about, just straight up heat.

It's usually never all that hot around where I live but I've heard about people getting ac's here which I find to be strange, if I live long enough I could find myself in the same situation I guess, at least during the summer.

The idea of an ac in my own room is very very strange to me, it makes me feel like that I somehow shouldn't even live in this region because the climate would be unbearable without it.

70F is light sweatshirt level

You're insane. Sweatshirts are for 5C and below. 20C and above is summer wear.

Americans with their electricity hungry AC units. I would wish for every person who says that they love the summer to have their precious AC units taken away from them and see how they like it then.

As to the original question: I use a fan, sit in the dark, and try to distract myself from the heat by focusing on my hatred of sunlovers.

I hate summer so God damned much.

Buy an AC.

If you can't then buy a fan, drink water, eat cold food, eat refreshing fruits, wear loose clothes.

nah, sweatshirt in 70°F is nice. I have a light hoodie, which is kinda just a long sleeve shirt with a hood, but I wear that with a t-shirt underneath until it hits about 80. Then just long sleeve's and t-shirts above that. Over 100 mostly just t-shirts though. I also don't own shorts.

You say you hate summer, but an A/C unit would make your life better. They're worth it.

I grew up with it in Australia so I'm just used to it. Can get up to 40 degrees celcius here. (104F) Never had AC, just fans, windows and lots of water.

I live in AZ, so A/C is kinda essential. I wouldn't be able to live without it. I overheat very easily. I just can't deal with warm temperatures.

Home air conditioning units are so rare in the UK I would hazard a guess that less than 3% of homes have them. Because our country gets hot for about 2 weeks in the year it's never considered worth it, unlike the US which I'm led to believe is mostly savannah and blasted desert.

Also aren't they electricity hogs?

Also you're crazy. I've been wearing nothing over my shirt the past few weeks as it's been too warm to make it a good idea (between 10-25C).

In the day, staying hydrated and keeping a fan on you whenever possible helps a lot. At night, the same good fan plus some thin sheets, as well as boxers/shorts to sleep in become your best friend. Also, open windows if possible. Day and night. Moving hot air is better than stuffy warm air.

We try not to turn on the AC too much until June when temps average out in the low 90's. Then yeah, it becomes mostly AC. The house gets kind of.. stale(?), though. If I didn't cycle as much as I do, I'd go nuts from not getting any fresh air.
