GAF, I have FLEAS! Not bees. Fleas. Help me please.

Yep, I work in veterinary field and that is the most common flea in both dogs and cats.

The most common tell of fleas is by seeing "flea dirt" which looks like little black dots. This is actually flea shit and many young fleas eat it. If you find any on your mattress or surfaces then you know fleas have been there.

EDIT: And to add on that vacuum part.

PLEASE VACCUUM your car and even places where the fleas can hide easily. Some may hitch a ride on your coat/jacket/pants and drop off in these locations... and it takes just two fleas to make 250,000. Spray some of that stuff that kills pre-adult and adult fleas after vacuuming in all sorts of areas as well to double up.

Housemate brought in a chair from outside. It had fleas on it. His room which is now right next to mine is now infested. I have bites on my legs. I am starting to notice some in my room and throughout the house.

We have no pets. The fleas came from the chair.

We have used a flea bomb in his room and in the house itself. He has been vacuuming and spraying flee spray. They will not die.

We are debating calling an exterminator. Do "natural" remedies do anything? What are my best options GAF?

Oh yeah. We have carpets. We have been spraying and vacuuming for days to little to no effect. As I said, the bug bomb also did nothing.

I thought it would be obvious... but the chair was chucked as soon as we found out.

Please help.

I had fleas, and I had what I thought was a losing battle for a month and a half... But I finally won. You need to invest in insecticides that contain a product called Precor, it makes the flear sterile and unable to reproduce. Calling an exterminator will do it to. You might have to get rid of some of your furniture, be warned.

Definetely fleas. They are too small to be bed bugs.

They look exactly like this:

And are this size or smaller:

Also we both fully inspected our beds and found nothing there. Also we both have new mattresses with bed liners (specifically meant to enclose the bed from bed bugs).
they're probably still bed bugs. that's kinda what they look like. contrary to what you may have heard, they can be near microscopic and leave zero trace of their existence other than their wanton feasting on your blood.

solution? invent a time machine and go back to 1971 and plead with the government not to ban ddt, for the future is dark and full of invincible terrors.

diatomaceous earth should do the trick.

We had a flea infestation in the summer when we had a heat wave. Was hideous but we just vacuumed and put powder down every day and kept giving the cats treatments and these little pills that make all the resident fleas drop off in about 20 minutes.

I'd also sit down with a pair of tweezers and play genocide.

This.

Also do a search online to confirm the bug bites you have are indeed fleas. It's difficult to differentiate between flea bites and other ones since they are just so small.

Get a specimen to confirm. Or just bomb the living crap out of your house and pray to Jesus/Allah/Buddah/Cthulu... the last one probably won't be so sympathetic.

Edit: Saw you found a specimen. Microscope or magnifying glass sir.

if they're leaping around, they're definitely fleas.

edit: if he says they look like the photo he posted, those are definitely fleas. I just had my apartment infested with them. I see no reason to tell the OP he's wrong when he's the one that's seen them and is dealing with the problem.

I had them this past summer. Vacuum EVERYDAY. Also be sure to to throw away the contents of your vacuum bad in the dumpster, don't just empty it in your house or they will get out.

I set three of these off

Also bought it in spray form to spray periodically.

Yep. They jump like crazy.

I don't know how you can even deal with that, OP. I stayed with my parents until I got rid of the fleas. I couldn't sleep at all with them biting my ankles all the time. For some reason, the ankles is their favorite body part to bite.

IDK. I don't really itch. Mosquitos (ok maybe a little), poisen ivy, etc none of them bother me. The only time I have ever itched is athletes foot.

Vaccum everything. Throw away the bag (or dump the cannister) right after you're done.
Do it at least twice a day until they're gone.
Get salt. I hear it pierces their exoskeleton. After you're done vaccuming sprinkle salt everywhere.

Rinse and repeat.

You said exoskeleton; I thought: Cyborg Flea!

The veins are prominent because the skin is tight near the ankle and fleas bite then drink. They are itty bitty vampires. I grew up with with too many cats so I know the suffering of the ankle bites. If you wear white long crew cut socks then you can see them in the morning when they first hop on to burrow through the fibers and eat breakfast; aka: your ankle. If you walk to the bathroom you can pinch the fleas off of your ankle and drop them into the toilet and flush them away. Be on alert for the next few weeks and keep vacuuming and removing the bag orat least plug up the exit hole of the hose with a tightly fitted rolled up paper towel; vacuum bags aren't too cheap; like 10 bucks per 8-10 bags if I recall; dollar a bag approximately. If you can afford it toe each bag and vaccum crevices of furniture and the floor and the corners.

VACUUM EVERYWHERE!

Please help.

Just had fleas. I have three flea factories, which I dosed with flea meds.

To handle the bastards on the run, I used a mixture of 1 teaspoon peppermint oil, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup rubbing alochol in a spray bottle. Vacuum, then mist the carpets.

Your house may smell minty fresh, but it's worth it.

Okay for some real advice, I think the confusion over whether it was bedbugs or fleas is the fact that they came from a chair. This sounds like classic bed bugs. Also, do the bites instantly hurt or do you start itching red marks? If you can actually feel the bite, you have bedbugs.

Bedbugs are a professional act and you need to call fumigation. No flea treatments will work.

I had bedbugs in college. Our dorm of about 200 people all had them. Red bites on everyone's legs and worn faces on all the guys and girls that couldn't sleep. They forced us out for a weekend to spray. One of the most uncomfortable experiences of my life.

as was said before, salt the earth. literally. salt, again and again until they are gone. since you have no pets it shouldn't take to many treatments.

My dog had them before...they were annoying as he brought them in the house with him...you could see the little fuckers jumping around when laying in bed

I had/have fleas in my house. I bombed the whole house and that killed most of the fleas. I noticed two on my bed yesterday though :/

I had this problem over the summer, unfortunately it was a real problem to handle and stressed me the crap out (I was just about to enjoy summer vacation too!).

Stressed me out because I was washing EVERYTHING down to my pets once daily and fearing of everything small and black.
What helped for me was medicating my pets with advantage II for my cat and Comfortis pill prescribed from the vet for my dog.

Since you have no pets, I recommend cleaning everything, your clothes, the floor, etc.
Also I hear getting Diatomaceous Earth and sprinkling it around everywhere kills off the adult fleas.
Getting an exterminator might help but we haven't went that far.

Best of luck to you, don't give up!

Dude, they're fleas, there is no confusion. And fleas most definitely can come from a chair.

Get some of this shit. Worked great for me. Spray your mattress, carpets, everything with it. Wash all of your clothes. Vacuum like a crazed motherfucker, and always make sure you take out the trash you dump the vacuumed bits in.

Also what I wish someone had told me right away about fleas: it's going to take awhile. They hang around for a really long time. My cat somehow managed to get into a crawl space about a month since I'd seen a flea, and all of a sudden he had eggs falling out of his fur again. It takes a few months for them to be gone completely; it's just a matter of keeping up with the extermination everyday and trying not to get too pissed and depressed about it.

Don't want to hijack the thread or something, but I have the same problem. However, I'm not sure if they're fleas or bed bugs. I took a picture of one (that seemed to be dead already) on my mattress in my dorm room.

It's not that clear in the first picture, but in the second picture you can clearly see that it's rather long in shape and very small although it can be seen rather easily.

This is driving me absolutely mad.
